Keep in mind that their unequipped ATK and DEF is Lv*2 and Lv*1, respectively. Also, the Master is the only promotion that's actually a downgrade in the original, because it only gains 1 MDEF per level instead of the Black Belt's +4 per level.

I usually play with Fighter Fighter Wmage Bmage, but I was thinking of doing Fighter BBelt Rmage Bmage, because Wmage feels really useless. Heals don't heal for shit, can't rez in battle, etc.

I found that once you get HEAL staff/bracer, having two characters attack and two characters spam the HEAL items is a suitable replacement for a white mage.

>>
I went with fighter, monk, red mage, white mage and would probably do it again.
I don't like expendable items so I always get a reserve healer in case the primary healer is incapacitated. Red mage also covers black magic while still having some fighting skills.
Monk and fighter seems more balanced than two fighters or two monks in terms of equipment you find and buy.
>>
>>3742741
favorite: fighter, redmage, blackbelt, whitemage
overpowered: fighter, fighter, blackbelt, redmage

I can provide detailed arguments for these, too.

>>3742747
I've played with that party before, it's not quite as good as above but it's up there.
>>
>>3743368
thief is almost dead weight for a big portion of the game. when your characters mature, he becomes the awesome ninja, but I don't really think it's worth the wait.
>>
>>3743354
switch redmage into 2nd row and you've got my favorite party.

first rank gets hit 4/8, second rank 2/8, third and fourth, 1/8. the blackbelt is your artillery/glass cannon, so you should put him on row 3 to keep him safe. that will make up for his weak defense.

as for black mage, the redmage can basically cover his job. redmage has all the fire/ice/lit spells which are the bread and butter of black magic, all he's missing are debuffs, instakills, and NUKE. since the INT stat doesn't work, there's no penalty on his magic damage output. at the same time, he offers decent offense/defense and some extra white magic. the main reason to use black mage is for the cool sprite.
>>
>>3743550
>he blackbelt is your artillery/glass cannon, so you should put him on row 3 to keep him safe. that will make up for his weak defense.
They have decent defense provided you don't equip any armor.
>>
>>3742741
I want a brand new, classic style RPG with this element. Being able to choose your classes from the very beginning and sticking with it. Also the GBA version is pretty sweet.
>>
>>3743556
I always had the impression that they lacked defense. was I wrong all this time? I thought putting redmage on row2 was better than blackbelt.
>>
>>3743561
You can alternate them depending on who has more defense/hp at the moment.
The red mage can be better protected when he gets new equipment while the monk gains defense from new levels.
>>
>>3743564
I'll take this into consideration.
>>
What do you do with red mage late in the game? Melee, and healing between battles?

>>
>>3743245
I always wondered, when the heroes got their class upgrade, what were those sprites based off of? In FF1 when they class change they get all tall and skip leg day, those sprites keep the classic cute sprite style but give them swank as fuck outfits.
>>
>>3744061
Final Fantasy III (Nes) recolored sprites with some modifications, like Thief's head pasted on one, anon.
>>
>>3744058
I agree, the early sprites are classics, the later ones don't look right.
>>

I figured as much. I should play FF 2 and 3 one of these days, and actually see the original to the very end, it's fascinating when you realize how much D&D influence there was at the beginning

No. The white mage is a man. The girly looking WM sprite from 8-Bit Theatre is from FF3 and even that is a dude in the game.
>>
>>3745146
>>3747116
I always thought it was honestly up to you, as nothing in the game indicates what gender a bunch of sprites are.
>>
>>3747116
no, the white mage is definitely female. the ff3 remake associates Refia with the white mage job, there's the sprites which range from androgynous to feminine, and final fantasy wiki says that most white mages are girls.

of course, dudes CAN be white mages, just like there are male nurses irl. but it's mostly a female profession.

that was most likely the idea.
in the remakes though, wm has all female preset names.
red mage has a mix of both genders
>>
>>3750776
in addition to this, white magic is mostly a non-aggressive healing art, which fits the female persuasion.

like I said, I don't think it's a hard and fast rule, but white mages are generally female.
>>
When I was a kid, I felt that the White Mage was female, but after promoting, it looked more like a guy. Because of that, I just assumed that all the classes in FF1 were meant to be male.

>>
>>3750919
>4 White mages
It'll never work.
>>
>>3750921
That first sprite looks like 8-bit Jesus that hasn't grown a beard yet. Even the first 16-bit sprite looks more like one of Japan's pretty boy designs than an actual woman. He eventually gets a full sex change (the degenerate) by that final sprite, but by that time the game is total rubbish, so who cares.
>>
>>3751000

as I said in the last thread on this: it works fine if you abuse items; once you have the Zeus gauntlet the game becomes easy and it only gets easier after that

four black mages might actually be harder
>>
>>3751031
4 Thieves would even be harder.

