Previous thread >>3992971

This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+ Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

whats the cheapest way i can get a semi-decent setup going? i have a wii with VC titles, and im checking my local craiglist and offerup and see a ton of old crts between $5-30 . could i just say pick up any old sony crt and chances are it'll be decent?

yeah, i forgot to mention i do have a oem wii s video cable.

i take it component on the older tvs is harder to find?

Component in is much more common on HD sets, and HD is a big no-no for retro.

Although some SD-only tvs with component in do exist.

got this 20L2MD yesterday and it has a BKM-129x installed.

seems to be in fantastic condition and has no issues i could find like geometry ect. (though it does have a menu bug the L2 series is known for but that is easy to work around)

Holy fuck lads, I just picked up an XM29 Plus for $100 in my tiny podunk Georgia town. First pro monitor I've even seen here.

The whole deal was bizarre, got it from an African guy (like, from the continent of Africa not just black) who drove up in a brand new chromed out Escalade. Said he just retired to the country and used to work in movie production.

So this thing can do 480/720p, right? If I hook up a PS2 with RGsB will it mess up my PS1 games?

Not like I actually have a use for it, but eh.

Might have to put it into use earlier than expected since my HMD-A240 seems to have kicked the bucket; It's always had issues with its standby/power on circuit, but now it isn't responding at all.

Not that this GDM-20E21 is that great off either; It powers on every time, but it seems to take 3 or 4 cycles before the tube actually properly energizes and starts working.

Dunno why it seems so difficult to find decent PC CRTs around here.

It should do 240p/480i as well as anything from 480p up to just a hair shy of 1080p, if you really wanna push it to the limit.

>RGsB
Remember, the PS2 only outputs RGsB in 480p or higher modes; Any other time it's in RGBS or YPbPr.

some menu setting combinations cause the menu to not show up at all, if you switch to a different input the menu did open when you originally pressed it but didn't display on the original input.

the menu also sometimes gets wavy or flicker depending on the settings as well.

just fyi, round tube does not necessarily imply it's older.
>>
>>4043913
I know, but in general there's a distinct line in the early 2000's where tubes mostly became flat for monitors. Past a certain point the only round tubes were dirt cheap OEM monitors like the small Dell ones that litter goodwills and thrift shops. I have a 13" TV that has a round tube and it's from 2005, but it's a cheap little thing and it's also a tele.

I am kind of confused with TTL/75 Ohm csync.
If monitor I own says "ext. sync: 4.0vp-p", this means it requires TTL csync, and won't work properly with 75 Ohm csync?
>>
>>4044007
start by telling us which monitor you own
>>
>>4044017
It's more of "I want to understand how things work" question to be honest.
But I can break it down
I want to organize my setup with the help of Extron MVX switch, and I have to make custom cables for it. And Extron requires csync, so it's time to change "composite video sync" cables to "csync".
Extron manual specifies following sync requirements:
>Input level 0.5 V to 5.0 Vp-p
>Output level AGC to TTL: 4.0 V to 5.0 Vp-p, unterminated
And both monitors I own (PVM 14L4 and Panasonic BT-D2020PYG) require "4.0Vp-p" sync.

The question is: do I need caps and resistors on csync lines (to get 75 Ohm csync) from the consoles, or can plug TTL csync into Extron which will output video to monitors?
What about plugging TTL csync into monitors directly?
I also own two consumer sets with RGB inputs, how would they react to TTL csync?
I'd like to avoid using LM1881 in my custom cables for Extron unless I absolutely have to.

