What are the point of playing rom hacks when none will surpass Super Metroid
>>3439016
Because they can get damn close.
Hyper Metroid is fucking fantastic.
Same with Z-Factor, and while I wouldn't say it for the original Redesign, the updated "Axiel Edition" is pretty damn good.
>>3439017
I have a hacked 3DS and even I don't want to touch Federation Force.
>>3439016
I like AM2R better to be honest
>>3439125
Metroid 2 is virtually unplayable nowadays, unless you have a lot of patience
Can this be skipped?
>>3439230
come back later when you get speed booster and screw attack
>>3439250
The speed booster is just in two rooms over, I'm asking if the upgrade can be skipped
What in the...?
A Metroid general styled after the Doom general? "Doom 4 is a Metroid game"?
This is surreal. Am I dreaming?
>>3439283
nope, you're not :)
now we need someone to post the prime manga, and the best hack lists for SM, zero mission and Fusion
>>3439303
Wait, Zero Mission and Fusion and Prime aren't retro.
Wait, Doom? Huh?
>>3439306
>Why skip the 1st games?
>>Even if the original NES GAME WAS GREAT, Time itself wasn't generous with him, the same goes to metroid 2, which was a Magazine made game thus kept exclusive to GB to increase sells, Both games were great, but Zero Mission and AM2R updated them
>>3439317
Nes metroid is great.
>/vr/ creates a organized metroid general after years
>/vr/ creates a general guide for new players too as doom general does it all time
>/v/ comes to shitpost and say that AM2R, romhack and general is bad and everyone should play Metroid 2 on GB with bad controls and dated gameplay that makes even the most retro player cringe in hatred
>/v/ also hates Metroid Prime but praises Federation Force
>The circlejerk bait continues until the janitor shows up and bans the samefags from /v/ as they do on /vg/
just another fine day here on 4chan
>>3439225
Where does this meme come from? It fixes the annoying energy farming by giving you life recharching spots, and the layouts are still simple enough for you to map your way through the game. I'm enjoying it a lot more than 1, it actually feels like some sort of proto Super Metroid.
>Skip Metroid 1 and 2
Hell no, the originals are great.
>>3439350
None of that has happened.
It's weird that half of the OP is about Doom.
>>3439303
Super:
Cliffhanger
Darkholme Hospital
Dependence
Eris
Escape II
Golden Dawn
Hyper Metroid
Ice Metal: Uninstall
Limit
Legacy
Mockingbird Station
Oxide
Phazon Hack
Project Base
Redesign: Axiel Edition
Rewind
Revolution EX
Super Zero Mission
Wet Dream Extended
Z-Factor
There aren't any good hacks for Zero Mission and Fusion.
You can find everything at Metroid Construction: http://www.metroidconstruction.com/
>>3439016
Some are pretty good. Gives you the similar "where the hell am I and where do I go?" feeling that Metroid 3 did. New maps, sometimes new physics, and new gameplay. Maybe you could try some of them out and actually play a game or two before asking what's the point and being a no-fun nigger. Just saying.
>>3439017
>Time itself wasn't generous with him
Wut?
Also I didn't know about that doom connection. Never really got into the prime series but that is still pretty fuckin cool.
>>3439017
>Metroid Prime
>love letter to the Doom games
Nope.
>>3439324
It would be much better for the board and the thread if you could contribute relevant content instead of being a naysaying no-fun nigger.
Is there a GNU/Linux ips patch application? I have an XP partition on my netbook but I would rather use an operating system that respects my freedom. ;^)
>>3439350
AM2R is a fine game, made with love and care.
But to say "avoid the classics" is kind of a crappy mindset.
Also, I'm pretty sure hating Metroid Prime is a sin, but it's NOT RETRO so whatever. Federation Force looks fun.
>>3439474
>I'm pretty sure hating Metroid Prime is a sin, but it's NOT RETRO
On the contrary...
>>3439474
Yeah everyone should play the originals. Especially 1 because of the secret worlds. When I found out about that I shat bricks. Everyone thinks Metroid 3 is tbe epitome of eerie and surreal, but the secrets worlds win that hands down imho.
>>3439476
I see what you did there.
>>3439405
I like how relaxed samus's arm is in fusion
Why the fuck is this here and not /vg/.
AM2R is not retro.
>>3439725
it says metroid general that just mentions AM2R, and metroid is /vr/
>>3439725
>remake of a retro game
>not retro
man, you couldn't BE more wrong
>>3439725
Wrong, no-fun nigger. Delete this and stop trying to look smart in front of the cool kids.
So hypothetically, would DM64 be able to release the assets for AM2R so that other people could use them for Metroid homebrew? I have no idea how GM works but could the sprites/scripts/engine be shared easily?
>>3439405
Zero Mission is so incredibly ugly because of that awful manga artstyle they used. The creator of AM2R did a really good job of mixing the best qualities of Super and ZM sprites together.
>>3439350
>every /v/ metroid thread
>at some point one mouthbreathing retard says /v/ is shit and that everyone that wants REAL metroid discussion should come to /vr/
>every underage reddit /v/ kiddy comes to /vr/ to shitpost
who the fuck does that
>>3439834
He already stated he won't share the assets, Kind of a prick move.
Is it possible to patch a vanilla Super Metroid rom with both Control Freak's controls patch AND a hack like Super Zero Mission or would that send everything out of whack?
>>3440002
If memory serves right, Super Zero Mission already has the control freak's patch built in.
You can somersault in the air, shoot/get hurt, hit jump again and continue flipping
>>3439016
