Yeah, that. I haven't seen much negativity towards Doom 64, like at all.
>>
>>3642461
>>3642463
It is worth keeping in mind that Aleph One is not at the same quality level you'd expect from, say, Doom or Quake ports. There are a lot of creature comforts you'll miss. That said, there isn't really much in the way of other ways to play the series nowadays, which is a damn shame.
>>
>>3642470

Only shitty part of Doom64 is having to use the fucking N64 controller.

Doom64 EX takes care of that and makes the game a legitimate new doom game to play for those that missed it.
>>
So people were discussing unreal's detail texture in the previous thread - I've been mucking around with shaders in zandronum/gzdoom, and I think it might be possible to hack those into doom by calling the brightmap application functions with some tweaks, no source modification needed.
>>
>>3642476
It works well enough but yeah having mouse support is great. People also seem to forget doom didn't launch with mouse support, using a keyboard for turning was arguably worse than an n64 joystick.
>>
>>3642481

>People also seem to forget doom didn't launch with mouse support

Eh? As far as I'm aware, the game always had support for mouse turning and movement. Heck, even Wolfenstein 3D had support for the mouse.
>>
>>3642479
DT works sorta like overlay layer mode in photoshop, give it a shot anon but dont expect great results as tiling may be noticeable
>>
>>3642481

>didnt launch with mouse support

actually it did, it's common misconception that didnt.
>>
>>3642487
It didn't?
>>
>>3642490

Oh yeah, sorry. missed a word.

Doom had mouse support from the get go (and as >>3642484 mentionned, so did wolf3d) but it's a common misconception that it didnt support it.
>>
>>3642481
Doom always supported mouse + keyboard layout. That was pretty much the first thing Doom's setup asked about. Even in v0.99 setup it asked player if he wanted to use mouse+kb, kb only or joystick.
>>
>>3642496
That's very fucking weird, I finished Doom 2 and never used the mouse.
>>
>>3642502

Neither did I, back then, most peaople didnt even consider that an option until true 3d games like quake made it popular.
>>
>>3642508
Well, the very first FPS I played was Unreal, so I'm not a "real" FPS fan. Playing Doom was extremely weird because of that.
>>
>>3642485
Yeah I'd have to read up on the math behind the blend modes. I think even if it was possible to apply a even single-layer noise DT that'd be pretty sweet for like trilinear filtered rock, concrete etc.

I think that brightmaps could also be inverted as.. "darkmaps?" so for example a dynamic light would appear to cast shadows in the grain.
>>
>>3642521
problem with doom and trilinear filters is that texture resolution is too low for it to be used effectively, DT would help with that but you can polish a turd only so much, sharp details on blurry image isnt really what people fancy, high resolution textures would be needed. I was thinking of doing something like that with substance designer, we might team up anon

Fucking around with shaders is something that I think is underdone anyway. Like this "volumetric" fog effect, which could be made to wave and roil constantly with ease.

I also think I could write one that applies black cel-shaded outlines to everything. That'd be fun for a laff right?
>>
>>3642525
Yeah it would be shit for the stock textures, but for custom high res ones there's real merit for investigating these things. Like in Total Chaos or whatever.
>>
>>3642476
The real shitty parts of the original Doom 64 are getting the cartridge, as well as shitty N64 emulation overall.
>>
>>3642532
you reckon 4x would be good enough? for average wall that would be 512x512 and for flats thats 256x256
>>

Even 2x would take you to an early 2000's level, and above that its starting to get stupid not having proper lighting for super hq assets. Imho. But yeah id like to cooperate with materials stuff, provided my ideas are even technically possible.

Might be a better idea to just run it through DOSBox if there's a version of DOSBox that runs on W10. You gotta set up bmouse.exe in Blood's setup.exe as an auxiliary control method or something.
>>
>>3642561
Just map02.

>>3642689
If you mean like having a fat glowing corona, no that'd require a customized actor. Making the sprite itself render on top of the fog should be easy.

