What's the difference between this version and the other one?
>>
It doesn't even work for me, all it does is throw an unhandled exception and close. Trying to play on a netbook with Intel Atom CPU and Intel GMA graphics, WinXP OS. Is such a setup supported? The readme speaks only of a DX9.0 requirement (which is trivially satisfied unless you're running pre-SP2 XP or older).

Yea, same thing (not that I'd hoped for compatibility with 2k or 98/ME to help much anyway).

I'll look into installing some of the later VC++ redistributables which may be missing. .NET frameworks are as up-to-date as possible on XP (1.0/1.1/2.0/3.0/3.5/4.0 with respective updates), if 4.5 is needed then XP wouldn't be supported as there's no .NET 4.5 framework for XP.

Update: the only missing one was vc2015, but installing it changed nothing. I'm not sure what else I could do now except hoping for a patch of the game, as there's no more relevant updates to install I could think of.

Unfortunately, as AM2R was made in Gamemaker, I think compatibility patches are unlikely. For the game to be compatible with different versions of Windows, it would need to be ported to different versions of Gamemaker.

I had a nice little conversation with Daniel Remar (creator of Iji) a few months ago, and he told me something to that effect.

I'm just gonna take this moment to plug Iji. It's a great freeware Windows game with some Metroid influences; it's definitely worth a download if you enjoy AM2R.

250 total missiles.

If you're running out on the Queen you're doing it wrong.

When the top of her head lights up and she steps back to launch the green things, switch to beam (NOT missiles) and shoot the green things, they drop health and regular/super missiles.

Because I don't really want to compile WINE just to be able to play one game.
>>
>charge beam doesn't hurt metroids

Then what's the point of this item? Standard shots injure all bosses, and the charged projectile moves so fast that once you get wave+spazer and everything past that you do minimal damage to enemies because of the fast travelling projectiles.

I'm only annoyed about this because of the reduced missile count in hard mode, I ran out of missiles in my first Zeta encounter and I had to run, feels shitty man
>>
>>3420120

Axiom verge sucked though, combat was really bad, 80% of the weapons are useless, the music was mediocre, the sound effects were mostly generated with that lazy as fuck "retro" sound generator hipsters rely on.

The only good things were the coat powerups and the drone when fully upgraded.

the story is a mess too
>>
>>3420723
Metroid wasn't ever much popular in Japan to begin with, so dunno.

>>3420776

You're right, I really shouldn't be so harsh on it. For a one man army effort it's impressive. It just suffers from feature creep.

It just felt really uncessary to add like 18 different weapons, 3 of which are super duper rare finds that you can only find one of each per run, weapon power upgrades AND projectile size upgrades.
>>
>>3420740

I'm sure there are at least some who are playing it...
>>
>>3420320
>I have a discrete GPU and i3 so that might be it?
Come on, it's a DX9 Gamemaker game, why wouldn't it work on an Atom CPU and Intel GMA graphics?
>>
>>3420752
Holding a charge while spin jumping lets you do a semi-screw attack, though I don't know how effective it is on hard mode. Also, holding a charge has a slight magnetization effect on item drops.
>>
>>3420836

The semi screw attack is a novelty at best and mainly used to kill flying creatures for a quick burst of resources, though I'll give you the tractor beam effect is useful.

God damn it why doesn't the charge beam work on metroids though, the whole purpose of the charge beam in Super Metroid was a failsafe if you ran out of ammo in the middle of a boss fight
>>
>>3420838

Bombs work on netroids though
>>
>>3420843

are you sure? I've tried using the charge scatter bomb trick and it doesn't hurt them at all.
>>
>>3420848

Metroids have to be frozen I think or you have to be in their mouth
>>
>>3420871

By metroids I'm referring to the various evolutions of the metroids. Alphas, Gammas, Zetas, and Omegas.

If you run out of missiles you can't injure them
>>
>Go back to the beginning area partially through the game after getting the screw attack

>>
>>3419871
It's brutal. Thankfully, you can easily sequence break with a little bomb jumping and get the Spazer Beam in advance of the fight which makes it a lot more manageable.

>>
>>3421095
>>3421108
He is planning it, but don't hold your breath with the DMCA takedown shit going on.
>>
Absolutely fantastic. For me it goes

Super > AM2R > M1 > Fusion = ZM > M2

I hate how Fusion and ZM handholded you. ZM was cool and had some sequence breaks but fusion had very original setting. M2 is very clunky and i did not grow up with it. I love original metroid, controls and feels great for nes game and exploration is there.

