This is a bad map, honestly. You have a ton of grass with basically nothing there, but it's also completely away from the main path which is just a straight line. I think you need to start over from scratch. Try to consider both a reasonable length and a reasonable amount of mandatory grass.

>How do you plan on unnecessarily screwing up your game?

I'm making an open world pokemon game where you can even choose the starting town.
But I'm breaking the game into two segments:
>segment 1: The player takes a tour around the region. Maybe the player will have to fight some gym leaders, maybe there's a group of petty thugs they need to deal with... The plot is different for each starting town.
>segment 2: An ancient evil has awakened. The player must revisit the cities in any order of their choosing to fight off the antagonists.
That's the easy part.

The hard part will be making a fair level curve for the entire region, so players don't get fucked over by unfairly strong wild pokemon. What I might do is put underleveled mons in the main routes and the player can rematch trainers if they need to grind. Wild pokemon will be stronger in the optional/alternate routes.
>>
>>33328392
Can you do adaptive levels somehow? Like have wild pokemon levels be +/-5 from your party's average level, and trainers be +3-8 from average.
>>
>>33328237
Looks good!
>>
>>33328994
I think I found a solution but I'll test it out in the morning.

I don't really like adaptive levels. It's harder for the player to gauge when they're ready to take on a boss or not because the boss will always be stronger than them.

If level scaling is my only option I'd need a way to set up a level cap so a player with one Lv 50 mon and five Lv 5 mons won't be stuck fighting Lv 12 mons. It's probably just a case of setting variables though.
>>
>>33329700
You can scale it based on objectives completed/badges earned.

You can do it in either engine, however, essential games are rather notorious for it. Just look up some of the delts forms for insurgence if you want to see what I mean.
For example, this is delta charizard. Venusaur is worse.
Now, on the topic of engines, they both have thier pros and cons. What is it that you want to do with your game?

What do you think about replacing HMs w/ *You should have this type of pokemon*

Like if you played Prism there is a dark mine where you need to activate a generator w/ an electric type.

You'll need water type to surf etc. One problem is that I want pokemon like Snorlax to also be able to surf. So maybe a check like: *If the pokemon able to learn surf - then you can surf*

And then make all HMs TMs.

Another way is to make HMs instead of adding a move add an indicator that this Pokemon can do this. Maybe a ribbon?
>>
>>33320749
Thanks for the tip. I'll make sure to try that out.
>>
>>33341234
>maybe a check like: *If the pokemon able to learn surf - then you can surf

That's basically how I'm doing it, I check the TM/HM learn list. Giving a ribbon could be another way to do it, but I myself replaced the ribbon page with a "field skills" page that lists which "HMs" you've acquired and, out of those, which ones that Pokémon can use.
>>
>>33341234
I'd go with the "any mon able to learn Cut is able to cut trees" approach, rather than type-specific requirements.

As far as gating progress goes, I'd prefer having Key Items to signify which field actions you've unlocked. Having these items is a clear and easy way to see what you can do (if only you had compatible Pokémon), which I think is useful. Having X badges unlock field actions doesn't let you refresh your memory of what you've unlocked unless you actually try it, which is more effort.
>>
How do you feel about HMs/Ride Pokemon as a mechanic?

For me, there are times where it feels like a very cheap way to lock people out of exploring, and sometimes (like when you get Surf) it feels like it opens everything up.

Ignoring the inability to forget them or them being shitty moves, just the mechanic of there being obstacles that can't be overcome until the game lets you.
>>
>>33342625
HMs are necessary in my opinion. It allows you to create a lot of believable roadblocks and locked-off side areas that, as you said, are suddenly opened up all at once when you get a new one. You can easily fuck up region design despite having HMs (just look at the part of ORAS where you get Surf and are IMMEDIATELY teleporter to Mallville against your will, completely negating the fact that the western half of Hoenn is designed to be re-explored on the way there and secrets exposed based on the path you take) but I think having HMs is very important.
Now, replacing HMs with ride Pokémon that serve the same function is in theory perfectly fine since it lets you make the same design choices. SM used ride Pokémon very poorly though, with some rides having literally ZERO use before the area in which you get them like Mudsdale. If you employ old-school region design then they shouldn't have any problems.
>>
>>33342708
Fair points. I just don't think most Pokemon games use them in a satisfying way. I think for the obstacles that you need to backtrack for there should be higher reward, not just low/mid tier items.

There's also the dungeons/routes that have multiple HMs needed, so even once you get one, you still need others, which means you keep returning only to leave empty handed.