Sorry if this question is a mess.

finding a good s-video cord for SNES/N64/GC can be tricky unless you go with an official Nintendo one, monster one, or one that people have gave good favorable reviews on. A lot of them are not wired correctly and don't output true s-video and will have diagonal lines/checkerboard effect.

this is a basic adaptor for euro scart, the same seller sells JP21 (similar looking plug DO NOT MIX THEM UP as it can cause damage) as well as more expensive ones with a sync stripper built in.

euro scart or jp21 whichever you choose it don't matter but stick with the kind you start with.

these little adapters are useful for being able to plug composite or component into the pvms as it adapts a RCA plug into the BNC style plugs the pvm expects.
>>
>>4045127
as in, if you buy the euro scart adaptor only use euro scart with it.

scart/jp21 cables typically run 5v along with the signal so with jp21 and euro scart having a few pins mixed around but the same looking connector you need to be careful.

>>
>>4045209
fuck. Pass on it then?
>>
>>4045210
Yeah but if I've gone out of my way to buy a professional monitor I might as well get the better video signal. So I'd like the one with CSYNC, but your SCART cable needs power on pin 8 to activate the stripper. I assume that it's no issue if you're using a switchbox but I don't want to waste the extra money on the stripping adapter if my SCART cables aren't powering it.
TL;DR, do I have to buy a special SCART cable like on retrogamecables.co.uk or can I use basically any non chinkshit cable to activate the stripping?
>>
>>4045226
it's fine, you can straight up buy cables themselves that have clean sync already, those scart cables regularly have capacitors and other components inside the plugs.

basicly if you buy the $35 you may have interferance if you use chinkshit cables and may have to buy clean sync cables that cost more

or buy the sync stripper and in theory be able to use just about any chink shit cable for good results as long as it don't have other interferance issues.

you are overthinking it, just buy what you want to use.
>>
>>4045225
Depends on your options, really. If you don't have the means of getting a monitor or don't care about them, and you're willing and able to hoist a huge 200lbs+ object then it's gonna be the best way to get YpBpR signals as 99% of curved TVs didn't have them. The Panasonic TAU line was better than the WEGA in terms of geometry and is said to have sharper image quality but the WEGA is still a Trinitron.
If you don't need component then just wait to find a black Trini.
>>
>>4045230
Oh so basically it's the same cost for similar results? I guess I'll go with the stripper then, thanks dude.
>>
>>4045234
yup and if you have any doubts you can always buy better made scart cables in addition too the sync stripper.

clean sync usually costs a fair bit more than a good quality composite or luma sync cable.

If you're worried about $25 then image-quality wankery isn't the hobby for you desu. Just get an S-video cable for your SNES and any normal consumer CRT and be done with it.

YpBpR is almost indistinguishable from RGB unless put side by side and analyzed. But the SNES doesn't do component so you're going to need to buy a special cable like a faggot.

Just a warning to anybody who's a cheapskate like me: the combo s-vid and composite playstation cable you can get on Amazon for $5 is total crap and doesn't actually output Y/C. It's just composite video wired to the s-vid plug.

to add

best way to get sound from the PVM to external speakers?
>>
>>4047239

If you can't figure it out you're a fucking moron, but I'm willing to entertain that possibility so here goes.

You will need SCART cables for your systems, a SCART switcher to plug them all into, a SCART to 5BNC adapter. Plug the RGB and sync cables into the proper holes in the back of the PVM. If you get RCA style cables you'll need RCA to BNC adapters. You can buy a bag of like 15 for a few dollars online.

As for your second question about sound, just bypass the PVM entirely and plug the sound lines right into your speakers using a 2xRCA to 3.5mm female adapter.
>>
>>4047254
Okay

I couldve made the question better but if I use RCA to BNC

does it go r=r w=? y=?

some people say I need sync attached also
I just dont know exactly what to buy

Also why do I need a SCART switch? is that so I get RGB out of my systems cause the RCA/Composite cant?
>>
>>4047278
You need the switch because you have more than one system you want to hook up to your SCART/BNC adapter and PVM but it only has one set of plugs.

RGB go to their respective plugs as labeled on the back of the monitor. Now I'm not sure if they are all sync on composite or sync on luma or what have you, but there should be one more cable that is the sync signal and you plug that into the sync.