AM2R had the same linear world as M2 but it didn't constantly tell you where to go like ZM. They only told you that "now you can proceed to next area" with the earthquakes. In each zone you could pick the powerups in whatever order you liked, so each zone was non-linear on their own. With these qualities it felt like you were free and on your own.

Super may have very connected world but there is pretty much just one way to go. Super fell apart only when exploits and shit were found. (i'm pretty sure that mockball for example isn't intended feature). With wall-jumping you only got spazer and maybe bombs a little early, but not much. Biggest thing was that with wall-jump and sparking the grabble beam was rendered useless.

Music of AM2R: spectacular. I really loved it. I cannot say more.

Graphics were awesome, some say that metroids felt "fan gamey" but i don't agree. Sprites and level design felt very professional to me.

I did not run into any glitches. I did afterwards try the trick to get power bombs early with the out-of-bounds glitch. The glitch is pretty broken imo because you can use it to skip straight t queen anyway.

Sure do games age, for better or worse. I was stuck for like 30 minutes wondering how to open the first red door to get bombs due to being accustomed to finding the security station things in Fusion and had to use my extremely slow shit internet to check the internet to find out.

You're asking how to shinespark?

You have to find a long surface where you can run unobstructed, and as soon as Samus is speed-boosting, press down to store a shinespark. Then you can press jump and a directional button, and Samus will fly in that direction.

Has anyone ever tried to "fix" Metroid Fusion?

Like, a romhack that keeps all the same bosses and powerups and basic structure of the game, but removing the bullshit security clearances and making it so you can actually explore at your own pace, and sequence break, etc.?
>>
>>3423725
Security clearances weren't /that/ annoying, and you can just use an emulator to speed through the shitty dialogue which is the main problem.

Yeah, that's really Metroid-esque.

Fusion did bring some good stuff to the table though. the SA-X encounters are all ass clenchingly tense on a first time run. I also like holding R to arm missiles, makes it easy to switch between beam and missile attacks.

Fusion has some of the best boss battles in the series

Strats for fighting zetas:

Slowly approach the metroid until you can see it on the edge of your screen, and fire off a super missile. It's a free hit.

Zeta metroids are most vulnerable right after a jump, and when doing their acid spit. Pop off a super missile when you see an opening.

Then once you've run out of supers, you can just spam missiles until it's dead.

Super pussy method: every Zeta/Omega room has a bit by the entrance where you can hide. At most you'll take breath attack damage (rarely), and can just pop out and shoot it.

That said, i find it rather fitting in my own context. Over the past week, i've played Zero Mission and AM2R, returning to Zebes in Super and seeing how it has changed makes the missile cost thematically appropriate, like the pirates there have reinforced the doors after having to deal with Samus from before.

A thing is retro console or using a retro computer to play old games, but using an outdated machine as your main PC is dumb. I won't even say "security" because XP is falling so behind that nobody is trying to exploit it anymore, but still, you can't properly use on it any modern program or comodities such as USB 3.0.

It sure is. I'd say Super Metroid is the sweet spot between the two previous (Metroid and Return of Samus) and the two later (Fusion and Zero Mission) games - it's not as clunky, confusing and unforgiving anymore as the former ones, but doesn't have all the hinting and handholding the latter ones are known for.

Yeah, Zero Mission really felt like it was intended for those new to the series. I'm glad I've chosen to play the series the way I have over the past week or so, treating ZM, AM2R, and SM as if they were all one game. Chapter 1: Zero Mission, Chapter 2: Return of Samus, and Chapter 3: Super Metroid, with each one getting more difficult.

I dont think the floaty physics in Sm are as bad as people have made it out to be. THe morph ball bomb-jumping is definitely way harder though because you have to push the bomb button way more slowly and the timing is harder

I dont care about my game being wide
>>
>>3430192
Man, i was stuck in Norfair for a really long time, probably the biggest difficulty spike so far but the pay off is that is the area where you get the Spazer, Wave Beam, AND Ice beam and now going through the areas is now trivial. Super Metroid is really cool so far. I cant say if I like it more than AM2R until i beat it though because that game is my favorite metroid game so far (granted I've only played M1, ZM, and these two)

Anyone playing this on windowed mode that is having the same issue as me? Whenever I start the game, the game screen starts blinking, and it gets worse when I open the options menu. The only way to fix it is to switch to fullscreen mode, disable V-Sync, enable it again and switch to windowed mode. It's gotten really annoying.

as amazing as am2r is, is it possible for it to become the base for further metroid hacks? the engine is great, and i assume its super easy to add/alter assets thanks to it being gamemaker.

imagine super metroid being ported to it.

