This game does bring out the worst in people with legitimate autism. Once I was taking down a gym when another car pulled up and started taking it down too. There's 9 gyms in town, 7 of which can be seen on the nearby from certain spots without issue, only the school and the one in the middle of nowhere are harder to spot.

The guy who autistically posts the school spawns has been complaining about nothing but magikarps or bayleef raids all day and the 7 I can see from town have been deader than dead.

Best raid all day has been an alakazam at about 1pm, when each of the birds were around they'd spawn almost 5 a day easily, I get the feeling Niantic nerfed the spawn rate to stretch this "content" out even further.

Okay, just leveled up to 34. How the FUCK do you guys keep powering up your Pokémon? I mean, I thought candy was going to be a problem. But stardust is even worse. Couldn't even max out all of my Pokémon and I lost 700K+ stardust. Been non-stop catching Pokémon for the entire evening but I didn't even rack up more than 20K stardust. Poor guy. The red team here do the same and one of the red team works in a place where I shop often. I asked him to tell his team to leave me with one or two gyms, out of 6 and he told me we have 1 gym which is ours. Hilarious. And a lie.
The last time I walked, I went out, took 2 gyms and they came and took them back within ten minutes. 2 were in cars. I walked all over town taking every gym with them right behind me. This went on for SIX hours and I used almost all of my potions. We never spoke and I was left with my two original gyms that I started with, right back at the start, which made the whole thing pointless. Never again. I usually do it at night and put in some shit mons so they're more likely to get kicked out. By the time they're kicked out it would have been at least 8 hours. Sometimes it stays in there for days, had a Nidoran at 120CP at a gym for 3 days, probably because of the other Pokemon in there defending.

Gamepress says you need 40k total badge exp. (gohub says 30k, I dunno)

1 minute of defending time is +1 exp.
Putting in a defender is +100 exp.
Feeding a berry is +10 exp.
Spinning a gym sometimes gives +7 exp but it's rare, I dunno why.
Fighting a defender gives you +1 exp per 100 current CP of the defender.
Raids give +1,000 exp.

Basically a defender who never gets kicked out will take about a month (27.77 days). You can speed that up by feeding berries every chance you get (10 berries per mon per 30 minutes per 10 mons across all gyms per 30 minutes), doing raids, and fighting defenders.

Basically you don't HAVE to hold the gym to grind the badge, you just need to camp/visit it often enough to grind some badge exp every day. If it's a highly contested gym, that's great because fighting 6 mons + depositing a defender is like a free half day's worth of badge exp. Worst case, you get 200 exp for depositing + feeding it 10 berries. Then it gets taken and you repeat. Raids are definitely basically a free day's worth of badge exp.

But if it's a bit out of the way and you can't be assed to visit it enough times a day to get 1,000 - 1,440 exp a day, it's going to take more than a month. I have a gym for example (pic related), that I only hit up on the way home from work. I've been grinding at it since the gym rework and it's still not done. Fucking sucks because it's camped by Mystic carfags who drive out within 15 minutes and I really need to hit other gyms instead of camping it all night.

I have very few gold badges but a large stack of "almost done" silver badges.
You can easily tell which gyms were more contested than others. These screenshots were taken when I achieved the gold badge (aka. the defender came home) so you can get an idea of how much time/fighting went into getting the gold badge.

tl;dr - Ballpark 1 month of defending time for a gym badge. Adjust higher/lower depending on how much you can camp it.

It just fucking sucks because instead of spending the night getting 8-10 hours of defending time, it's like 15 minutes which increases the amount of days I have to go on a detour to hit it instead of just going straight to the batch of gyms I do care about.