So to recap you have 6 RCA/BNC plugs coming out of your SCART adapter: R, G, and B, a sync signal, and two sound lines which you are gonna plug into a 3.5mm female adapter for your speakers.
>>
>>4045932

Are you plugging audio directly into the set? You might consider taking the audio plugs that are delivering the sound, removing them from the monitor, and hooking them via extension cables to a speaker set. Either get some PC speakers and a stereo rca female to stereo 3.5mm male adapter, or go for the big guns with a real speaker set and amplifier. Depends on your desires.

Since people in this thread seem to be ignorant of model numbers, I'll be happy to inform you that you found the best SD consumer CRT ever made. Assuming in fact it as a 310. I'm not being facetious, the high voltage regulator in that model makes it look damn close to a PVM.

It depends on your disposable income. I paid almost $200 for mine and don't regret it at all.

I mentioned in another post in an earlier thread that I recently tested out using S-Video after getting used to Component. It's enough of an improvement that I find it hard to go back to S-Video.

Also, you can buy the cheaper D-terminal version and use a D-terminal to Component adapter to potentially save a bit of money.

Anyone know if it's possible to set custom resolutions for RetroArch in Linux? What I want to do is the trick from https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/675u6g/guide_how_to_run_retroarch_in_240p_on_your_vga/ in which you trick your 31 kHz monitor into 240p by running it at 120 Hz. Anyway, in Windows you'd do that in a tool called Custom Resolution Utility, and by playing with the RetroArch configuration file, but is there an analogous tool for Linux distros?
>>
>>4044007
The 4.0Vp-p means the peak-topeak value of the input can vary that much. Most sync is -300mV, having an absolute value of 300mV there, which is well inside the 4Vp-p limit. The limit is not talking about the DC component on any signal, let alone having anything at all to do with TTL specifically. 75ohm C-sync is just regular composite sync.

TTL sync is probably not good for most monitors unless they ask for it, and very few use it anyway so i wouldn't bother with it unless you discoiver you need it. The extron might take TTL, but i would have thought it would output regular 75ohm c-sync.

What are the best CRT or PVMs available in a size 10" or less? I know there's several 8 inch PVMs but I wanted to hear from anyone who might have suggestions. Off topic circumstances mean I'm going to moving across the states a couple times in the next few years so I need something small enough I can take on a plane with me, and I want to pick one up now because every other add I see is starting to pick up on the hobby and I'm seeing a bunch of local listings for shit b/w monitors that are "PERFECT 4 RETRO GAMING." I'm worried that by the time I have a place permanent enough to pick up a big set / curb dump that they'll be dried up, so I figure I better get something nice while I can.

Pic related is what USPS did to my last PVM despite being bubble wrapped, surrounded in a blanket wall and triple boxed, which is why I'm not considering the more standard sizes.

BVM-D9H5U or PVM/BVM-8045(QD)

Both are 450TVL tubes, but the former is Multiformat if you would perhaps want 480p/1080i/720p support on such a small monitor.

D9H1U is the same as the H5, but doesn't have controls built in requiring a BKM remote which sort of ruins the small size of it.

how do i improve contrast and sharpness i swear it looks better then this irl, u can kind of see how sharp and how the colour is more vivid on the right side of the picture but im trying to get a uniform crispness and trueness to the colors that i just cant seem to get, taking a picture straight on just makes the pic look terrible. ive tried having the lights off but i dont know how to change aperture or stuff on my only camera which is a iphone 7 plus

Mine is a phone camera pic too (HTC One M8).

Try knocking down the exposure compensation. The camera will see all that black and try to make it grey. Start at -1 and see how you get on.