what's the point of living if you know you've already reached your peak and it's all downhill from there
>>3440003
according to the readme of SZM he indeed changed the jumping mechanics, but I really wanted CF for the ZM/Fusionlike button layout for missiles, and the readme doesn't mention them
>>3440020
maybe is because SM and SNES cant hold that
its like megaman X3 zero romhack, you can play as zero but you don't have the sword attacks for the bosses weapons, its just a sprite swap
>>3440004
Who's to say we have reached our peak.
>>3439729
>remake resident evil 2 for current consoles
Welp, guess we can talk about that here now.
AM2R attracted the biggest morons to this board, didn't it? Now you get people claiming that Metroid and Metroid 2 are unplayable unless you play remakes and no one calling them out for their bullshit.
Anyway, generals belong on /vg/.
>>3440180
Oh, get over it. Metroid I and II have aged like milk compared to Super and aren't the timeless classics some people think they are.
>>3440191
Metroid 1 and 2 are fine games, by telling new players to avoid the originals and play the remakes is a shame. That's a shitty way to go about it.
>>3440191
Please do us all a favor and go back to /v/. You clearly don't appreciate retro games, so what are you thinking posting on this board?
>>3440191
They're still important landmarks in Metroid history, as well as the genre as whole.
I wouldn't recommend either for a NEW player though, Zero Mission is an excellent way to gain some bearing on the Metroid franchise and the genre.
Ideally I would say the best order for a new guy to play the Metroid games would be
Zero Mission
Super
Fusion
The Prime trilogy
then dip further back with the original and Metroid 2
All of the Metroid games deserve some love. Even the spinoffs like pinball and hunters.
>>3440191
They've gotten better since they are no longer limited to shitty displays.
>>3439350
but I like Metroid 2
>>3440198
>play Zero Mission first
>canned shinesparks and bad walljumping is okay for a newbie
literally any metroid would be better than zero mission to start
everyone should start with either Metroid or Super Metroid
even Metroid Prime would be a better place to start than zero Mission
>>3440228
it might be a fluke but I have a friend of mine that was so retarded he got stumped on shooting the super missile blocks to find Kraid's lair.
Zero Mission is borderline retard proof and a good way to ease even the biggest dummies into Metroid, if they like the game, then they can go straight into Super.
>>3440193
I disagree. The first two Metroid games don't have any substantive merits at this point other than being pioneering titles. That's not really enough to warrant playing them for the sake of retro novelty. I mean, really, why would anyone want to put up with shit like Metroid I's copypasted rooms, shitty password system, or having to start with 30 energy every time you boot up them damn game? And Metroid II's even worse with its half-empty tunnels and repetitive mini-boss fights, despite all the improvements in made in controls and gameplay. They're just not fun games anymore.
So guys I know this isn't exactly Metroid, but, I think I found the example game that would show how Metroid 64 would of played.
The game itself is called The Divide Enemies Within. You play as a guy in a mech exploration suit waking up hundreds of years after a disaster and now how to survive the new world he is in.
It is a very surreal experience if you're a Metroid fan. I picked up my copy for 2 dollars in mint condition. It is for both the PlayStation 1 and PC. I think there is an article where the devs themselves stated that Super Metroid was their main inspiration for it. Definitely given it a shot.
>>3439398
>Super Zero Mission
What version of the Super Metroid ROM do I use for this hack?
>>3440279
the japanese/eng rom supports it
>>3440196
>>3440180
and you /v/fags should stop with the shitposting
if you like it or not, this thread belongs to /vr/
/vg/ its already full of /v/, Reddit and tumblr autistic nintendofags loving other M and Federation force
and even if this thread was created there, they would say that this belongs to /vr/ or nintendo general
>>3440236
You can legit get stuck on it if you miss a map station, which you can't go back to. This way you have no other way of knowing the way than randomly bombing shit.
>>3440221
me too
>>3440241
>I read too many video game reviews and think that's how to actually talk about them the post
metroid 1 would be better if killing a boss didn't shower you with missiles
so much of the game's exploration revolves around finding missile tanks, which don't matter because ridley is a shitter and you can just gun him down for 75 missiles
>>3440310
>stop disliking what I like the post
>>3440312
That doesn't make any sense. If you killed enemies if you went along you'd always be at full missile capacity.
>>3440241
Speak for yourself, your whining doesn't count as actual critique.
>>3440002
It depends on the hack. Hacks that change how Samus moves, even with something as simple as the ability to go back into a spin, will get overwritten and potentially break the hack when patched with Control Freak.
IIRC, Super Zero Mission is one of the ones that breaks with Control Freak.
>>3440003
Control freak doesn't include that ability.
>>3440486
>>3440002
Control Freak rarely gets along with hacks that make their own changes to Samus's mechanics. Doesn't work at all with AngryFireChozo, for instance. It does surprisingly well with SZM -- the result is actually playable (which can't be said for Redesign with CF). But it overwrites both the rechargeable shinespark and respin.