SRAM is part of a savestate. Thus, if you load an earlier savestate, you will also restore the earlier SRAM and lose your current in-game saves. To prevent that, always make a new save state to revert to before loading an old one.

(Tbh dunno if that's what was your problem, but it's an old issue for people to losing their in-game progress and not knowing why, so I thought I'd mention it.)

anybody else like to play metroid games (including newer ones) without the automap? I usually put a card in front of the little on-HUD map and never open the menu one. Welp that's it then, i've finally beaten Super Metroid. Game was really fucking stellar. Hard to say if I like it more than AM2R although I feel that comparison is unfair since this is an SNES title being compared to 2016 software. The world design is undoubtedly the best it has ever been, even compared to Zero Mission, and the final area of the game is very exciting with a great final boss and ending. If Super Metroid was remade with the game engine of AM2R, with a morph ball button and faster speed and physics, it would unquestionably be the best.

If I would rate the trilogy, it would go AM2R = Super Metroid > Zero Mission. I don't know if I'm going to jump into fusion right away, I may end up emulating Prime before I do that but I finally gave the Metroid games a real chance, this was all great.

Not unless you're planning on writing a game maker interpreter or something. Game Maker is much different than C or C++.
>>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xinw6In4To4

Gamemaker has sony-sanctioned vita support for official developers (or anyone willing to ask sony's permission) and will allow them to publish their games to the playstation store. No one can do this with am2r for obvious reasons, but the vita is capabke of playing gamemaker-created games. So the Vita should be able to run it if someone can homebrew a port of gamemaker.

Finally I completed this game

I liked this game a lot, it has some of the best world design and I think the design of the world is a bit better than AM2R in some places, except for Maridia, I feel like that place has the most issues in the game for me including the two bosses which I dont think they were the worst in the game

I loved hoe the game does implement some cool and odd shit like the grapple beam mechanics was was very cool and x-ray beam was nice and interesting. The floaty controls I was dreading before I played was a non issue when playing

Some stuff I didnt like was conveyance, this was an issue from me and it was hard to figure out where to go some parts of the game, a lot of games back then had this issue but, I never had this issue in other metroid games but then again, I guess I'm an idiot

for example in Maridia there is a hole you have to drop through with morph ball but it doesnt seem like it, not this is a non issue because of the X-ray and I agree

(cont)
>>
>>3432836
The other area was also in Maridia where you had to use a power bomb to break the glass, I understand there was an area that looked exactly the same, but I feel like this was more cryptic than it should've been

Lastly is Ridley's chamber, after you beat Ridley you have to go back toward your ship and the only way to do this is to go through this trick wall, now as I previously said, this would be a non issue because of the x-ray, but the x-ray doesnt work for this. I really dont get that at all

Other minor issues I had were stuff like unresponsive space jump, limited shinespark (which of course it's the first game with this mechanic so it makes sense) and grinding for health and ammo via enemy generators was annoying

I cant say I like it more than fusion, ZM or AM2R, but overall I had a blast with the game and I am very happy to finally complete it after all this time, I do believe it would be dope to have a remake with small quality of life improvements, but I dont think it is nearness to be honest

Metroids can only go through their natural evolution cycle on the surface of sr388. If removed, their life cycle can drastically change based on their location and what they are exposed to. The baby (known as the Super Metroid) is a result of a larva metroid aging while being restricted to Zebes

The B.S.L in fusion was in orbit above SR388. On top of that, quite a bit of the BSL was made specifically to mimic the surface of the planet specifically so the Galactic Federation could bread these Metroids. That much was obvious.

The aspect that really showed the difference between a professional work and a fan work was, without a doubt, in the sound department. The music arranges were poor(especially later in the game, the lowest point being the queen metroid fight) and the sound effects were straight from other metroid games(which reminded you they were ripped) or were some (probably) free, stock sfx. This constrast between sfxes is really hard for me to ignore.
Something that really got on my nerves was how you couldn't shoot during the extremely long turning animation and how you automatically snap to edges shin-height(at least you can disable Power Grip).