>>

>>3750885

>>
>>3751075
Thief is so fucking bad in FF1.

People will have you believe that Ninja redeems it but they're outclassed so grossly by Knights that its disgusting, then Red Mages have more utility throughout the entire game.

Thief is by far and wide the worst class.
>>
>>3751120
I wouldn't say Ninjas are grossly outclassed, especially with their ability to equip almost anything. Ninjas are very strong, however, Knights do edge them out.

the only way that enduring the sacrifice of using the Thief would be justified is if Ninjas were overpowered, which they sadly aren't.
>>
>>3751120
Why did they even add thieves when you don't need them to disarm traps like in other games?
>>
>>3751138
Thieves have high Luck, which was supposed to improve your chances of running from battle (which is handy in certain encounters which could easily result in a party wipe). Outside of that, though, they don't have much going for them. They have high starting AGL, but it kinda levels off after a while, and their final AGL isn't much better than a Fighter / Knight.

Even if Luck wasn't bugged, there wouldn't be much of a reason to use one.
>>
>>3751131
Ninjas are absolutely outclassed. The only thing they can use over Knights is the katana, and by that point you have Excalibur, Sun Sword (I think thats the 3rd best) and every character can use the Masamune.

They can wear more armor as NInja's than thieves but it's still not as much as Knights.

My ninja always dealt less damage than my Knight, and even hit less times than my knight did.

Thieves suck,
>>
>>3751153
How do ninjas compare to supermonks?
>>
>>3751153
>Thieves suck,
that is true.

>>3751154
the master is the best offensive weapon in the game. a blackbelt is a much better investment than a thief. they may have weaker defense, but putting them on the 3rd row negates that.

lmao wtf, white mage is a necessity for a decent build. only white mage can do full party heals and HARM the undead.
>>
>>3752789
Then you've got to have traps for him to disarm. Though in many cases you were better off disarming them with magic instead of dragging a useless thief along.

Anyone knows of a good hack that improves this game?

I've already played it normally and there were a lot of things that could use an improvement, make it more balanced or just encourage a different play-style. I went to Romhacking to look for one, but there are dozens of different hacks
>>
>>3753241
Just realize that stat-change spells are non-functional and it's easy.
>>
>INT is bugged to do nothing
Did people not playtest these games? A stat is a major feature and I don't even see how you can mess a damage cal up.
>>
>>3754481
> INT is bugged
No, it is not. INT never affected magic damage in pre-1988 games. That is just not how it was done. If INT was ever to be used for anything it would have been some sort of scrapped MP growth mechanic.
>>
>>3754516
Stats that do nothing is par for the course in an 80's game, really. Phantasy Star 2 has a useless Strength stat, of all things.

Honestly I think the some of the stats are just there to make players feel like they're progressing. But as has been said, Intelligence being a magic damage stat was not an 80's thing, if it was ever meant to be used it would have been for something else.
>>
>>3754865
Xanadu used INT for magic damage in 1985.
>[Attack power] = [Base value]*[M-EXP]*([INT]/100)
There were also tons of table talk games beyond D&D that you may simply not know of.

Despite owning it, I neglected to get very far in this game as a kid so I'm doing a run now with 2x fighter, 2x red mage. Farthest I've ever gotten. Just finished the Marsh Cave, which was kind of a pain in the ass, but my team is starting to feel pretty unstoppable.
>>
>>3756353
Marsh Cave can be a pretty big hurdle. If you cleared that okay you can probably do the rest without too much pain.
>>
>>3756601
my strategy for the marsh cave is to first go in and collect stuff, then go outside and use the HOUSE you find down there, then make a second trip for only the CROWN. this makes the wizard battle much more manageable.
>>
>>3756210
white mage gets more hp

black mage gets cat claws but by that point you should have several spellcasting weapons that are all preferable to regular melee attacks
>>
>>3757375
white mage also gets iron/silver hammers which can contribute when she has nothing else to do.

just got to melmond at level 11, and my team is also feeling powerful.

fighter: silver sword, full set of iron
redmage: rune sword, silver armor, cap, gloves
blackbelt: silver bracelet
whitemage: silver hammer, silver bracelet, cap, gloves
all magic slots filled up to level 4.

the silver bracelet does alot for defense, and when I get proring/procape it'll only get better.

yes, if you need to grind, that's the best spot. when you get to the earth cave, there's an optional corridor full of giants on the first floor.