Getting some mixed messages here, folks. Heheh.
Does anybody here like Metroid: Fusion?
>>3441375
I like the atmosphere, but it's too linear for me.
>>3441375
I love metroid fusion, probably my favorite metroid other than AM2R
I know a lot of people's favorite metroid, it has a fantastic world, gameplay is great, the story is decent and it has lots of cool gameplay secrets, like the crystal flash and the charge beam stuff
but I had some issues with conveyance with Super metroid and I never had that issue with other metroid games
Which Metroid game is this metroid from?
>>3441441
>the one for ants
>>3441453
Fuck bomb jumps and fuck Wall jumps. It's 4am and I've been stuck in that bitchass sand level from Super Metroid for an eternity.
>>3441651
Ah, takes some time getting used to, but that's the fun of it. You need to time when you can do a circle jump. Atleast that's what I do.
>>3440236
Getting stuck is the fun part you mong
>>3439012

you have to roll into a hole on the ground with the crabs that you cant see, I would blame the game for this, but the x-ray exists
the problem with that is later in the game you have to go through a false wall that even the x-ray cant see
I beat all the 2D metroids but I never got into the prime series
hopefully I can find a proper mouse and keyboard configuration because I am not using a controller
>>3441987
You'd need a hack like the goldeneye n64 mouse hack. But even then it'd still be a bad game.
>>3442412
too bad that no one can rebuild the game on UE4 without nintendo of AMERICA going apeshit
now heres a small project that is a bit more ambitious than AM2R
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kjwg_Nv50g
>>3442501
>HE POSTED A NEW VIDEO
OH YES I JUST CHECKED HIS SHIT A FEW DAYS AGO
>>3442501
The HUD looks cool, but what makes it more ambitious than AM2R?
>>3442521
complete reimaginating of metroid fusion
as a super metroid ROM hack. so all of this is done within the constraints of SNES limitations.
>>3442526
Ah. Breddy coo.
>>3442501
>am2r took 10 years
>MFW this wont be finished until 2025
>>3441375
I fucking love Fusion. It controls perfectly, has great boss patterns, and is pretty spooky compared to most of the other games.
Shame about the story though.
>>3442526
The work he's done so far is astounding.
>>3443134
Would be awesome if saxes would show off secret techniques, it could be a tutorial for new players.
>fight sax, almost win
>crystal flash out of fucking nowhere
>chain shinespark based boss battle
and here's another Metroid 2 remake
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv_bBEE7Rz0
>>3444047
I doubt anything will be better than AM2R to be honest
>>3444056
my honest opinion is that metroid 2 is already better than am2r
>>3444071
okay
>>3444071
nice bait /v/irgin
>>3444081
Honestly the best part about AM2R was the backgrounds. Mediocre music. Awkward boss fights. Queen fight is a big let down. Puzzles are too easy. A distinct lack of large rooms that aren't either ruin exteriors or Metroid nests. There's a little bit too much direction, you don't get to lose your bearings often enough. The beam weapon is too weak. By and large bosses take too many hits. The maximum firing rate for missiles and beams is too slow. Bosses don't allow for enough alternative strategy in the way you combat them. When you actually kill a metroid it's not very satisfying. Too many morphball mazes. Game is rarely if ever scary or unsettling.
It might be better than Zero Mission or Metroid 1
It is not better than Metroid 2, Super, or Fusion
>>3444104
>artificial difficulty Metroid battles
what a spicy meme
>>3444104
>every other missle will get deflected
>super missile gets deflected every time
>can't alternate them or anything like that
>most reliable way to get a super missile in is to go melee and eat a claw swipe for each one
smhtbqhwtyf
>mfw I go to /vr/ expecting actual discussion instead of /v/ shit flinging
whelp, I don't know what I expected
how stubborn should i be about not using guides or maps on metroid 1 and 2? i get lost for long enough that i don't pick up the game for a while and then it gets worse
how mad did y'all get when you saw the federation force samus cameo? my blood pressure is already too high but nintendo doesn't care
>>3444112
and yet you contribute nothing of your own
How in the shit...?
>>3444360
shienspark from outside, store it on the incline, drop a bomb then shinespark horizontally
>>3444367
Thanks m8, god I hate shinesparking so much. Also, where do you access the room in your vid? I've been there but had to quit the game before I got the missile, now I can't remember where it was.
>>3444380
top right of the map
>>3444380
Shinesparking is gr8 m8
I still remember when I got the super secret in Metroid Fusion, felt like my hands were moving faster than my thoughts
did it on a real life DS exactly once
never been able to do it since, not on real hardware, not on emulator
>>3444381
Thx bb
>>3444383
I just don't think the mechanic works well with the gameplay style. Metroid is about exploring and taking your time working things out rather than pixel-perfect maneuvering. I mean yeah there's always a puzzle element with any shinespark, but more often than not you'll spend a couple of minutes working it out and a couple of hours trying to execute the bloody thing. The game doesn't even teach you the fundamentals like storing charges, using slopes, morph sparking etc.
>>3444397
>The game doesn't even teach you the fundamentals like storing charges, using slopes, morph sparking etc.
that's why it's fun
Gentle reminder that the Chozo statues in Zero mission were marked with a bird head on the map, but unless you looked close it looked like simply a red circle with a shine. I made that mistake too, and it seems like the AM2R guy made it too.
God now I wanna play Metroid again, fuck you guys
I've only ever played Zero Mission, what should I know if I want to play Metroid II? How difficult will the map making be? I've done it for Wizardry before but like, literally only the first floor
>>3444804
Expect a somewhat similar experience to Super metroid, only more of being confused of where to go. Not a strong title in the series, but still worth playing.
>>3444804
play metroid II then AM2R
1.2 may come soon
What metroid games to play on a new 3ds?
Okay, so I'm having some real issues with the queen fight.I've got the attack patterns down so I can get through to the fourth room with a good amount of health left, but I keep running out of missiles. I've got 230 regular and 18 super, is this really not enough? I've completely cleared the map of (marked) items so I'm not sure what more I can do.
>>3444970let her eat you. what to do next should be obvious
>>3444970
Shoot those spiky things a few times for energy and more missiles then scoop them up by charging the beam. You should be doing that all along.
>>3445110
Oh shit, had no idea you could shoot them with your beam since missiles just bounce off them and screw attack is the easiest way to dodge them. I'm an idiot.
>>3444954
metroid, metroid 2, and super metroid are on virtual console
you can emulate all of the above and also play fusion and zero mission if you have homebrew
metroid prime hunters if you have the cart or a flashcart
>>3444970
How the fuck are you running out of missiles when your stock is that large
I could understand running out if you had less than that, or were playing on hard, but you've got literally no excuse
>>3439398
>Play Redesign: Axiel Edition
>was fun
>play Z-Factor after
>completely lost
fuck Axiel Edition, fuck it's perfect map subscreen, and fuck it's Zebes Express
>>3445472
Redesign Axiel Edition does a lot of things right, but I dropped it because I was irritated of being lost every 5 minutes
>>3445476
but it tells you exactly where to go
>>3445481
not really, it implemented stuff you couldnt do in the initial game like going through tubes which was cool, but was frustrating me
I got lost a lot in super metroid as well so yeah
>>3445483
>game implements it's own hint system that tells you points of interest, exactly where you have seen power bomb and speed booster blocks, and exactly where all the chozo guardians are
>"not really"
>>3445486
>exactly where you have seen power bomb and speed booster block
doest do that, the hint system just point to somewhere on the map, not specifically where shit is
there were also pits that you could get out without me restarting the game
Redisgn is cool, but too frustrating for me
>>3445509
Some '???' markers put you in a spot where it was obvious where to go next. MOST were put right on top of the next item to collect or boss to fight.
And there are no inescapable pits in Axiel Edition.
You're nuts, m8.
>>3445514
>auto walljump
>had to spend an hour doing it

