Which are the best Rogue Clones with Tiles?
So no, i don't mean roguelikes in general, but the ones close to the original Rogue. And with tiles!
>>
The Fushigi no Dungeon series is good.

Don't listen to him, the Mystery Dungeon series is very different from Rogue. MD2 is excellent and you might love it but it's most definitely a roguelike, not a Rogue clone.

Fatal Labyrinth for the Genesis is pretty similar to Rogue but with a graphical interface. But your best bet from what it sounds like you want is to just get a tile set for Rogue itself and play using that.

>But your best bet from what it sounds like you want is to just get a tile set for Rogue itself and play using that.

Yes! That sounds amazing. But how does it work? Can you just give me an example link of a tileset working directly on Rogue?

There's an amiga version of Rogue with a tileset.
>>
>>3580170
I don't know since I've never bothered with tile sets, but I do know they exist for Rogue. Just google a bit, it shouldn't be hard to find.

>>3580173
Even farther away from Rogue than Brogue or Shiren.

PMD is where Chunsoft really borked the formula in my opinion adds too much persistence and are way too easy until the end game dungeons. So it really sucks everything that makes roguelikes really fun and all you're left with is an easy dungeon crawler with random layouts.

Too gloomy for my liking, I always liked to go Rogueing with a little more funk in my step.

Yeah I finally discovered this. Not for that map but after I finally read about the controls. It seems I have to press it a few times for something to appear. Is it randomised or is something wrong?

I've not succesfully found a trap with it, just doors. Are you suppsed to press s on every square?

I'm confused about weapons and armour too. Are the random leather and scale mail, etc better than the one I start the game with? They don't have a class rating.

Also, how do I use things like the bow and arrow? The game lets you wield the bow and the arrows - which one should I be wielding for it to work? Is it automatic once you're wieldng it?
>>
>>3582692
Fucking hell now I read a scroll for darkness and now it's gone shitty! I thought it would run out eventually but it's lasted ages, through 2 floors now.
>>
It occurs to me that I should into diagonals to conserve steps and stave off hunger.
>>
I found another great clone with Tiles:
TileRogue.

There's a lot to learn, instead of typing it out for you, read through the manual here http://www.roguelikedevelopment.org/archive/files/misc/EpyxRogueDOSManual/manual.htm

That gives you enough to tackle the game, but if you want a spoiler guide to easy winning here you go. http://www.maranci.net/rogue.htm I recommend trying to explore and figure it out on your own first though, that's the fun of these games.

>>3583653
This is brilliant!
And a better version:

>>
>>3582662
>Are you suppsed to press s on every square?
only if you like starving

but you don't have a 100% chance of discovering a door when you search

>>3582692
>Also, how do I use things like the bow and arrow?
I think you wield bow and then 't' to throw arrows?

note that rogue is freaking hard even for a roguelike
>>
>>3584652
>only if you like starving
Indeed. I cottoned onto how extraneous keystrokes waste game time. I've learned the letter keys (instead of the cursor keys) so I can move diagonally more, for this exact purpose.

My latest score is killed by a Medusa at level 11 with about 1700 Au.

Should I read scrolls and quaff potions straight away just to find out what they are? That's what I've been doing.
>>
>>3579784
>close to the original Rogue
>And with tiles!
...Make up ye mind. It's one or the other here.
>>
>>3584704
>Should I read scrolls and quaff potions straight away just to find out what they are?
Probably, but mind that I'm terrible at Rogue so you might need a second opinion.

>>3585365
Tiles are allowed
>>
>>3584704
More or less, just be careful with the Summon Monster scroll. Nothing like dropping a Vampire on your ass at level 7.

>Are you suppsed to press s on every square?

I use it sparingly depending on my hunger. My approach is to explore each floor and hope I find the stairs down and then look at the map. If there are any huge gaps missing or paths not taken.

Then judging by my hunger and how far down I am I decide whether to go check if there's something good there or keep going. Generally if food isn't a problem I'll check it out. There's a chance of some good loot and in the event I run into something nasty, it's good to know about it to avoid on the way back up.

The thing I love about these games is that moment of decision. Because it can easily be game deciding, but you have no way of really knowing. Going searching for that potential lost room might lead to something incredibly useful or it could be fruitless and just weaken you enough that it eventually causes your doom.

You don't know what will happen and no guide anywhere can tell you. Many times looking back you won't even be able to tell if you made the right decision or not. An analog for life very rare in games. It's what makes Rogue and it's children so very special.

azure dreams
>>
>>3586446
Is this just a random bump? Azure dreams is barely a rogue-like let alone a clone.
>>
>>3587515
>Azure dreams is barely a rogue-like let alone a clone.
Eh? It's very much a rogue-like, just more along the Mystery Dungeon line than the original Rogue
>>
>>3587585
It is basically a roguelike, but not by the strict definition and like the Mystery Dungeon games are really in the awkwardly named rougelikelike category of games, which take inspiration from roguelikes and then do their own thing with it. That doesn't make it worse or better, it just makes it different and seemed like an odd post given what OP was asking for.

It's all good though Azure Dreams is cool.