Keep in mind that to do what you see in that pic, the entire game would have fog from height 0 to height 3d. It could be rewritten to use fog level and colored sector light as arguments for the fog, which in a custom map would allow you to set those values or change them with ACS. But it's not really feasible to load the thing with a level that isn't made for it.

>>3642560
It's literally just plain text files in the correct directories of a pk3. The math inside those files is the hard part, and I'm learning as I go pretty much. Funny how doom modding is what taught me trigonometry in the first place..

>>
>>3643085

I can't really remember what my "first" FPS was, but Unreal was the first FPS I really got into and played from beginning to end.
I loved everything about it, and it sticks with me even now. The beautiful levels, the fun guns, the intense firefights, the big titties and the (at the time) hot girls, it was incredible.
>>
>>3643127
>big titties
>in Unreal
What?!?
You wanted to fuck the nalis?

And frankly, I never finished Unreal properly. I played it when I was a kid, and beyond that traumatizing scene at the beginning where you hear a guy begging and crying as he's torn into pieces, it was also the kind of game where you murder everything on the map and then look for a switch that you missed.

The botmatches, however... Oh boy, I had so much fun with these. I think I played these more than I played the story mode.
It's also that game that introduced me to the English language. Since all the cheat codes were in English.

>>
>>3642890
It's fun to dick around with a gameplay mod for a while, like Project MSX, DooD, or GMOTA, but usually I'll just play a few maps with them every so often and go back to enhanced vanilla. I only played through Ultimate and Doom2 in full with non-vanilla gameplay mods once, when I hadn't played them for years and wanted a fresh new experience.

Now I mainly stick to Smooth Doom + Perkristian HQ SFX + BDCME or other music enhancement mods for an "enhanced" vanilla experience, and it feels fucking amazing to play. Just yesterday I was replaying through the first few levels of TNT with all of this, and at one point I just had that moment of being zoned into that super fast, run-n-gun, twitch-reaction gameplay, and it was like a mental orgasm. It felt fucking fantastic and just gave me a moment of "God I fucking love Doom", with SSG gibbing, bullet casings, new skins, smoother animations, and enhanced sounds/music, it feels like I'm playing some totally non-vanilla gameplay mod, but it's purely aesthetics and the gameplay stays almost exactly the same. Would recommend highly.

While I do like chaingun sniping, I do think that it makes more sense to snipe with a standard assault rifle or similar than it would a chaingun, and for a chaingun to be a high-rate-of-fire weapon that lets you rip things to shreds at close range. I would assume that the chaingun has it's standard rate of fire due to either technical limitations of the time or for balance reasons, and it works well enough for classic Doom gameplay, but I do like it when chainguns are more intense rapid fire weapons that can mow down a crowd with ease as that's sort of what they're designed for. Maybe if anything, give the standard chaingun its regular firing speed and a 2x alt fire, which I think there's a chaingun variant that does just that (and no, not BD's).
That all being said, at heart I'm still perfectly fine with the vanilla chaingun and sniping with it.
>>
>>3643454
It stutters like shit from both that and any other thrust function I can imagine. But I am however setting it's angle constantly in the same script.
>>
>>3643497
For clarification: it's a drivable tank and I almost got it working. Only the forward and backward movement is left to fix really.
>>
>>3643497
>>3643506
The problem with that is that Doom's movement, coding, and everything is locked at a very firm 35 tics per second. So for framerates moving beyond that, it's going to stutter because the framerate is faster than it's actually moving.
>>
>>3643551
So I need to Warp rather than thrust it to get interpolation?

or perhaps flag the tank as a missile or fastprojectile, hmm..