?
I know this is off topic but I remembered with Sakamoto said about the ending of Fusion about what happened when she absorbed the SA-X. At first when he said she reconstructed her genetic condition I thought he meant she was back to normal but then I read up on vaccines and gene therapy along with looking at the reconstructed Space Pirate base on Zebes in Super and that's when I came to the conclusion that Samus's Chozo and Metroid DNA fused into one. This means she has all of her traits from Metroid 1-3 and her X absorbing ability from Metroid 4.
>>3445701
She became the Doomslayer, the chozo walker, the scource of pirates and galactic federation
if Fusion someday receives a sequel, prepare to see something based on DOOM 2016 plot and the newest Alien
Fusion, FF and "yuck"other M already gave hints that the GF went full UAC, wit the idea of creating monsters for their army using metroids and whatever they are dabbling now
Expect adam to be something in the lines of Samuel Hayden, and let samus do the dirty work, until he finds a way to ditch her out of his plans
>>3445531
Axiel Edition rewrote the Wall Jump code so that you just had to hold jump and press away from a wall, and that was it.
It's basically like Other M's Wall Jump, except instead of holding a single direction and pressing jump multiple times, you held jump and alternated directions.
>>3445701
She never lost her traits from 1-3, she had just gained a weakness to cold from the Metroid vaccine.
Absorbing the SA-X removed that flaw.
I only have 95% complete in AM2R. Anyone have the 100% completion map?
>>3445973
She was also weak in her defense, SA-X also fixed that.
>>3445989
the days of /vr/ being a low key board are gone. Now we're being shuffled into busy general threads where conversation will stifle down to memes.