I also wasn't satisfied with some of the level design and item placement, but I cannot elaborate objectively on these aspects. It did its job and is perfectly fine as far as a modern day game goes.

I do think the harder ones should have tanks that are worth more. Like 3 tanks worth of power bombs or Super missiles or something. By the end you have a lot anyways, so it isn't breaking the game or anything. But at least you feel like you earned 3 items worth for your effort.

I don't think Metroid was ever known for hard boss fights but AM2R has pretty challenging ones with more complex movesets. Hard mode forces you to learn their patterns and kill them efficiently because they do too much damage to be tanked.

Neat that this game seems to be inspiring a lot of people to play Super Metroid for the first time. Same thing happened with me, I think I'm about halfway done with Super now.

So far I don't like it quite as much as AM2R, since it involves a lot more wandering around and figuring out where to go. AM2R had some of that but each area was contained which made it less frustrating, and I thought it struck a good balance. Of course, that element of exploration and wandering around is exactly why a lot of people like Super, so I don't consider it a flaw so much as personal preference.

People were talking about the jump physics being bad but I think they're fine. Yeah it's a bit floaty but I see no reason to count that as a flaw if the game still feels good to play, and it does.

I think that wouldn't really work, seeing how upgrades often help with traversal. You'd be limiting player progression, and unless you had a number of end-states, a proper final boss wouldn't be feasible...
>>
Metroid fan here, very excited to play this. However.

I don't think any Metroid title is reprehensibly bad. Sure, Fusion and Other M are linear and story-focused, but they're still well-made and have their own aspects of traversal and exploration. I also think people are shitting on Federation Force quite unfairly just because it's not traditionally Metroid, even though very few of them have actually played it.

Boss difficulty would pretty much depend on how fast the rest of the playthrough was, but something like AM2R where most of the bosses don't require any special attacks beyond missiles would work.

Alternatively, something like the Ing where the enemies actively steal suit abilities and you don't get them back until the boss would work.

100% item collection would go hand-in-hand with speed, or maybe with which upgrades you'd choose to lose (figuring out, say, where all the screw attack walls are so you can get to them early).
>>
>>3435743
Could do something with parallel upgrades too, where you get entirely new upgrades from bosses at the cost of losing classics (at least until the final boss.

Not sure whether this is correct or not based on how many revisions to the Prime canon there are but I remember reading that the exoskeleton of the Metroid Prime are actually pieces taken from the Space Pirates base used as a shield and that the exposed form is what it actually is. I wouldn't put the Hatcher and Hopping Metroid as part of the Metroid hunter they are too different to be part of Prime unless the info that I put in the beginning is false then I guess the tentacles turned into legs for the hopping metroid.

About the baby metroid getting bigger that is a case of being exposed to Gamma rays I know that for sure. If not on SR388 they just stay as a normal metroid if not exposed to anything like Phazon or something.
>>
>About the baby metroid getting bigger that is a case of being exposed to Gamma rays I know that for sure.
Thats actually pure speculation treated as fact by most fans. Nothing outright states that except for a single comic which is not canon. Not that there is anything wrong with that, I personally take it for fact, but I wouldn't go around telling people like its 100 percent true

also
>the exoskeleton of the Metroid Prime are actually pieces taken from the Space Pirates base used as a shield and that the exposed form is what it actually is.
I am almost positive that is from the non-canon revision of the canon. Not completely sure though

>>
>>3436551
I thought that in grolious Nipponese, it was said that metroids are unable to go through their normal life cycle (larva, alpha, gamma, zeta and omega) without exposure to the conditions present on SR388 and the larvae, instead, just grow larger.
I imagine it's similar to the neotony present in most (all?) species of salamanders, most famously axolotls, wherein without adequate resources, they remain in an infantile/larval state but nonetheless reach sexual maturity.
>>
>>3436675

Do anyone here want Metroid 5?

I do want it but looking at the direction the series took with Fusion and Zero Mission I don't think it would ever be as good as the first three games to me. Do to the Wario Land team working on those. I would want metroid 5, if they make it like fusion in terms of theming and ambiance, or maybe more like AM2R in terms of gamplay because it has less "directing" of the player, but more directing than Super Metroid