Most certainly balance reasons, because the Wolfenstein chaingun fired crazy fast. I guess the Plasma Rifle was the one that actually inherited it's full auto room cleaner role.

lost souls may be annoying but they're cute

the way they just float about at 0,3mph with no direction whatsoever and how they just charge in on you, only to stumble straight into a wall and be like 'oh'

how they often fight one another clumsily

their death animation consisting of a mere 'pop'

even the way they float around idly on doom 4, it looks like they're having a genuinely fun time. especially when you just run into a batch of them and it's almost like a disco party gathering of demon bone heads, and get sent flying away spiraled when killed

even their charge screams
>>
>>3645391

Lost Souls are the cutest. Especially when they get hit with an errant shot mid-charge, so they're stuck like that.

doom in general is cute

even when it tries to be sewious and all it's just endearing and really charming, probably has to do with the lack of complexity on the frame animations monsters have, they're all big pudgy dumb dumbs

>>

Monsters are "less accurate" when targeting you. Which is to say, when they're attacking, they will often randomly shoot to your left or to your right. This might be useful for avoiding hitscanners fire, but for projectile enemies, it only makes them more unpredictable.
>>
>>3646091
It makes enemy aiming less direct by making the monsters turn randomly when in fire states

It makes projectiles harder to react properly to because they become random, but it makes hitscanners borderline impotent because their accuracy drops massively.

Yeah, I like that something as unreliable as saving BoBs is only rewarded with minor dialog changes and not secret levels or something. Speaking of, the secrets in this game are pretty well hidden, too, at least from what I can tell. I saw a few in the first few levels but didn't know how to get to them (ie raised platform with some tech item on stage 2 or 3), and otherwise I don't think I've found too many naturally. Not having a secret counter percentage or anything doesn't help either.

Mark did this several times in recent versions of BD and never fixed it, because he's the greatest doom modder of all time and you're all very jealous of him aren't you, and you should totally support him on Patreon so he can make tutorials on how to mod properly, like taking other people's assets and not crediting them. Anyway. Graf warned Mark this would happen SIX MONTHS AHEAD OF TIME, and apparently Mark still cannot be fuckassed to fixed it.

The only ways to fix it are to:
-Revert to an old version of G/ZDoom
-Do SgtMarkIV's job for him and open up the pk3 in SLADE & 'Find-Replace' every instance of 0.l with 0.1

To be fair, it should have never been an issue, because ZDoom ought to have been coughing up an error upon finding a float that wasn't actually a float. The fact that Mark refuses to fix it, claiming that he wants to work on BD64, though, is unacceptable. The exact nature of the problem is known, has been known for some time, and is easily solvable. This isn't exactly fucking rocket science.

I'm keeping an eye on them now to see if they continue to run straight for me or deviate off a path once they activate before I shoot them. I know about "frog blast the vent core", so that's helpful.

That switch puzzle on "Colony Ship For Sale, Cheap" was kind of tedious but not too bad. I tried blasting the switches with grenades from the central room first, but then I realized that they weren't timed switches and instead on/off activated. I eyeballed the height placements pretty well and only had to re-backtrack once to lower the last lift by a little, so that saved me a lot of tedious running around. The game is fun and I'm getting a lot more bold and run-n-gun with it than just creeping around every corner in the dark, but that's enough for one night.

I think you're reading the bullet points wrong, which admittedly isn't hard to do

monsters will alert everyone within a certain radius of them to their target, projectiles will alert everyone withing a certain radius to their firer, and weapons will alert within a certain range to its wielder

that's the only way it makes sense, considering AMF_EMITFROMTARGET exists

I think this definitely pertains to be discussed in these threads, even if I'm heavily risking them because of shitposting.

Looks like Brutal Doom 64 got nominated for "Best Fan Made Content" at The Game Awards (remember those videogame awards that were broadcasted on Spike TV? These are the exact same, just without Spike TV's money).

It was competing against Another Metroid 2 Remake (AM2R) and Pokemon Uranium, and other mod I can't remember at the moment.

Well, as it turns out, both these fangames that actually had a chance at beating BD64 in votes were removed thanks to Nintendo actually not giving clearance to the TGA staff, and now it's pretty much a given that BD64 will win.