>>3443134
Jesus Christ.
>>3446247

>>3439012
Liam from TBFP says he really liked Federation Force, both single and multiplayer.
Will /v/ finally stop liking him now? That's like when Woolie became the official Other M apologist.
How do I get past this? There's no way to build up momentum easily except outside the room but when I get in there's a power bomb wall blocking the way.
>>3446405

I think they're meant to be circles like the things the items are held in before they're broken open.
>>3444456
Huh. He's right.
But I've noticed that Zero Mission's bird heads are irregularly shaped, and appear to be shifted left or right depending on the room layout so as to not obscure any connections on the map. See the location of the Bombs, and the hint statue three levels up and to the right for example.
I'd say that DM64 went with the ball for simplicity's sake, rather than having to deal with multiple tiles for the same thing which could potentially obscure a connection anyway.
>>3440312
metroid 1 would be better if you didn't have to grind forever to get some energy/missiles.
>>3450817

wait should one really play super metroid before am2r? I guess it would make sense story wise but wouldnt having played SM first make more sense gameplay wise?

AM2R is Metroid 2, SM is metroid III

Actually guys, upgrades in Zero Mission was marked with a Blue Dot, which changed into the Bird Head once it was picked up.
Bird Heads marked statues that held no upgrade, since they could be used to recharge ammo and energy.

The Power Grip is a special case since the statue at it's location doesn't become a recharge station. Instead of becoming a Bird Head, the room is marked with a White Dot.
As you can see, the Blue Dot from the previous screenshot (Plasma Beam) has turned into a Bird Head.
Best Metroid toy?
>>3453662
Y'know, I always disliked how Retro tackled Metroids in 3D.
Just having the mandibles hanging off the bottom, completely separated from the membrane just looks kinda off, whereas the 2D versions of Metroids all had the mandibles partially encased within the bottom of the membrane.

Metroid 2 was not confusing in the slightest. And whether or not you like it, it ranks with Fusion for linearity. So please read before you respond. At least in 2 no one held your dick or told you where to go.

What are some 2D platformers with movement systems as deep as Super Metroid?
Seeing how speedrunners play the game shows just how much intricacy there is to controlling Samus, between all the powerups, hidden skills and other tricks. What other games are like this?
I prefer the original Metroid II to AM2R.

That's fine.
>>3458727
Me too friendo. That atmosphere

>>3459014
Super Metroid is a bit clumsier than ZM and AM2R due to its age. The physics and controls might feel off.
However, it far exceeds both games when it comes to atmosphere and exploration. If the controls really get on your nerves, give the Control Freak patch a try.
>>3459019

I've been dicking around making a romhack for Super Metroid off and on for months now. Every time I go back to it I make a little change here and there.

>>3463487
You simply hold the jump button all the time until you have to do the wall jump. If you start running and jump both in the right spots, you should be able to do this.
Trying to time that shit is pretty frustrating though, good luck.
>>3464008
Are you sure? Because it seems to me a full jump from the latest point (which is what tutorials seem to recomend) will greatly overshoot it. I don't even have high jump or anything.

Start running from the other side of the door (Move yourself up against it, shoot it, then start running). Any further away and you'll be moving too fast.

Just finished it, what a cool game. I don't remember if I played all of Metroid II, but I feel like this is a very cool remake. Obviously a lot was new, but the main elements the original established were there. Felt a bit more linear than expected, but hey I like Fusion so that's A-OK with me.
Playing on Normal was a good choice. While early on was easy due to playing other metroids before, the lategame was hard like it should be. I like how Hard is an option even on the first run in case you're super good at Metroid. I'll go with that if I replay the game although considering how linear it was, one run is good enough for now.
88% items and 5 hour time. Not bad, but I have no clue what I could have even missed.
Might as well address my few issues with the game. Why was there so much walking near the end? I get that you gotta build tension, but there were like 3 waterfall rooms that just kinda existed. Maybe something cool was hidden there, I dunno. This doesn't include the victory lap at the very end, that was cute and not too long.
Letting you leave the first Omega fight is a dick move, as you can't go back to Save/Heal until it dies. There's no real reason to leave that room besides getting the SM capsule to the right early, so I just kinda had to die as all its health came back and I wasn't the best at dodging it yet.
Not an issue, but I did like how the overworld music becomes more moody once you find the research team dead. Music overall was goood.
Overall, super fun fangame and I really should play Zero Mission. Glad you Metroid fans got something fun to play even if it ain't official.
>>3466908
>Why was there so much walking near the end? I get that you gotta build tension, but there were like 3 waterfall rooms that just kinda existed. Maybe something cool was hidden there, I dunno.
There's nothing there. It's just a weird thing the original game did that was copied over to AM2R:

The only issue with conveyance in super metroid was that fucking glass tube super bomb shit, I could work out everything up until that point. Fuck that pissed me off bad.
decided to try fusion again for the billionth time, combination of losing saves and losing interest has caused me to stop and start a lot
i'm still hating this game. i can appreciate the things people love about it, but yhe lack of freedom so far has been horrible. adam is suffocating and keeps locking doors so backtracking is only possible when you're allowed. the hub leading to the sectors as opposed to a fluid world is maddening in the first place. playing metroid like metroid seems to be forbidden. most of the movement feels smooth and fun but walljumps are less versatile which kind of hurts. it's understandable that they wanted some control over what sort sequence breaks are possible.
am i being unfair or stupid? does some of it get better?
meanwhile, i'm loving playing zero mission again for the first time in a while. still hand holdy and easy as fuck but my nostalgia boner makes me more forgiving of it.
>>3469323
By the point in the game that you need to break the glass tube you've seen half of Maridia, including gigantic regions you can't yet reach. You've also seen the remains of a former glass tube and the presence of another room directly above the tube, locked behind a green gate.
If you can't have figured out that something at least needed to be done in there, how did you get this far in the game?
>>3469346
There's even a platform above the tube. Maybe putting an item in there (and thus a symbol on the map) would have helped more people get it, but adding that extra nudge feels kind of cheap. I've heard suggestions like adding a room with a yellow door and a breakable tube, but that's too heavy handed and turns tubes into just another door.
>>3469335
The best way to experience Fusion is to just take what items you can find on the intended path and save the backtracking for the end of the game
It's not like missiles and power bombs are any good in Fusion anyway
>>3469394
The best way to experience Fusion is to do a 1% run.
>>3469323
Do you ever even need to power bomb that tube? You can get into Meridia from the Ghost Ship.
>>3469448
The wrecked ship entrance just leads to the tube (green gate glitch aside).
>>3469448
You're limited in where you can go. Unless you do the green gate glitch, you can't enter the majority of Maridia from there.
Here's a horrifically compressed map showing where you're limited to.

Next time I play Super Metroid I'm going to try to do Ridley before Draygon via bomb jumping. I Imagine getting the timing to skip that enemie's projectile is going to be hell.
>>3469681
You can bomb jump in lava?
>>3469689
I'll try for Phantoon > Kraid > Ridley > Draygon
So yeah I can bomb jump thanks to suits.
I could just do that gravity boost thing but i prefer to avoid such obvious glitches that make no sense.
>Taking off Gravity suit to increase velocity in liquid.
>>3469695
I didn't think it worked.
I tried doing an RBO recently; right now I'm stuck in lower norfair trying to kill Ridley fast enough. It sucks but the point is that you don't need to gravity jump, a simple wall jump can take you into Ridley's Lair.
>>3469702
The walljump requires you to take off gravity too. You don't get enough height without the weird lava physics.
>>3469702
See i wasn't really interested in doing reverse. I tired to get in there via that wall jump before with the gravity suit and couldn't do it. I looked for examples but every speedrunner seemed to either go at it without gravity like you or do the glitch. So I felt like it just can't be done with gravity suit for some reason. I'll give wall jumping another shot next time before attempting bomb jumping.

I don't think you should care about that, since out of 500 fangames, probably only 4 or 5 of them are decent, meaning nothing of value was lost.
>mfw there's a Metroid general
Fucking A, a Metroid general.
I'm a metroid fan blahblahblah, and I wanna become a game designer. Some months ago I decided to dedust an old project of mine, a remake of Metroid 1.
Sure it's already been remade once (twice if you count Super, thrice if you count Metroid Remix), but I intend this to be designed differently, and the main goal of this thing is to gain proper game dev experience so I could tackle the original games I want to make after that.
Game is being built in Construct 2 (saw room transition are doable so I settled here. So far only the most basic of movements is done, and right now I'm working on the spinjump) and is aimed to play like Fusion but with Super's aiming and weapon selection (it could be changed for GBA by the players + dedicated morph ball button).
I'm aware of what happened to AM2R, so I will post updates about it only here to avoid that. Though I could still work on it if I'm unable to share, it takes half the fun away to see others play your work.
>>3472671
Super isn't a remake.
>>3472671
Nice sprites. They're like this neat little mix of Metroid and Super Metroid. But then, I guess that's your intention.
>>3472723
Yeah, it's a total revamp but in terms of design it's basically Metroid 1 on steroids.
>>3472723
It is, same plot, same characters, same setting, same enemies
>>3472729
Are you on drugs?
>>3472728
I don't think so, Metroid is pretty different to Super as far as design goes.
Did the Linux port of AM2R ever get released?
>>3472727
Thanks, and yeah that's the goal, to have Metroid 1's proportions so that the environment comes out big for the player, On top of Super's grungy aesthetics I also chose to use the SA-X pose because it's just the best pose as far as 2D games go.Varia suit and Gravity suit are now palette swaps and don't give damage reduction. For that now there's the Barrier Suit (a voluntary use of the Varia suit's mistranslation) for 50% damage reduction and giving the typical huge pauldrons.
>>3472741
Only an unofficial build of v1.0