Better rewards for exploring and not stacking obstacles would make exploring much more enjoyable I think, leaving the obstacle-stacking super dungeons/routes for later in the game.
>>
>>33341951
>>33342408
It's funny how it took GF 6 gens to pick up on that and even then they replaced HMs entirely with different mechanic and we're like "yeah just make HMs not take a move slot"

Is coraldev still around?
>>
>>33343174
The thing is that the posts you replied to still have the player use THEIR OWN Pokémon to get past obstacles. That's an important factor to me. Using some random purpose-built Pokémon that appears out of nowhere when you call for it is nowhere near as interesting as using your own Pokémon to surpass obstacles.

I actually don't mind HMs. You actually need to plan around having them while still being able to battle proficiently (note that this only applies to the couple of HMs that are pretty poor moves; some of them are good and don't hinder you). It's maintaining this balance that enhances the experience of the journey, for me. Maybe it's not a huge impact, but it's still something.
>>
>>33341234
Replace HMs with usable key items.

Posting a map of the starting town for a project I did a year ago. Not sure if I'll continue on with it but I remember people in these generals like when maps are posted (I have a couple others too) so here it is, feel free to give your thoughts

I am thinking about maybe starting to resume development on the game again. The main snag I ran into is that it was originally planned as a fakemon project when I couldnt really into art, but I've gotten a bit better at drawing over the past year and enjoy making mons now
>>
Bit new to the thread, so sorry for the questions.

I've done some base level "hacks" before (editing Pokemon availability and level curve) and really enjoyed it, and want to move on to bigger things like custom maps and script editing. No fakemons, no form changes, etc.

I'm guessing Essentials wouldn't be a good fit for me because I'm not using any of its strengths. Am I correct in that assumption?

I finished cleaning my pokecrystal ROM of all non-New Bark maps (New Bark, player's house, Elm's Lab, etc. were kept, for now) and connected events, so that I could start fresh when building a new region. I compiled the .gbc ROM successfully, loaded it up in VBA, and the "Welcome to the world of Pokémon" intro worked fine. However, after the sprite shrinks and the screen fades to white to load the player's house, it froze on the frame shown in pic related.

Thanks anon, I appreciate the praise. I always thought the fenced in bit of trees looked weird but I couldnt think of anything to replace it with.

>>33351600
The tiles are mostly public ones that were heavily edited. I comissioned the trees off of a dude on deviantart years ago and had them saved after my old PC died. Kyledove and Dewitty made most of the tiles I used for the map though.

You should post your starting town map as well, I'd like to see it! I named mine 'Springshore' since the other towns are based off of flowers (pic related) and I figured 'Spring' would be the equivalent of a 'pallet' town for that naming scheme.

Today on idea that I will never use because I am shitty at actually making games: Using the areas "between" maps.

Like, you know. These forests in Hoenn you never explore, between Routes? What if you could use soaring to enter them from sky and then open them up from inside?

Maybe open these for public or something.
>>
>>33353806
Sounds like a great way to add ORAS' new areas to Gen 3. Would be a convenient way to catch more legendaries.

You could also invent your own optional side locations. A snowy area in the shadow of Mt. Chimney. A swamp near Fortree. A forest with a different atmosphere than Petalburg—maybe a haunted one, maybe a Lothlórien-style Fairy one.

Is anyone familiar with using pk3ds? I want to randomize X from a .cia and wondering how to include the update.

The plan at the moment is to grab a .cia, decrypt it, use pk3ds then rebuild and install, but if I do that I assume installing the official Pokemon X update will mess things up. Can I make an already updated .cia without installing it somehow?
>>
>>33353724
Thanks man, although I think I feel it could probably reworked. It's more of just a conceptual thing than a finished product.

Basically what I did was I traced the regions outline and then used the pen tool in photoshop to color the shape in. After that I added a brush to give it a bit of texture.

The 'paths' are just white rectangles (with a light stroke) that were rotated and combined and merged into single layers). The towns/cities are obviously just squares but I did the ctrl+backspace trick to fill their top halves in with a bit of white at reduced opacity.

Is there a rom hack of Emerald that includes all the Islands and their events?
Also has all obtainable Pokemon and the Physical/Special split?
>>
>>33354932
>all the Islands and their events
You mean the islands you needed event tickets for?
You can just use a gameshark code for that.
>all obtainable Pokemon and the Physical/Special split
Yes, many.
>>
>>33355001
Okay, the point was to have them all together
It would be preferable not to have to use a gameshark to unlock something within a rom hack

It's currently on version 1.82 and seems to have all of what you've mentioned, including the island tickets being part of the main game.

It probably means you're missing a sprite somewhere. That width function is used for a bitmap. If it's saying the width function is undefined it means there's no bitmap loaded as a class.

How about a mountain interior? Hot off the presses.

My inner Satan wants to make this floor "flashable" dark, while omitting HM Flash/non-HM item equivalent from the game entirely, so as to force the player to navigate it completely blind. This mountain would be relatively late-game.