Thanks, Nintendo.

The other mod was Enderal, a Skyrim TC which is the sequel to Nehrim, a Oblivion TC. I can't speak for its quality but the latter was considered by players to be much better than the game it's modded off, so it still must be leagues better than BD64.

As for AM2R it's really a shame. Nintendo is just trying to protect their IP, but it's still a fucking dick move.

Nintendo as a whole also isn't exactly the smartest bunch when it comes to pleasing their more niche audiences. Especially NoA, what the fuck are they even doing?

Well there were gore mods before Brutal Doom but obviously the mod itself hit the 'right' buttons to achieve mainstream appeal.
>>
>>3647294
NoA is controlled by NoJ, I remember when Reggie wanted Rare's games back on the VC in exchange for letting MS put Goldeneye on XBLA, and the deal was made, but at the last second NoJ stepped in and cancelled it because ''muh honor'', don't want no filthy gaijin taking a share out our pie even if it's mutually beneficial.

That coupled with their draconic tendencies in the 80s and 90s that involve blackmailing/bribing stores to not store their competitors' games which lead to some studios' bankruptcy is proof that they're the ''it's not enough that I succeed, others must fail'' kind.

I don't think those two games would have beaten BD, especially since Doom got a boost this year thanks to D44M which made Doom so popular that gaming sites started checking and praising megawads all of a sudden, like Ancient Aliens. Even Cinemassacre played BD but not AM2R or Uranium.

I'm pretty sure the fact that they were taken down is more popular than the games themselves were before that happened.

there's 2 types of awards this year in TGA, the ones elected by the videogame industry, and the ones elected by the audience

Best Fanmade Content was for the audience, and you could vote on Twitter using hashtags. and both those games, especially Pokemon Uranium were beating BD64 by a long mile.

with both of them out of competition thanks to Nintendo, BD64 has pretty much an open road.

>Realize I'm being a salty prick at this point and backpedal a bit to at least say "you can play what you want, and that's fine, but I know plenty of mods I can recommend you to try instead"

>Know that they probably won't try any of the others out and will just stick to BD, but at least feel a bit satisfied for showing them some options
I really do consider BD to be a gateway mod, it's just annoying at times when all the new comers to Doom immediately flock to BD and treat it like the go-to way to play it and don't even consider other mod options.

Because it was one of the foundational FPS games, there hadn't really been a game like it until then. I think they felt that it was challenging enough on harder difficulties, maybe the idea that some people didn't have compatible mice came into the thought process.

Nightmare! difficulty, Thy Flesh Consumed and Final Doom were all made specifically to appease people who felt the original games weren't challenging enough.

I do think some enemies like the barons and knights would benefit from unique attacks of their own, but Doom was from some simpler times. Besides, you could cherry pick and point fingers at other games like Duke or Marathon with "x enemy is just y enemy but stronger". Games released later in the 90s have the advantage of better tech and a necessity to stand out from other games.

UV is fine desu
in doom 1 and 2 its perfectly challenging and fair when you consider that it was intended for pistol start and not using quicksaves, as well as, the fact that no one was aware of the intricacies in the game like how you could prevent Pain Elementals from spawning lost souls, and how you could get perfect accuracy with the chaingun by tapping fire.

Being a skilled and experienced player helps a lot. UV-Max is fairly easy because getting all secrets will constantly keep you buffed and well armed, it's like the comfy way to play on UV. I'd say going UV 100%/0% kills/secrets (or at least not grabbing any items in secret areas where there may be enemies) would be more challenging to do.

Not to mention, pistol starting is a whole different ballpark to playing levels back to back. In a way, it's both a good thing and a bad thing; good because the maps are built around the idea of this more challenging play style, and bad because some parts of the game will become a walk in the park when you play back-to-back and start a map armed to the chin.