>>3472742I was going to suggest using the original Varia colors for the Barrier Suit, but then I realized.. pink doesn't really seem to suit the modern Power Suit design.
>>3472759
Then I guess you must have brain damage, then.
>>3469218
Nope, there are still some glitches. Nothing serious, probably (1.0 had nothing serious either). Also, Gravy Suit Stanky Leg
Someone should reverse engineer it and leak the source code then
>>3472832
>>3472851
that doesn't seem to account event order. Metroid 2 happens before 3 (Super), Super shows it in the intro.
>>3472765
[spoilers]Yeah nah, Pink wouldn't work. I wanted to think of something that gives Samus' iconic poldrons without being tacked to an environmental powerup, like in Prime 2 and 3.
As far as areas go I took the original layout and added another (obvious) pair of areas, Crateria/Chozodia (but frozen so you'll need the Varia Core to travel outside of the temples) and its abandonned underground laboratory as its depthswhich can only be accessible by blowing up Ridley's ship

well shit
what's with all the doom lovers in this thread
I'm just gonna paste my idea for a future Metroid game here because I like feedback.
>After the events of Fusion, samus begins to feel odd and uncomfortable
>While she is floating through space, her ships computer Adam gives some exposition
>Suddenly Samus' ship is hit from the back and she begins plummeting toward an unmarked and uncharted planet
>Samus wakes up to a totaled ship and Adam offline
>She exists the ship, and gameplay begins
I specifically think that this game should have the absolute greatest feeling of isolation. As such, none of the music should be as upbeat and mystifying as the Prime or maingames. Keep all the songs have a feeling of uneasiness. Also, this being an uncharted planet, I don't think there should be any signs of Chozo or even any traditional upgrades. The game should be genuinely unsettling or even terrifying.
Through the game it is realized (assumed by the player) that Samus is slowly beginning to mutate into a Metroid herself after she had ones DNA injected into her in Fusion. This should keep the gameplay fresh by giving Samus completely new abilities and powers. All the powerups would also need to be acquired through new means, since there are no Chozo artifacts. Despite it giving her new abilities, it should also be made apparent in her movement and mannerisms that she is in great pain. Maybe even have a part of the game slow her speed and jump down to limping, before she gets it back as a later powerup.
>>3478823
I like multiple franchises.
Also someone made a really kickass mod.
>>3478826
There would be 2 major cutscenes in the game. One intro and one ending (the ending would have minor differences based on the clear time and percentage). Samus should talk in NEITHER of these and remain totally silent.
>the game ends with Samus on the brink of death. Mutating and having her body be completely destroyed my the Metroid DNA
>She sits herself up next to a rock and manages to remove her helmet despite it being fused to her body like the rest of her suit is (this only happens if you get the best ending)
>her face is all mangled and barely recognizable
>screen begins to fade to black as we cut to first person, samus' perspective
>Suddenly a bright light and the sounds of a ship landing near her
>Galactic Federation soldiers are seen approaching Samus
>The player gets hope that Samus is finally going to be saved and be okay
>"Samus Aran, you are under arrest for the destruction of the B.S.L Station and disclosing multiple government secrets. You have the right to remain silent.
>The last shot is Samus being dragged onto the ship. The camera pans and shows that the ship is a Galactic Federation medical ship
>cut to credits
What do you guys think? Would you like to see a Metroid game done similarly to this?
>>3478831

>>3478870
Someone somewhere must be saying "MOAR!!!"... But I'm more curious for the idea of samus suffering mutations from Metroid DNA.
>>3478826
Sounds like the most simple and safest way to do a metroid game. All you're really saying is "make a new game but this time she's part metroid", which is what Fusion was. But that game messed with the actual formula a little more, you can debate if a more linear metroid is a good thing, but at least it's shaking things up. You just want the concept of Fusion, and the actual game of Super.
Also:
>She exists the ship
Samus existing as her spaceship would make a far more interesting idea.
>>3478823
because all doom lovers, and even the devs, are also metroid players
>>3480941

>>3481257
imo dreadnought is pretty damn near complete as it is
only real thing it "needs" is a dedicated levelset for it and
>implying anyone makes levelsets for gameplay mods
>>3481316
Can they even do room transition like in the Prime games, where 1 room = 1 map?
How do I get through here?
I cant maintain the speed
>>3481595
>>3481316
its possible to do this, but then who will do the maps?
a metroid TC map would need atleast a 40map megawad or something on the same scale as Knee deep in zdoom, Ancient Aliens or EPIC, each large map separated as a hub, thus there's the boss fights case, who would sprite kraid in all 4 angles unless someone decides to do a prime remake based on Valiant
but then, a Metroid Doom would be "free" from all DMCA bullshit