Do CRT PC monitors typically support resolutions like 224p?
>>
>>4052701
of course. I have a couple PVMs, but I'm all about consumer sets, so I tend to encourage picking them up when they're free or cheap.
>>
>>4053519
vga monitors don't support "a resolution". they have a range of scan frequencies they will sync to.
if you're talking typical 244p at 50/60hz, that won't work.
>>
>>4053547
What about 512x448? I'm mainly looking to emulate in as close to native res as possible.

Something that low at 50/60hz, yea not happening. But you can get away with running it at 100/120hz at low resolutions just fine.
>>
>>4053589
Sounds like it would work for what I'm wanting to use it for, then. What are some good models to look out for? My ideal CRT monitor would be able to display up to 1440x1080 for running 3D games in HD resolutions as well as being able to play 2D games in native res, but that isn't necessary.

Given the choice between a 250TVL field monitor from a photographer or a 450TVL unit from a production studio, what would be the better choice? The 450 is half the price, but I'm assuming that it's probably been used a lot more than the field monitor has based on the production environment.

You probably should do 512x480 (or 512x240 @ 120Hz) and use the monitor controls to hide overscan.

you typically don't want field monitors, they are too small unless you do a very specific setup that is hard to pull off. try for something say 13 inch or larger.

for reference pic related: top is a 8042Q (8 inch) and the bottom is a 1354Q (13 inch)

Those monitors have a full shell around the tube and chassis. All the plastic stuff you usually see is entirely superficial. Also the implosion band is still present as it's pretty much an integral part of the tube.

tl;dr: unless you're an irretrievable cretin there's little to no risk of injury running a monitor like that.

Hi, /crt/. I've got a quick question. I found pic related on the curb up the street from my house. It definitely works - I tested both my Super Famicom and Sega CD using composite on it.

What's weird though is when I try to use my Saturn with it, the video doesn't come through right. The video cable I'm using has a composite out and an s-video out, but neither of them seem to work. The Saturn definitely works when I use my SCART cable to plug it into my LCD monitor, and I'm plugging the composite cables into the same ones I used for my Sega CD/SuFami. The S-Video port gives similar results.

Is this just a bad cable?

you need a desk with a high enough shelf (perhaps you could get away with using a folding laptop stand on top of a desk?) so you can put the monitor at eye level without straining your neck looking up or down. you also need to see fairly close (thus the desk idea) so you can actually tell what is going on in the game.

(sorta like pic related but lay the top part flat perhaps?)

Im having a huge problem

Why the fuck is RGB through my PC looking worse than Composite on SNES

I have CRT_EMUdriver installed to my R7 270
I go into VMMaker and enable EDID hacks and the VGA to BNC works and my desktop shows up on either my 1343MD or 20M2MDU monitors and I load up MAME and test a game and it just looks muddy and squished. It looks like the proper aspect ratio but Im seriously getting a terrible image compared to composite on SNES

What the fuck do I do?

I load up Arcade OSD also and it says "no compatible driver" since its looking at my 1070 instead of 270 (in 2nd PCIE slot)

When I load MAME switch res throws an error and says "cannot find resolution" but it still manages to load up a game fine.

FUCK THIS
>>
>>4054410
In Arcade OSD if you have another non CRT_Emudriver card you need to press 2 to move the OSD to your crt and then hit enter on attach OSD to current screen then it should recognize the compatible driver for that screen and let you do what you'd like. Also if your Mame can't find the resolution maybe check you have your monitor set correctly in Mame.ini for starters idk

Strange that they gave a chassis number rather than a model number, but that chassis is used by the 27'' and 32'' FS13/FS17 and FV17 which are decent sets.

12/16 would have been the line before 13/17, so a bit older.

FV Models are slightly higher spec'd than FS models, so despite being older, any of the FV16 models should still have YPbPr available.

Has anyone tried or thought about using an SDI output card to output emulator image to a CRT?

Provided the image is formed correctly according to standard resolution and scanlines it should be a closer rendition than playing on a PC monitor.

AFAIK SDI is just 4:2:2 Component video multiplexed onto a single line and transmitted digitally.