Don't want to make an unnecessary new thread and the other threads about ROMs are pretty dead so I'm posting here.
Could you guys recommend me a good GBC hack?
[I already read the OP, I just want to hear some opinions.[/spoiler]

>>33359007
Prism and Brown are probably the two biggest hacks for the GB/C. There are surprisingly few hacks that aren't just "original game with enhancements", so if you've already played through Yellow and Crystal recently there aren't too many fresh options.
>>
>>33359007

Here's a short list of GB/C hacks that might be worth checking out.
Pokemon Christmas
Pokemon Dark Energy
Pokemon Bronze (Bronze 2 currently in development)
Maize (6-badge beta available)
Orange (still in alpha, beta coming soon)

There are a few others like Red++ and Polished Crystal, but those set out to enhance the original games rather than create and original adventure.

Everyone only shits on rmxp because of essentialsfag
I know, for a fact, I would treat someone making an essentials project the same as anyone else.
I'm working on one of each, so maybe that's why.
>>
>>33359701
No there's a handful of people that really do just think its shit. Mostly because it runs like shit on their toasters.
>>
>>33359781
I'm not going to pretend it runs great, even on my decent setup, but it allows you to do things you'd be unable to do with romhacking, which is pretty great.
My harvest moon-esque game will most likely run like dogshit though, RIP.
>>
>>33359254
TPPAnniversaryCrystal was also fun
I never caught the actual run so it was a bit jarring to start off in Kanto as if I were playing Red/Blue

It's inclusion of Fairy type, newer gen moves, Physical/Special split, reusuable TMs, cut content like status blockers and the Pokeflute, and it's tweaked story make it a blast for me.

It has such a wide variety of pokemon at every turn, it's great to Nuzlocke
>>
>>33358418
I want to add a cave in an optional area with darkness that can't be flashed through and a big "DO NOT ENTER YOU WILL REGRET IT" sign at the front.
And there's nothing in it. Encounters are too low to get anything worthwhile, it's all Pokémon you could get earlier, and there are no items. The only nice thing I'd do is put a door at the end to take you back to the start that way the player could realize how much time they wasted.

Sounds reasonable.

Anyway, here's where the hidden "down ladder" path leads from >>33358418. Yep, it's just Navel Rock's "Lugia path," just with 7 rooms instead of 11. As I said in an earlier /heg/ thread, it leads to a hibernating Jirachi.
>>
I had the idea of a hack set in a comfy region with a lot of places to explore, and all Pokémon that can use an HM in the vanilla games can use it on the OW as an innate skill, like the Ranger games, but I don't know what to base the region off of or how to make it more linear. If the player catches an early water type that can learn Surf, then it wouldn't be as easy to design around it or to make it feel rewarding. Any ideas?

>>

Thanks anon, I agree the trees look a little blocky, so I'll try to change up some things there.

The map used to have a pond but it was mostly there just to take up space and it bothered my autism to have a body of water on a route that's so close to the shore. I'll try and throw in some boulders though.

Post your favorite route in the series and explain why you like it. I suck at designing routes and want to see what resonates with people.

Hard mode: You have to be concrete

I'll start: Route 38/39 in Johto. After you beat Morty the map opens up a ton after being linear the whole game, and the music sets the tone for the newfound sense of exploration. You get an area that looks unlike any of the other routes so far (heavy use of the fence, farm, unique use of the ledges in 39), new Pokemon (both wild and introduced via the trainers), and a really fun sidequest that doesn't involve battling.

>>33362610
Neo XY is complete shit, but if you're going to play it anyway just don't save outdoors in Lumiose and you'll be fine. There's no way to get an XY hack to work with the update and retain all of the hack's features.

>>33364756
I try to emulate HGSS's style with my maps but honestly a lot of johto routes are different from others in the series because many of them are very wide open and arent really closed in by trees/nature.

Pic related is a route I really like though. A lot of Sinnoh's routes are well done and feel very 'natural' and have a lot of depth to them despite being fairly straightforward
>>
>>33365637
desu Sinnoh did the whole 'natural' feel right, you can tell each route apart (except maybe 213/214) and it helps build the whole atmosphere of the game
>>
>>33365046
That really sucks. I compiled my own version using pk3ds and it reverted the encounters table, you can't have the update installed with that either. pk3ds is open source, so I'll look into getting both to work.
>>
>>33361941
>>33362502
To add on to what other anon said, the cliffside is perfectly straight for almost the entire route, and the one bit where it isn't still has 2/3 continue straight anyway. In saying that, most of that is not visible during gameplay so it may not be relevant.

The map is comfy as fuck though, and like your town you've done a great job on the level design. You clearly have a sense for it that most devs/hackers lack. Take if from a double bachelor's graduate whose majors included game design.
