This board loved it a few years back, I still remember seeing Arino reaction pictures all over the place.
>>
>>3591867
Still does, but with no new releases recently there's no reason for a thread.
>>
>>3591850

one of the best retro game shows ever. if not the only one worth watching.

needs more dedicated English translations. this drought is pretty harsh, hoping for thanksgiving.......................
>>
I have only a handful of subbed episodes, does anyone have a good source of translations?

Watched episodes 1 and 3 from Season 1, and this is one of the best things I've ever watched.

Are there dubbed copies at all? I love the show and have no problem with subs but it's really something I would just play while doing something else and not devote 100% of my attention to it.
>>

There was a dubbed version but it was beyond awful.

>>
>>3592064
Keep watching and you get used to the language.
Later you can learn it properly to play full games in it.

How would a Game Center CX movie be successful?

It's only game related show worth watching.

If you want to join the leading sub team then do it. You know the email to hit up. gccxraws is the one. Have 4 fully timed and typeset full episodes completed. Translators are working on two of these; one as collaboration between groups and one as straight up member of the group. Also working to fix the Pokémon episode but some translation help would improve it.

Not needed:
Encoder
Typesetter
Timer
Any technical work of any kind

Needed:

Not factual? A cursory search through the /vr/ archives at desuarchive gives this:
http://desuarchive.org/vr/search/text/gccxraws/page/1/ by following the page you can see a trip identified with posting links to the site. Now, page 1 has a deleted post:
http://desuarchive.org/vr/thread/1171548/#1189728
Scrolling down in that thread leads you to this post made by Kakaricho, the translator:
http://desuarchive.org/vr/thread/1171548/#1197015 with a link to an imgur gallery containing email correspondence where the raw provider melted down at the translator.

I have found accusations of the raw provider being harassed by another trip but nothing actually substantiated with evidence; if you can find any evidence then post it, otherwise leave.
>>
>>3605342
Do you have anything at all to back that up with? We have the archives that go back to when this happened, and can link back to them to back up our arguments. That is factual. You, on the other hand, have made assertions without evidence and ask us to believe on faith alone, ignoring what the archives tell us.

In short; put up or shut up.

Hmm, do you think all this supposed drama has finally caught up to them? Or at least the main members?

I myself have a fan-translation project going on and the stuff I see mentioned on these threads scares the crap out of me. This stuff is like poison, at least IMHO.
>>
>>3605413
People who work for free tend to fall into one of two groups. Total beginners who are looking for some "experience" by bluffing their way into the hotseat, and uber-spergs who will quit the very second someone offers them an excuse. Common themes include "someone else worked on something I wanted to work on" and "if nobody APPRECIATES what I'm doing, maybe I should just stop!".
>>
>>3605413
Fansubbing itself seems to be dying off. Go look at /a/, nearly everything's simulcasted and shows are falling through the cracks because no one's subbing them or retranslating them in the case of shows hosted by Daisuki and Funimation..
>>
>>3605416
There are also those who help out for free without acting like wackos. I can attest to that, at least in my own experience. In the end I guess it's just luck.

>>3605417
I know what you're saying, the heyday of fansubs is definitely over. Sometimes I see an old group or two coming back a sequel or some such and I'm like "wow, that's weird and unexpected". I didn't expect this to happen to GCCX, I see it as a separate scene, I hope they find time or motivation again one day, their work is frankly awesome, you can tell they care.
>>
Is there a link with all the special episodes exclusive from DVD releases?
I downloaded all the stuff from https://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=762702 but it doesn't has the extra stuff, only noticed that because they quoted those extra episodes in normal episodes sometimes.
>>
Don't suppose someone over at /jp/ are up for the translation job are they? I mean they're just another board of ours.
>>
>>3605691
While this might come as a shock, not everyone who knows Japanese wants to translate things for you. You're not just looking for someone who knows the language, and likes the show, you're looking for someone who actually wants to do lots of unpaid work for no good reason when there's already another team that will get around to it eventually.

It doesn't have to be unpaid you know

As long as the material is good enough i can see plenty of people paying for it through donations or something. I know i would. As long as the end result is released for free and not behind some sekrit club paywall, i mean.
>>
>>3607240
The second you get into donations for translations, you wind up in a very shitty situation legally. For tiny podunk sites that translate Naruto or whatever, it's hardly worth going after them. Someone translating your satellite show and making a few hundred bucks a month off it? It's time for some anal rape.

>The second you get into donations for translations, you wind up in a very shitty situation legally.

I know. It's kinda unreasonable to maintain a paid, regular fansubbing group for something like this. Point is, someone can still approach any /jp/ diehard weeb and pay them for some translations. It doesn't have necessarily to be unpaid, which was my point

>>3607245

Most of those translations are terrible because they don't know japanese on a native level and miss personality traits and little details. Because most translators just use dictionaries.