>I want to make my own BNC cables
You mean direct console-BNC cables or SCART/JP21-BNC breakout cables?
Unless you want to cut traces and modify your consoles from the inside, you would need something to fit required capacitors and/or resistors for RGBs lines (depends on the console), and you would need something to put these components into, like a breakout project box/scart/VGA shell. You can fit them into DIN connector shell, but that's not an easy task. And fitting these components into Nintendo/Sony AV plugs is probably impossible.
Direct console-BNC cables might be viable for systems modded with RGB amps (PC Engine, Super Famicom and Megadrive with RGB bypass amps, N64). With these mods you already have all components inside the console.

All my old cables are made from old cut shielded SCART/SVGA cables. Now I want to make custom cables with VGA plugs (for Extron VGA/RGB switch), and here is some info I gathered.
For video cables you want four core 75 Ohm multicore mini coaxial cables. Something like Mogami V4-1.5C or Van Damme 268-304-020. 8-9mm of overall cable diameter is probably thickest you can go.
5V line is not important if you are not using
For audio cables look into headphone DIY cable guides, there's lots of into about connectors and cables online. Mogami offers good cables for that.

As for BNC plugs. Neutrik should work with their miniature BNC plugs NBTC75BLI4. But there are cheaper options - any RG179 BNC plugs should work, but you would also need a special crimp tool for these plugs.

How I see my setup: console - cable with VGA plug, has all components inside - Extron switch input - VGA to BNC cable on output for PVM

Check to see if there's a service adjustment for it, most CRTs with a digital chassis and a service menu will have rotation compensation, I think nearly all Sony's do.

Asides from that, if you do need to adjust the yoke, make sure you know how to set up your Purity and adjust all your magnetics by hand.

>>4061334
Yeah, i'm aware. I'd probably put a small project box somewhere in line on the cable to contain any components needed. And I already have a few hundred feet of 5 core mini coax and some BNC connectors, so i've got that covered.

If only. It is a Sony, but from 1974, so many years before digital adjustments.

Unfortunately I've never serviced a TV before and I have no idea how to adjust purity/magnetics. The TV already has a minor purity issue, but it's far less bothersome than the rotation issue.

Probably not worth the risk to fool with it as an amateur.

Wide screen could also work, but you'll end up with a smaller picture; Might want to sacrifice a few frames for a widescreen HD CRT or what have you.

what did you mean by this? Let's say I get a Sony widescreen CRT that can do 480p. Do I lose frames when playing games on it?

If i wanted to play SNES on a HD CRT, should I use an OSSC to get 480p or do they still handle 240p fine?

Does anyone have info on the Samsung CS-29Z40M5 consumer CRT?
I bought it on this little shop owned by a Filipino immigrant near a restaurant where I went.
I bought it because it was ridiculously cheap, was in great condition and it has component inputs.
I just wanted a sleek-looking CRT for my bedroom (my game room already has a Sony D32E1WU BVM and the living room has an LG G6 OLED 4K TV), and this one seemed ridiculously cheap and was in a great condition so I bought it.
It also looked pretty as it was as sleek as a CRT can be.

The shopkeeper said that he bought the TV in 2007 when he was in the Philippines, and he bought a Samsung HDTV in 2012 when he had enough money when he moved to America, so he put the CRT on sale in his shop, and no one bought it until now, so it was ridiculously cheap because no one bought it after five years.

I tried searching for more info on Google but the only results that show up are manuals and some Filipino forum which I can't understand, nor do they have any info on the TV.

What I do know is that it's a slim-fit TV which is also a flat panel, it has one S-Video and one Composite input on the side, as well as two Composite inputs, one Component input, one RF input and one Composite output.
Composite (AV2), for some reason, is duplicated and there is one AV2 port on the side (with the S-Video port), and one on the back.
The AV2 audio is shared for both S-Video, Composite 2 and Component outputs.
Pic related is the back of the TV.