40map? MAH BOY, have you played Hexen? Hexen uses Hub Map System. Probably would need AT MOST 20 maps.
Also, trivia: Two bosses in Metroid Prime Hunters are actually 2D sprites, because rendering them as 3D would take too much processing power
Also, another trivia: current GZDoom devbuilds and ZDoom stable build have Voxel support. And GZDoom accepts 3D Models, soooo....
not sure if AM2R is fine to discuss here, but i'm stuck at the Tower Boss. i know how to attack him, but i can't seem to find the correct timing. everytime to try to approach him, he performs one of his own attacks, making it very, very difficult to hit his open spot because you need to avoid getting hit yourself.
any tips? I'm playing on Hard btw.
i also don't have the ice beam yet, for some reason that i don't know. i just didn't find it anywhere yet.
>>3482876
Ice Beam is an endgame item.
>>3482882
really? i looked up some gameplay and people had ice beam that were not as far in the game as i am. thought i missed it somehow.
I've even seen some gameplay of the boss i'm talking about, with the player having the Ice Beam. Are you sure you know which boss i'm talking about? The round spinning one, right after you restored the energy in the tower.
>>3482876
Remakes are fine to discuss.
You've got two choices for the Tester. Either be aggressive as fuck, or wait for your chance to attack when it launches missiles.
Alternatively, you can skip the fight for the time being, take out the local Metroids and find an item that will make the fight easier.
>>3482887
You were likely watching demo footage. The Ice Beam is given earlier in the demos. Where the Charge Beam is located, in fact.
It was moved to later in the game for the final.
>>3480472
there's something extremely wrong about those animations, i can't really place it. are they doing the rotation thing?
then pixels+ particles, i puked in my mouth
then the textures, i continue to vomit
in spite of all those aesthetic things, it seems to play well. making development of fan games easier is a good thing
>>3482952
It might be the way your graphics card handles those. Different graphics card have different reactions. Also, Particles + Pixels + Textures + Rotations were in GBA and SNES.
>>3482615
as i said, does metroid community will group up and do that?
heck there's even The Island for Gzdoom which has a system perfect system for a Metroid map pack
>>3482876
I thought it was going to be impossible butbit didn't turn out to be that bad after I learned patterns and figured out how to hurt it.
The weapons are actually pretty weak, like two missiles will pop them, but they repair. The missile wave is good for repair resupply.remember the enemy descriptionyou have to switch to beam weapons after you've broken he shields. If you aim good maybe even after breaking just one or two segments. It doesn't have many hp after you break the shields.
>>3481630
Shine spark from the right
Destroy some of the spikey floor enemy on the first building roof, shine and crouch at the edge. Walk off about four times left of the edge. About one samus above standing height of one of the platform's will be in line with the cave entrance. You can spark from a standing animation from in midair. If you're spinning it's no good.
There's no point, it's just for a speed run or something. The puzzle to the left through the super missile wall is nothing and will be obvious. The game will train you on how to use the grey ball things.

>>3483025
>>3483025
instead of particles i guess i should have said the gross mismatch of resolution of the effects and the sprites
same applies to the environment, which i called textures which is probably wrong too lol
i think i can explain the animation thing better now- it gives the impression that they just cut up samus into bits then made the bits move and rotate rather than actually animating the sprite
wtf are you on about with the graphics card? i'm just looking at the webm, gfx card has fuck all to do with that
>>3484890
Remember the Gravity Suit glitch with AMD Radeon in version 1.0? That's an example. Another is how in the past some games would not react well with different sound cards and graphics card, having a loud buzzer at random times, or showing textured out of scale, etc.
>>3485058
no i don't remember shit about previous versions i've never downloaded this
as i said before i'm only making observations based on the webm i originally replied to, which as i also said before, has fuck all to do with graphics cards.
>>3485415
fuck, video not webm that's my bad
So, maybe the reason why Samus constantly loses her equipment between mission is that it could be because she has to update her suit so that the more technology can be carried on her ever since the Unknown Items in Zero Mission, and she doesn't want that to happen ever again.
Though by doing so, some items go into the trash since the new suit cannot support them, like trying to play W98 games on W10.Though that doesn't explain Super Metroid where she was all naked item-wise, since there's a 30 minutes split between M2 and SM, unless she could update her suit in the meantime.
>>3485878
She's a bounty hunter. She sells that shit to space pawn shop.
>>3484379
Dreadnought has already space pirates. but then, other creatures would be a pain to sprite in all directions, who would like to sprite kraid, crocomire or even the metroid queen
>>3485919 What if I told you... GZDoom and Zandronum (in OpenGL mode) supports 3D Models and both ZDoom and GZDoom (at least dev builds) supports VOXELS.
So, why not use those?
>>3485415
> Base quality on someone else's video considering GC can affect a game's quality

>>3485971
You've seen a lot of voxel monsters around?
>>3485878
The feds confiscate all her shit every single time because she's too heavily armed, and all weapons technology is strictly regulated. She literally becomes so powerful that it's illegal.
If there was a sequel to Fusion there's possibly no reason she wouldn't start with her power-ups in tact. I feel like it would make an interesting game actually, if she somehow had to acquire new abilities on top of those, but no one seems to be able to decide what those powers should be.
>>3485878
The canon reason for losing her equipment all the time isdon't think about it.
>>3485919
>other creatures would be a pain to sprite in all directions
You can either use 3D models converted to MD2 format, or you can render animation frames with them in Blender/3DS/SFM etc. It would be relatively easy to make sprites for monsters this way, considering we have about 3 to 5 3D Metroid titles to pull from, depending on your preferences.
>>3485878
It could be that the relics she's using are ancient and burn out after a few hours' use.
If Metroid were a movie, who would you cast in the lead role?
I think Jessamyn Duke would make a pretty good Samus.
>>3485878
Maybe she just doesn't think she'll need to bring a plasma beam, screw attack, and hundreds of missiles to retrieve a baby metroid from some asshole lizard she's already killed twenty times.
>>3485980
Not many are interested in using 3D models or Voxels as monsters for (G)ZDoom for... I dunno, no reason maybe.