Fun episode.

I didn't realise DX was going to become more of a thing, with that teaser of some kind of Sun/Moon demo. While I like Hamaguchi, I don't like how he's just a Nintendo ad tool.

The Green challenge was a fun way to advertise Pokemon while still sticking to the general principle of the show, while DX is just lazy. At least they're not using Arino for it.

I wish I can find some bootleg DVDs of Game Center CX with English subtitles while I am in vacation in Shanghai.

They always have these bootleg DVDs with Engrish subtitles for untranslated stuff.

I once bought a DVD of Studio Ghibli movies with some documentaries included as extras and said documentaries are actually interesting as they never had an official translation anywhere.

Also, the movies themselves just rip the subtitles from the official DVDs.
>>
>>3611298
HK-subs got killed by fansubs.
And most HK-subs were absolutely terrible. Machine translations from Chinese translations of Japanese and the like.
>>
>>3611305

That Ghibli documentary I found was a holy grail in my collection since it had English subtitles even if they were Engrish.

>>But they're better than nothing.
I've never understood this argument. If I take the Mona Lisa, pour on a bottle of paint thinner and then whitewash the canvas so I can doodle a cartoon lion, is that better than nothing?

The alternative isn't "nothing", although it might seem like that to someone who is retarded like you. The alternative is waiting until some nerd comes along and does a decent translation.

If I wrote a book that was vaguely successful in English, and then it was translated into French by a complete moron who just ran it through Google Translate, is that a case of "well, at least now the French people have SOMETHING to read!"? No, it's a blatant crime against art.
>>
>>3611312
It was some Ghibli documentary that was apparently only released in Japan without subtitles.

Usually, for the movies, the official Japanese DVDs and/or Blu-rays have well made English subtitles, but for the documentaries, they usually have no subtitles save for a few rare cases.

The documentary I found was one of those documentaries without English subtitles in the official Japanese release.

So is Arino's "gameplay" scripted or not? On one hand, He relies too much "miracle plays" and they oftentimes show that they have cue cards and scripted lines for him to say. On the other, you just can't make shit up on live broadcasts and shit, like 6 hours just playing stage 98 on quest of ki/24 hour lemmings/budokan/bomb jack and the other times they really show him dying multiple times on one boss.
>>
>>3611871
There's the odd example of him getting a bit reckless just for the sake of a more entertaining clutch victory in an easy game, but by and large it's just wasted hours of play and flukes. I think the most obvious thing they exclude from the audience is how often they have an AD bring Arino back to the level he died at.

Heck, the latest episode had him preparing for what is usually a horseshit battle against Mewtwo, buying 50 hyperballs, and then he gets god luck and catches it on the first try.

As for cue cards, those are common for any intro. If you think he really has no idea what game he's going to be playing that day until he says it, you might be overly gullible. Any show like this is going to have some degree of scripting, but if he is being fed lines constantly, he's pretty good at hiding it.

The show's still going pretty strong, it's just that recently Arino broke his collarbone during a comedy event and went through surgery, so it's sorta on hold right now. Thinking out loud here, but if some sort of information sharing situation could be agreed upon regarding episodes being worked on, via private communication, SA and VRiSFAGS could both benefit greatly.

There would be no overlap, no wasted effort, and episodes could be "claimed" as exclusive fodder for each group.

This scenario would benefit SA and all consumers of subbed GCCX content. Under such an arrangement, made and executed in good faith, the original .TS broadcast files would be made available to SA along with the existing raws that they sub upon. In addition, AviSynth scripts that describe the episodes as they were encoded would be shared.

This would allow SA to use the raw as is in order to create a sub file. Then, rather than hardsubbing the sub file onto the .MKV and making a "copy of a copy" at CRF 21.5, they could use the original AviSynth file and .TS that were used to make the raw to hardsub the completed sub file into an "encoded once" hardsub. Encoding settings can be shared as well, as long as nothing is degraded. Suggestions for improvements will be heard but are unlikely to best the existing methods. CRF 19, 60fps, same quality as VRiSFAGS raws, with SA hardsubs on top.

These things I can give them. I'm not paying 10 bucks to give up my secrets. If we can enter a mutually respectful and beneficial dialogue, it is possible they can be given out for free—in the interest of all fans.

Softsubs would be preferable, and will be the standard for us. It's been proven that OCR can obtain any timed dialogue by means of skills. Hardsubs made by SA this way, however, with assistance from VRiSFAGS, will be the same quality as the raws. Also will be able to teach 60fps frame-perfect timing methods (RS is a frame off a lot of the time, indicating an easily correctable misunderstanding of timestamps).

So just putting that out there.

Only the best from random retards who feel like "subbing" an episode, pick a random meaning out of the half dozen on offer and hope you get lucky.