But can someone please give me more info on this TV, it seems like it's a very obscure one.

The console plugged into the RF input was my second original Famicom (I own two) which hasn't been modded with Composite outputs yet at the time I took the picture.
I modded it with Composite outputs a while later.

>>
>>4062112
Awful deal. Fuck the fact that it's new, you can get infinitely better CRTs for virtually nothing.
>>
>>4062112
>>4062251
Actually the VCR combo units make nice arcade monitors. Often they don't have an active beam-current limit, because the VCR controls all input to the chassis. Can be tricky to mod, and if you're not after an arcade setup might not be worth it.
>>
>>4062214
What are we going to tell you that the manual can't?

>Samsung=shit
>HD CRT=shit
>Low profile flat tube=SHIT

Enjoy your boat anchor I guess. Shame it didn't serve that purpose on its voyage from the Philippines.
>>
>>4061061
Yeah, the vectrex isn't reallya monitor, bit still some original little CRT tho.
I've got a Scart adapter for my CTM644, but all of my stuff is still boxed. I just have a N64 laying around, but the CTM apparently won't accept Composite, only RGB
>>
>>4062278
I tried to look at the online manual in the Philippines website but it has very few useful information and even conflicting information.
Part of it is because that it's shared with some other Samsung TVs.
For example: It says that the Component input supports 480p, 720p and 1080i in one part of the manual, but in another, it says that it only supports 480i, regardless of model.
Another says that it has an HDMI input, but my particular TV has no HDMI input.
I checked the Philippines website because it's in English and maybe this particular model used to be common in the Philippines, and it may be kinda rare in America.

Thankfully, this gives me some vague info but it still has some inconsistencies (it says that the TV has a headphone jack, while mine doesn't):
https://www.cnet.com/products/samsung-cs29z40-slimfit-21-crt-tv/specs/

Also, this doesn't look like an HD CRT so I may be lucky, even if it's a flat tube and even if it's by Samsung.
>>
>>4062147
HDCRTs scale and process the image similar to what LCDs do. As such, there is a few frames of lag on them versus a PC monitor or an SD CRT.

Sony's HDCRTs have ~2 frames of delay with 480p and ~3 frames with 240p/480i.
240p will work, but it won't look that great. Additionally, for the Dreamcast, you will need a transcoder or something to turn the VGA signal into YPbPr.

The PC CRT route is lagless, but won't accept 240p, or any Component signals, so you'd need to do the reverse and get a transcoder to go from YPbPr to VGA instead.
>>
>>4062298
Yeah that's right, it's absolutely RGB only.

I got mine bundled with a working CPC 464 for £20. It was fine right off the bat but a little effort tweaking it yielded very pleasing results considering its humble Orion tube and "what, that's it?" chassis.

I picked up a Gateway VX900 awhile ago for about 10 bucks. It's a run of the mill early 2000s VGA CRT. Got it mainly for my Dreamcast but I have configured it for 240p emulatan. It's nice enough.
>>
>>4063550

>>4063113 here, I tested out that 1341, didn't notice anything obviously wrong with it, but went with one of the others with a higher pitch count. They've been used in a church, so there's an advantage in that they haven't been on for nearly as long as something in a broadcast studio (maybe a couple hours a weekend vs. much higher on-time). It couldn't hurt to offer $50 or so for it, especially if you don't want it THAT bad. It's been listed for quite a while now, so obviously no one is biting on it at the original price. I don't know if you contacted the seller yet, but he said he wasn't set on getting that price for any of them, just that he was told to ask for that much. As for >>4063137 complaining about the lack of OSD, I'm pretty sure that's just the result of it being an older model. The only thing intrinsically bad about analog adjustments is that they drift somewhat more with age. If you must have something with OSD adjustment, it'll need about late 90s or later

The audio outputs on my many consoles are plugged into a 6.1 surround setup.
I also plugged in a DVD player, a VCR and a LaserDisc player into my surround setup.
The PS2 and Xbox are the only consoles in my CRT setup which output digital audio.

