Underrated Platform/Sidescrollers thread?

Prehistorik Man.
I mean, seriously the game is so pleasantly beautiful and has so much style that I sincerely don't understand how is it not even metioned often. The soundtrack is competent, flows well with the humor of the game. Its also quite long for a platfomer of its time (IF you play on normal mode) and the fact that it actually has a plot and several different characters involved in the story makes it a lot more interesting.
The only thing that I would complain is the fact that the controls aren't good enough for pixel perfect platforming which the game does require every once in a while (usually in the first levels and in some parts after the second boss). Otherwise, its playability is quite satisfying and has lots of variety too.
There's also a version for good old DOS, Prehistorik II, which is actually the first one I played. Its very fun as well, but I must say the console version really improved it in every aspect.

Wow, I haven't seen this game since I was in second grade. What a blast from the past.

Jazz Jakcrabbit 2
I rarely see people mention it. It was like Sonic but with guns, with wonderful graphics, even by today's standards and an excellent soundtrack:

Konami had solid licensed games during that era. I thought pic related was also severely underrated.
>>3194114
Not correct, Japanese call it puratofoumaa. Belt Scroller is the British term.
>>3196147
Wrong.
The official term used by the Chinese is "Acrobat Skill" or "Acroskill" "杂技技巧".
>>3196147
>Belt Scroller is the British term.
The Brits invented the term beat-em-up, that's the term we use.
>>3194114
Can someone provide evidence of in-era usage of the term "belt scroller"? Or is this another MUH PS2 DVR or Snessss kind of thing?
>>3193362
Was just playing the game boy version of this, it has a great soundtrack.
>>3196181
No, they'll just post their Japanese mags and claim it's proof and imply that Japan should dictate English idioms and slang despite it not being their native tongue.
>>3193267
i cleared this in like 9 hours today but its genuinely pretty fun and the last levels get super hard. it´s on steam, not a shill i just think its worth a play if you liked super mario or touhou
>>3196279
This is nothing like touhou.
>>3196290
>implying it wasnt a bullet hell
>the rockabilly guy not being touhou mechanics at all
in touhou you just float around and shit starts coming at you this is the same but in more super mario environment
gimme a better description if you know better
>>3196309
That's right, it's not a bullet hell.
>>3193362
Played it the other day. Good stuff.
Go Go Ackman trilogy

its sad what epic has become
>>3194118
I prefer the Genesis Animaniacs game.
Easily among the best Genesis games
>>3197119
Yeah it's great too, I still prefer the SNES game a bit better due to how unique it feels, but I also like the lost vikings-like gameplay of the Genesis game.
Based old Konami who made different games for different consoles so there's no "gimped" version, just two great games.
>>3193856
>buying it second hand costs an arm and a leg.
>epic doesn't support old games.
>always be forced to pirate it.
i would love to buy this game but they dont want my money.
Plok is pretty good. Or at least it's not a terrible game with a good soundtrack.
>>3197069
Didn't like the first one. I played through it, but it felt very cheap at times
Are the other two any better?
>>3197324
Actually I think 3 is the best one. 2 is better than 1, but 3 is way better than 1 and 2.
So either try 2 and see if you like it, or move directly to 3 which I think was the best and enjoyed the most.

Holy crap, I'd spend hours on end trying to finish the last level but those fucking ghosts man. Also, there's nothing better than doing the level select cheat.

It's hard as balls though. Never was able to finish it.
The Misadventures of Flink.
>>3197448
gameplay-wise, nothing extraordinary, but damn it looks gorgeous.
>>3197443
I did when I was a kid and with all 24 or so scripts hiddenusing a guide, some of them are bullshit to find
Last time I tried recently I got game over way earlier than I thought.

I remember playing that one, great fun.
>>3197457
I found the gameplay was very challenging and precise in flink
Astal's backgrounds are mesmerisingly beautiful and the soundtrack was amazing. I used to pop the game in the CD player and have the music on in the background while I did homework.
>>3197541
Played Sky Blazer the other day after picking it at random from a rom pack. I'm honestly really surprised with the quality of the gameplay.
>>3193362
nice choice
Are there any Bubble Bobble-like games for the SNES?
This is honestly one of my favourite Genesis games.
>>3200827
No. Mostly for PC Engine. NEO•GEO has some good ones too.
>>3200830
Too bad you can't talk about it anymore thanks to GRAND DAD
Fun Genesis game that I almost never hear mentioned, great for scaring the shit out of kids too with the Hyde Tweety levels

Tiny Toon Adventures

A bootleg Mario/Flinstones game that got popular thanks to some steamer. Spawned an equally popular Youtube channel (Siivagunner, not to be confused with Silvagunner) that has pumped out hundreds of remakes of video game tracks which are set to the tune of the Flinstones theme.
>>3201035
>great for scaring the shit out of kids too with the Hyde Tweety levels
That shit scared the living hell outta me in the cartoon too, no way I'd be able to play the game as a kid.
More of an adventure game than a platformer.