I unironically like brutal doom

no comment on mark, frankly I don't really care what he does or did in the past even though I think it's hilarious that he did tell someone to go kill himself like an absolute madman lmao

but while other mods may do the things Brutal Doom does better, personally I think Brutal Doom is just that combination of memorable simplicity in concept that made it a hit. It's Doom but with more violence and blood, the name speaks for itself, there's not too many gimmicks and it made replaying all of Doom a bit different.

I see it most as like a one hit wonder that brought a lot of attention to something niche, and while people complain about all the newfags, fame comes and go and it will inevitably become obscure again after several more years if nothing else becomes a hit. But what mattered is the word is out there, that Doom modding is alive and strong, and who knows, people might take up the art of modding and we'll see more mods. Although if too many are shit BD rippoffs then yeah that sucks, but there's bound to be diamonds in the rough

I've UV-Maxed Ultimate and Doom 2 a few times each, working on Final Doom again recently, most secrets aren't too hard to figure out once you learn about the texture choices/displacements used and how line triggers work, but there are still a few that I've had to look up to refresh myself with "how the fuck do I get this secret, I know it's right fucking here" (I'm looking at you, shoot trigger chainsaw secret on E1M2.) I'll admit that BD is fun, but it's fun in that stupid, over the top way, not quite as extreme as Russian Overkill but it's fast paced and stupid fun that you can turn your brain off to. But I still do prefer other mods to it, once you try new things it'll change your tastes and preferences a bit, and for me I started to enjoy Smooth Doom and high quality sound mods more and more just because it feels great but plays the same as vanilla.

And yes, BD definitely helped bring Doom back into the limelight in the recent years. I'm sure there's a fair share of people that started with BD and moved on to other mods, and I'm sure there are those that started vanilla and dived into the mod ocean later, but the people that praise and only play BD are sort of that silent elephant in the room that everyone tries to ignore. No real opinions on Sgt Mark besides that he's a dick, I couldn't really care any less than I already do about the drama surrounding him.

>>3648046
Yep, agree with you 100%.

It really is sad when people limit themselves to just BD like it's the only doom mod out there, perhaps I'm being irrationally optimistic when I think that maybe, just maybe, they might explore, or better yet, make other things too.

What is the meme that people who like Brutal Doom haven't played most of the other best mods out there.

I've tried Demonsteele, Project MSX, GMOTA, Smooth Doom, Colourful Hell, Brutal Doom, Russian Overkill, LegenDoom, D4D, Beautiful Doom, and so on and I still prefer Brutal Doom/Project Brutality over the others.

If I wanted to play Halo I would play Halo instead of Project MSX.
If I wanted to play weeb animu games I would play them, not Demonsteele.
If I wanted to play Fallout, I would play it, not LegenDoom.
If I wanted to play Doom 4 I would play that, not D4D.

I play classic Doom for classic Doom, but with extra flavouring thrown in. Hence Project Brutality.

>If I wanted to play weeb animu games I would play them, not Demonsteele.
>If I wanted to play Fallout, I would play it, not LegenDoom.
>If I wanted to play Doom 4 I would play that, not D4D.
You have to remember that the point of mods is to give new variety in gameplay experiences. Sure, you can play Halo, but MSX isn't a 1:1 Halo clone, it's modern Halo-esque elements put into classic Doom with amplified enemies and weapons. The mods give a fresh coat of paint to the game and add in new things, and you can say exactly the same of BD; it adds a gorier, more action-focused experience with some modern elements and glory kills for new mechanics. Sure, you can play those other games if you want, but some people don't want to play those games, they want to keep playing Doom but with a new experience to it.
>What is the meme that people who like Brutal Doom haven't played most of the other best mods out there.
It's not necessarily "all people that played BD haven't played other mods", but instead "a fair amount of or a vocal minority of people that played BD haven't played other mods". The stigma mainly stems from more "normie-tier" (for lack of a better term) players, streams, LPers, etc. having played Brutal Doom before playing vanilla and sticking to it and only it.