Many games are only in 4.0 but they still sound great, as well as some games in 5.1, too bad the only 6.1 games I can think of are Final Fantasy: The PS2 Trilogy (X, X-2 and XII) which is not retro.

But I do have some 6.1 LaserDiscs (like Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace), as well as some DVDs with 6.1 like Star Wars: The Complete Saga, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Studio Ghibli Collection, and even some which were downgraded to 5.1 in the Blu-ray versions like Gladiator and Enchanted (which is weird, since the Disney DVD and Disney Blu-ray versions of Enchanted came out simultaneously, at least in the US, and the Disney DVD of Enchanted also came with an exclusive making-of documentary bonus disc if you bought it in Target or if you bought the Japanese 2-Disc Special Edition, the documentary wasn't in the Disney Blu-ray, but the Disney Blu-ray had an exclusive trivia track which wasn't in any Disney DVD version), however, you can restore 6.1 in their Blu-rays by using DTS Neo:6 or Dolby Pro Logic IIx.
The movies I most enjoyed in 6.1 are Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Tales from Earthsea, Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea, and Enchanted.
Of course, Star Wars and LotR would be obvious pickings.

There are even some TV series in 6.1 like CSI and Samurai Jack, Samurai Jack sounds really great in 6.1, especially in Season 5.
Too bad there is a lack of 6.1 music, the only ones I can think of are the Studio Ghibli soundtracks and Taylor Swift's music, though I really enjoyed watching and listening to Taylor Swift: Speak Now - World Tour Live in 6.1 surround sound, and also Joe Hisaishi in Budokan, especially when they performed the My Neighbor Totoro medley near the end.
>>
>>4067959
Also, my 6.1 surround sound setup is THX certified, just to add icing on top of a really huge and tasty cake.

Is there big differences between different dvd players? Or are they all the same? I'm trying to save the laser of my ps2. Also the slim ps2 makes shit ton of noise when running a movie. So I guess a bigger machine would make less noise?

Pic related is the highest quality DVD player I own. The build is quite literally bombproof and it has a ludicrously overspecced transport. It was designed to be mounted in kiosks and displays for 24/7 operation.

If it plays DVD then it works. The only difference between them is audio output capability.

Not really anon. Upscaling capability is one fundamental difference, as is the ability to function past the warranty period which is something sadly lacking in chinkshit brands.

Do people really fall for disneys pathetic insistence on calling their releases "Disney whatever"? They're just DVD's and blu-ray's dude, no different than any other physical medium released for any other format made for it.

I guess so, there's also region locking and recording capability. Oh, and whether it can play VCD if you like that crap.

Really though, if you aren't looking at bottom line vs anything decent then it's not really a huge difference from what I've seen. But I only watch movies on my computer so what do I know.

Pair of Sony Bookshelf speakers with my attic setup.

Would probably be better to switch them around, but I don't even know where I'd put the KG4s in the attic; Too many CRTs.
>>
>>4068137
Any tips how to spot a quality one? Does the brand really matter? I guess I should also be looking at the outputs, since most of them only have scart here.
>>
>>4068436
Stick with recognisable name brands (Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Toshiba etc). Steer clear of chinese stuff (except Oppo, they are among the best available). If you're in SCART-land and it has component output that generally means it has HD upscaling which is useless for most CRTs but pretty much essential if you wish to hook it up to a flat panel.

Honestly though, just aim for a Pioneer DVD-V8000. You're not going to find anything better and they can be picked up for decent prices these days. I paid £20 for mine on eBay.

That said the entire Star Wars franchise is utter crap so it hardly matters in the long run.

My friend and I killed ourselves lugging it into my car and into my basement though so be mindful of that, it is as heavy as everyone says. If you can get an older Trinitron then by all means go for that but if this is the best around, for $20 its really a pretty good deal.