Stop with your YouTube shit, you faggot.

This game.

What, did you only play the beta?
>US: chick is unconscious
>JAP: random bones, nothing extraordinary
>Beta: half decomposed bones
Panic Restaurant on NES is silly but fun to play
>>3205810
I was overreacting.
I had the Japanese cartridge and I was like 4 when I played it so it kinda did impact me. It didn't help that I thought she was really cool and hoped she'd join the good side.
Welp. I was wrong.
>>3209298
She was hot I'll give you that, but I'm a sucker for tight skin tight clothes on ladies. Too bad she was an animal.
How did you even have the Japanese version?
>>3210287

Those weren't uncommon in my country. It was probably not an original cart though, can't remember.

No matter how many times you try to shill this game it's not gonna work, even just a minute of play is enough to see what a piece of trash it is. It's like a tiny little step away from Bubsy in terms of awfulness. I'll give you that it's got a good soundtrack, but even that is far from Follin's best. Give it a rest already.
>>3210350
hey, I am the Plok! shill who considers it a flawed masterpiece, not that guy
>>3210350
That's not very fair. Bubsy is a game whose foundations are cracked to the core.
>1hko fall damage
>sanic running and jumping without Sonic's spin jump, so holding right for more than a second will kill you. successfully completing a level is a matter of slowly inching your way forward
>maze-like levels with no incentive to explore because of the strict time limit
>brutally difficult because you start out with 9 lives (hyuck hyuck)
>background scrolling is nausea-inducing and makes it hard to judge jumps
>ugly character designs that look like rejects from Zool
>mediocre graphics and soundtrack
>WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG
Plok's guilty of, what, no saves and a zoomed-in camera?
>>3210758
Forgot to mention the air momentum, in which you can fight it by holding down a button, but you return to your original momentum as soon as you let that button go.
>>3210758
Plok gets pretty challenging very quickly, and in an annoying way.
>First boss: two guys that spit everywhere and bounce constantly
Okay, pretty tough for a first boss, maybe you'll lose a life or three but it's manageable...
>Second boss: three of these guys
Fuck me.
>>3210350
plok really does have absolutely nothing going for it
>>3196142
The football game in challenge mode is fucking bullshit.
>>3212374
i play it in emulator as opposed to console and i find plok to be quite enjoyable this way.
they should've had saves if they were rational, but wasn't this the ghouls n goblins creator? so they hate the player as a rule.
>>3212456
>they should've had saves if they were rational, but wasn't this the ghouls n goblins creator? so they hate the player as a rule.
Nope, that was all Capcom. These devs made Equinox on the SNES, and the project leads also worked on Solar Jetman and the Wizards & Warriors sequels and would later create Wetrix.
Their explanation for the lack of saving was that they could not afford battery backup and they were afraid of people posting level passwords. They later apologized and described the lack of saving as unforgivable.

>It's like a tiny little step away from Bubsy

>>3212567
In Australia we call them "walkabout simulators".
>>3193856
Way better than the first Jazz Jackrabbit as well. And it was glitchy as fuck. Getting stuck in a wall happens surprisingly often.
I loved Claymates because anything with clay looks cool.
>>3197045
This this this this.
Insanely difficult and severely underrated. Finding secrets is really exciting, best secrets in any platformer.
>>3213702
I rented the shit out of this game as a kid. It had a dope holographic cover and blaze processing.
>>3213702
That game is ugly as fuck. The box looks fine, but in game it's hideous. And uninteresting.
>>3193267
In order for something to be "underrated" it would have to have been rated by someone in the first place but I bet most of you have never heard anyone say anything about the games you're talking about. Basically you're all a group of retards that can't understand the difference between "obscure" and "underrated" because you're all to fucking dumb to know how to speak your own language.
>>3193267
Jelly Boy 2, an unreleased Sequel to Jerry Boy/Smartball, had its beta dumped on the Internet, and it's pretty fucking great, fixes a lot of issues with the original game, adds multiple characters with different powers, and a non-linear game design with hidden secret items necessary to achieve the true ending. I especially love the sountrack, actually listening to it right now. Same it was never released, but I have a feeling it had something to do with Sony being involved. Surprisingly it's pretty much finished, except for one character not being "finished" (she was meant to swim better than the rest, but they didn't implement that so while she still works, she's pretty useless compared to the rest, her power is only necessary at one point) and the music freezing during the true ending credits, but the game keeps going so it's fine.
There's even an English patch so you can read the characters saying "Thanks for saving me!"