辛口 is a pun on a few different levels, there's no English equivalent. I guess you could do something dumb like call him chili mouth or something. I'm sure some editor with far too much time on their hands can make a pun, I guess "fiery tongue" would be about as close as I can come up with off the top of my head, it covers most of the bases.

Episode 229: The Kacho takes on Quiz Tonosama no Yabō 2: Zenkoku-ban, or what was essentially the sequel to the sengoku quiz game that Arino played years back in season 4.

Arino's pokemon red/blue/yellow/green journey enters it's final part, part 4.

Arino's next special was a Mega Drive Special, in which he took on Sonic The Hedgehog 2.

I'll lay Nina's translation on it if it's an episode she's got done and just waiting with no one to time or typeset it. Thing is already timed and typeset right now.

I'll let new translators lay their translation on them—bring the skills and get the script to make life easy. Always room for one more.

Or our trusted member or trusted associate will get to it eventually. SA releases one of these first and I'll still lay Nina's translation onto it. It's kismet.

Set up a free Micro instance on Amazon S3, download two or three episodes at a time, and stream it to your phone with Plex or Kodi. Delete watched episodes and download the next so you always have fresh content queued (or bettery yet, have a script for that).

Super Mario Land on GameBoy is a good episode, Arino really hams it up. High quality version direct download:

Mega Man 4 two-parter and Donkey Kong Country 2 three-parter are also good quality and good games. Direct download links for those seem to be down.

Gimmick! is supposed to be one of the best games ever, direct download link is still up for that.

Hikari TV can handle 10-bit per pixel color (1.07 billion colors as opposed to standard 16.7 million) but this also comes with 60fps framerate. Since the HD version and all "bonus" TamaGe visits in subsequent episodes are 30fps, it suggests that the original was 8-bit color. So maybe the original transmission was Deep Color, but probably not.

I don't think anyone would recommend that someone new to the show begin with untranslated episodes. Translated copies are clearly superior. They are also not illegal.

High def version was all fuzzy anyway compared to a normal episode...it's like they went to Joe and Ernie's Camera Rental or something to make the 4K. Or used whatever Fuji had lying around.

They're clearly better at using the normal equipment.

Clock Tower? That's one of the ones translated by SA, then licensed by kotaku, and then re-licensed by discotek and given a new sub track by SA's main translator. There's a batch torrent on nyaa that has the discotek version of those episodes without the kotaku dub voice.

I saw Shinya Arino at a combini in Osaka yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Dude that's creepy. I had a similar situation.

I saw Kibe at a Motel 6 in Houston yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Nani desu ka?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “Ore wa ochinchin ta dasuki nandayo” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued checking in, and I heard him groan as I walked off. When I began to pay for my room up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen card keys in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Somebody tell that gook to put those back” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not understand English, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the cards and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “Wakarimasen?” and then turned around and looked at me with confusion. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each card and put each room on his tab and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by panicking and crying.

Friend simulators are shows where the viewer is made to feel a part of the group, either by having an unscripted/semi-scripted nature, or by the cast directly addressing the viewer through the camera. The four comfiest of these are MST3K, GCCX, Top Gear, and RedLetterMedia.
>>
>>3659079
search harder
>>
>>3659086
The fundamental thesis of Friend Simulator television programming was laid down by Phillip J. Fry in the monumental Star Wars Trek episode of Futurama, whereby the principle show for feeling one has friends when one does in fact not is Star Trek.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is a show about a man who attempts to simulate having friends by building them in space so he can watch cheesy movies. It's a show about friendship simulation.

Top Gear is for describing to people what GCCX is if you're on SA. The good thing about it is Clarkson #rekting the BBC with the new Amazon show.

I believe the final entry you cite is not a show at all and as such warrants no comment.
>>
>Tfw trying to beat retro games for hours isn't as fun as GCCX makes it look.
>>
>>3659506
no it's not
i decided to sit down and just go after xexyz, took me 4-5 hours but I did end up beating it legit on console. the last 2 worlds are tough, especially since it's gradius like with upgrades that you lose everything on death, so there was a few bosses you only had one shot on per continue cause you'd lose all your shit if you died, so you just suicided the rest of your lives.

then later i went and re-beat Super Mario 3, all worlds, without a game over, took around 2 hours maybe. first time i went without a game over actually.
>>
>>3659336
>The fundamental thesis of Friend Simulator television programming was laid down by Phillip J. Fry in the monumental Star Wars Trek episode of Futurama

SO THAT IS WHERE THIS FUCKING FRIEND SIMULATOR COMES FROM!!!!
>>
>>3659641
I would assume. It's where the initial claims of GCCX as such originated over three years ago. The teamwork and good cheer of the Enterprise crew made Fry feel he had friends when he did not.