I have seen it ruin a limb to the point of doctors just having it amputated because there's nothing to save.

There was a guy who accidentally shot himself in the lower leg, the hospital opted to have the lower leg removed because there really was no simple way to fix the bone or tissue damage, so now he has a prosthetic lower leg.

That's more of an after the fact thing though, and it's not like it exploded all over the place, it was just a REALLY fucked up leg.

Does anyone knows how old is Bobby Prince?

I haven't been able to find it. Most pages start his bio either with him getting his bachelor degree in psychology in 1966 or him being platoon leader in Vietnam during 1969

I have only found that his birthday is in March 15, but no indication of year

He must have been at the very least in his mid 20's during nam. That would mean his in his 70's now.

>Playing Marathon recently
>Decide to just play Doom today
>Fighting in an open area
>Look at my radar in the corner to make sure no enemies are coming from behind
>Wait, where the fuck is my radar
>SHIT I DON'T HAVE A RADAR
Sometimes adapting to slightly different game mechanics can take a moment.

To be fair jumping from Marathon to Doom is a pretty big difference. Two totally different styles of shooters.
>>

Are you me? Ive been playing nothing but marathon in an effort to knock the series out. Im getting burnt out but thankfully im halfway through infinity. I just decided to take a small break and play some doom 2 reloaded.

The amount of times ive pressed m for map or looked at the bottom left for my radar is staggering. I'd also panic about "not finding a pattern buffer" even though im playing doom and can save whenever. But i cant get over how buttery smooth the mouselook is for practically any game thats not marathon.

You're not strong enough to take on hell on your own, you need a few more years of survival training and getting stronger before you can send yourself to hell to fight the demons.

Hey here's your nail shooter example:
http://www.mediafire.com/file/fwo9d35slw3wvjn/Nail_Test_5.wad

It should be pretty easy to just copy into your wad. Just copy over the DECORATE text file, the sprites and the sounds and the SNDINFO file and it will work in your mod. Then all you have to do is place the nail shooters where you want them, face them in the right dircetion, give them a tag, and set up a linedef or script to activate and deactivate them.

You can fine tune the exact height the nails rife from in the DECORATE (l left a comment in there, just change the number 32 to be higher number for a higher nail shooter, or lower for a lower nail shooter)

Good luck!

I've taken a few of my Doom habits into marathon, such as a much bolder run-n-gun approach to certain levels rather than creeping around and taking every level slowly. I feel like the game was made for a slower pace due to the limitations of the times (ie playing with wonky keyboard controls only) but it also feels really good as a fast paced game, especially when you get to run around over gaps with that floating snaking feeling. I'm excited to see how the second game goes when you get the double shotguns, they seem perfect for run-n-gun.
>>3648736
I'm about halfway through the first game and I'm having a lot of fun. The preset pattern buffers are a nice familiar feeling because in Doom I usually limit myself to three saves (beginning of map and two save-where-ever check points), but I also tend to save at them every single time I backtrack and pass one by.
>But i cant get over how buttery smooth the mouselook is for practically any game thats not marathon.
Yeah, the mouselook in the source port isn't the best. Playing Doom definitely feels a lot smoother in comparison.

hope you guys enjoy. btw there's gonna be an official update next week from gifty himself but I'd rather put this out here seeing as he's given this a thumbs up

>>3648870

so when you quit on doom you are actually suiciding and going to real life on Earth, and as suicide is a sin, Earth is literally Hell

that really traced edges between my vertices

why the chex soundtrack is so comfy bros?

I'm curious to see what kind of maps will come from such restrictions and limitations, but boy I hope they don't rely on teleporter ambushes like this often, or at least use enemies that don't take me from 100 to 50 in the blink of an eye.

Ambient Occlusion shader that is still firing off even though the Automap is overlayed on top of the 3D renderer because Reshade is a piece of shit.