In this case, it's a Key Digital KD-VTCA3. Considerably harder to find at a decent price than it's sister that goes in the opposite direction. Explicit support for RGBS and specifically SCART, which is nice, but actually feeding SCART to it will require some extra cabling since it uses a VGA connector.

FW900 is generally regarded as the best. If you don't like trinitron tubes then whatever you can get with the highest horizontal refresh rate. A 110Khz is easy to find and can easily do 1920x1440 which is still a good resolution and looks fantastic imo.

I got a comfy KV-13TR24 in which has been working fantastic overall. Went to the store and got a Model 1 Genesis, but as I played Sonic 3, there was some distortion in both composite and via Headjack to RCA. Using headphones, it works well, however I was wondering what people would use for external speakers? I don't mind using headphones, but if someone else wants to listen, it's a problem.

Iif you want to use a CRT with the DC (not really sure what you're asking), you should get a VGA adapter and a CRT PC monitor, it will look great. Conversely, you could also just use an HDTV with a VGA port, the DC is kind of the threshold where gaming became acceptable on non-CRTs.

Here's a picture of my Trinitron KV-27FV17 with s-video in from my Super Famicom. The scanlines are very crisp; N64 sprites looks significantly better. Any recommendations on what I could do to further improve picture quality (by this, I mean how I could mess with the settings or hardware)?

I also have a KV-20FS100 that sadly doesn't have s-video (only component and composite). The picture looks nicer on this one, probably due in part to me opening up the back and messing around with some of the knobs on the inside. I'm trying to find a matching one for use on Melee streams, but haven't had any luck yet.

Also, anyone know where I could find a PVM for relatively cheap? My budget is like $75 at the moment.

Is there any point in getting an av receiver if I already have all my shit hooked up to an extron? I guess eventually I'll be getting a proper sound setup, but in the meantime will it do anything besides making my setup even more confusing to power on
>>
>>4072202
Just get an amp and speaker and run your audio output from the Extron to it. You don't need some fancy receiver, just a power amp and speakers.
>>
>>4042021
What the best way to display a composite signal on a BVM 20F1E with only analog RGB and SDI input cards? I'd like to hookup my laserdisc player on it but I'd rather not pay hundred of bucks for a BVM composite input card.
>>
>>4043493
Any firmware update available? Either by flashing the BIOS/swapping the ROM chips or by upgrading it through the remote/RS232 port?
>>
>>4072262
15 seconds with google:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/558906-REG/Blackmagic_Design_CONVMAAS_Mini_Converter_Analog_to.html

Although it'll still be about as expensive (Or more if the prices I'm seeing are average) as getting a dedicated card for your monitor, and not nearly as tidy either.
I'm not seeing any composite to RGB devices that has sync separate from green.
>>
>>4072224
On a side note, I can get this receiver for like 1/16 of the price that it originally sold for, in talking under 50 bucks. Not like I'm going out and buying the biggest baddest receiver I can find. It's just cheap but a really good build and brand and can potentially fit with my setup.

I'm just not sure if there are any obvious benefits of doing it
>>
>>4072301
In that case why not? You don't have to use the video switching functions; if it's a good amp, just use it as an amp and keep your Extron rig as is, hombre.
>>
>>4072267
not that i know of, from what i have seen it has to do with the horizonal center when in RGB mode.

by default it's too far to the left and once you center it the menu disappears though you can just jump to another input and the menu will appear on those.
>>
>>4072298
Thanks for your answer. Actually I've seen this device before but I though they would be a better alternative. SO I think I'm back into lookig for input cards for my BVM then.

Thinking about that, what would be the diffucilty level to design an homebrew card for a BVM? It seems that the internal interface pi nout hasn't been reverse enginered yet but beyond that it would be only a matter of ADC and DAC on a board with some filtering circuits, no?
