When Misty left there was only 1 new girl, the anime had only been going on for 5 years, and back then people didn't expect there to be countless new female leads or the show to go on forever. Also Misty was still in the majority of the animes episodes at the time at 275 eps total compared to May just starting out, so they had some leeway with their rants.

I was kinda bored (and I had taken a look at the shitposting earlier today) and decided to take a look at threads from around the time XY38 aired, not only here but in other sites that host a Pokemon anime discussion as well.
The results are staggering; it's quantifiably undeniable that in every site, not only discussion was more active and post speed was higher, but the number of people posting was also higher.

There was definitely more activity during XY, but even more in the early 2000's when AG and DP were airing. Sites like serebii/bulbagarden were completely active in their pokemon anime sections and there was huge discussion going on everywhere.

I think the anime fandom has never quite been the same since DP ended back in 2010 to be honest. Whereas the OS aired before most people came online because they were still young kids, AG and DP was basically the time all the teenagers and young adults discussed pokemon online.

I miss those days. 2002-2010 was the golden age of the Pokemon anime fandom.

The group chemistry overall was good outside of Serena/Clemont. It felt like a family and Ash had different interactions with each of them, Serena/Bonnie had sisterly moments, and Bonnie/Clemont had their own sibling love moments.

As for the rivals, Shota was a nice change of pace for the anime. For once Ash had a rival who looked up to him instead of a rival who was always better than Ash. And Alan as a character/rival was ok, it's just that Ash should have beat him. As I said they'll never top Paul from DP anyway so this is better than what we got in BW or in SM.
