This is the trolling. You know full well that most /vr/ PCM had muffled and unrealistic samples. The only reason to call them realistic is to anger the fans of all the other techniques.

Muffle aside, sample-based synth sounded more realistic than anything else before it.

And really it was just the SNES that had muffle issues. Arcade PCM is a different matter.
>>
>>3181671
>It was all the aliasing.
Amiga has major aliasing, but that's the only system I can think of that does. I actually like it, it partly compensates for the low sample rates by adding some extra high frequencies.

>Why didn't they just run it through a filter beforehand?
They usually did.
>>
>>3181701
>it partly compensates for the low sample rates by adding some extra high frequencies.
Yeah this was my thought as to why they left it in actually - but I'd have thought a compromise would have been better. I remember the announcer on Xenon being practically unintelligible, for instance.

FM synth is great in glorious mono only
>>
>>3185007
And an extremely flexible wavetable channel as a replacement for the NES's useless triangle.
>>
>>3182101
It won't work because the Volca FM is monotimbral and have only 3 voices with 6-operators instead 6 with 4-op.
You might play a patch used in a song tho if you are able to make something in C/C++ or Python that replicate the patch you are interested in with Sysex data compatible for the Volca.
Otherwise, it seems like a fun but very flexible toy. If I had money, I would get one to play with my Microbrute.
>>
>>3185176
It lose the DPCM channel though, which can used to play samples of percussion, voices, or something like bass, as they did in the Gimmick soundtrack to a nice effect.
>>
>>3185176

Yeah, but samples aren't real chiptune, so the GB is better at pure chiptune than the NES. And it could still do this:

You aren't going to be convinced anyway. You call other samples 'too tinny' when most of SCIV's snare samples sound pretty muffled, like almost all SNES samples.

I just pulled the first video I saw. Playing it through VGMPlay, and you're right that it sounds fucked by comparison; the high-hat is jacked. Thing is, I can't seem to find a video that doesn't have the same jacked hi-hat sound.

Still stand by the song, though. I've never even played the game but the music is delicious.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a76oFUArUek
BONUS: unrelated to the percussion comparison since it's just bass, but it's my favorite goddamned Genesis track ever.
>>
>>3186160
>so the GB is better at pure chiptune than the NES. And it could still do this

That guitar sound is a sample on the wave channel anyways. There are even sample kits for LSDJ that use that channel.
>>
>>3188128
RKA is one of the most unique PSG user.

Uses all 3 squares but not the noise, while the immense majority use 2 squares and the noise, as the 3rd square settings are used for noise channel (and many times PSG is used for SEs).

Most tracks have PSG doing some kind of echo/reverb, but toward the end of loop the PSG takes the lead.
>>
>>3188254
That's what it was supposed to prove. That the GB has a magnificent wavetable that can even do samples. GB > NES

https://youtu.be/DRejS-izaZo
>>
>>3185176
Doesn't the GB offer more control for the square channels?
>>
Basically the NES soundchip was limited but stupid simple. It had 5 channels. Two for pulse waves, one for triangle wave, one for noise, and one for DCM samples (very limited and barely used)

I'm not sure how filtering worked. I think it was automatic.

The advantage to this is that it was stupid simple and easy to use. You didn't have to be a professional sound designer to write a good NES tune, you just had to be a good composer. There is a reason why 8 bit chiptunes are the most popular today.

The Genesis used an FM chip. FM synthesis is basically the act of taking two audible soundwaves and running them into eachother. Whereas subtractive synthesis (NES) was taking one wave and "subtracting" from it by using either filters or LFOs. FM synthesis could create sounds with multiple harmonics. The advantage to this is that you could literally stack like 4 or 5 modulators on top of eachother. That is how you got soundtracks like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqMuvFEKCOk

The limitations of it is that with FM synthesis, if you don't know what you are doing it's going to sound retarded. This was compounded by the Genesis' weak 8 bit processor. The only way to really create audible basslines was to stack harmonics on them, creating that "wah" or "farting sound", not to mention the very high signal to noise ratio. I mean after you are done listening to the Genesis Ecco the Dolphin soundtrack
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzdShv9Rfv4

The limitations really showed when stacked up against newer consoles which had wavetable and PCM synthesis, which allowed them to basically take analogue waveforms and digitize them (basically digital sampling)

For me, anyway, I like FM more. With early PCM, it just feels like an inferior version of a record. FM feels like it's own thing, not a poor man's version of something else. And while lazy composers definitely give FM a bad name by trying to write FM music like they would a standard 4 voice ensemble, when they actually embrace the medium it makes some truly unique sound. Early PCM doesn't do that for me. It always sounds like an inferior version of a real instrument version that the composer thought up instead. At the time, PCM definitely had its merits. But now that I can play music on a nearly-live quality...it makes me wish they had more to work with at the time.