Doctor Who has utilized the "companion" trope for 50 years, whereby the companion is a stand-in for the viewer in order that one may feel one has great friends and adventure.

In any case, the friendship simulator television program can be different for everyone. If a show filled this purpose, it is such.

What determines whether they give a game a 2nd day or not?
Just watched Galivan and thought it was a shame they just dropped it with 2 levels left, I was enjoying both the game and Arino's reactions. I thought for sure Arino would want to complete it to at least make up for missing his party.

The whole problem used to be Suda having to catch the midnight train home for the long commute. Not sure what could justify it these days, unless the director and pre-play game scouts agree that there's sufficient footage already and to go on would be diminishing returns.
>>
>>3663590
If they only have a little bit left on a game, there's a chance they might save it for the next time they do a stage event at Odaiba.
>>
>>3663590
Part of it has to do with whether Arino wants to do it, the other part depends on how much more footage could they get if they let him continue playing.
Prince of Persia, Battletoads, Donkey Kong Country, these games had Arino by the balls while also piquing his interest in trying to finish it on another day. They are also all games that have complete variety between stages so whether he beats them or not doesn't matter so much as the fact that continuing to show more of the game isn't going to grow stale as he nears the end. Quest for Ki is an exception because he was literally stuck on one of the last stages for an eternity and the fans were giving him all their energy to beat it.

I know that given the current sub situation it's probably better to watch the raws, but spolier the challenge results next time.

>Season 20: Episode 15 (#231) Clock Tower 2 (Part 2) {PlayStation} premieres on Thursday, December 22nd.

Anybody guess it would be a cliffhanger?
>>
>>3664845
Shit, isn't that the really bad one?
Also, why horror game 2 days away from xmas eve?
>>
>>3664869
Because it's Japan?
They don't get and want anything to do with the "real" christmas, which is also a good thing.

Japan worships KFC as a holiday brand, think about that
>>
>>3665443
That price seems high and that chicken seems different than Western KFC
>>
>>3665468
I'm sure that big glaçage chocolat adds a lot to the price.
>>
>>3665487
That seems to be French for "chocolate icing". KFC gives out huge chocolate lava cakes that spew molten fudge into your mouth for cheap.
>>
>>3665468
Shit's expensive in Japan

which ep is this from?
>>
>>3665468
The Christmas sets are some serious fucking shit. You have to preorder this stuff way in advance if you want to get your chicken fix

Arino was out for about two months with his broken collarbone, it might be because of that.
>>
>>3666138
You can still play video games with a broken collarbone, ive done it before.

ow the edge

I doubt his agency would let him.
Plus, he'd had surgery to fix it.

I thought Noda was back, he used to be cool and have Arino come on while he was hopped up on goofballs. Then Sunsoft gets a call.

Not him but pretty sure that's the 24 hour lemmings.

Personally I think retro games are fun, but consider your position and his position, Arino has a whole team around him, a time limit, the game always comes as a surprise, depending of the tittle he never knows what to expect, all that makes the things more dynamic and fun for him: a imposed challenge with a audience. Meanwhile you're just a alone guy playing in the dark of your room for nobody but yourself.
Not to say that he's also a former comedian, so he makes fun of seemingly normal stuff that you would probably overlook, he just enjoys it in a level that you don't.
>>
>>3669734
Also he's getting paid and basically having a sleepover with friends

I always wondered how they hooked a famicom up to a monitor like that, do Japanese computer monitors have RF or something?

Even Kuboken can modify a Famicom to output RCA AV signals via yellow/white.

>>
>>3669812
Not sure about this one, but in most cases they just use small flat TV's.

>Japanese computer monitors

It's a TV. A Sharp, IIRC.
>>
>>3669812
The displays they use throughout the series are actually tabletop TVs, and for the longest time they went through a huge, lengthy process converting the R/F to RCA, hooking it up to the recording equipment, and then hooking it up to both Arino's TV and several other displays to monitor the feed and allow the viewing audience to see the game. Later on in maybe season 15 they changed most of the recording equipment, I know they use a Framemeister XRGB so the show must have upgraded to an HDTV as well for Wii U segments.
I do wonder what kind of picture quality Arino gets on his end, flat TVs are known to warp how a game looks so it might actually be affecting his ability to play the game when the screen scrolls.

>Oh Megaman 4, let see if Arino has trouble with this one
>Not even one minute in and Katayama gives him the weakness chart
...Well, that was a fast letdown, I prefer when the ADs gives some time to see if Arino will have trouble or not, sometimes they help him too fast.

Also, in episodes like Ocarina of Time and Wrecking Crew they jumped huge chunks of the game, in Ocarina case was almost unbearable (now I finally get why this episode is not liked despite the game being great).
However I don't think it ruins the whole thing, even those episodes still have fun bits.
