Ash had quite a bit of on-screen training in AG. Not to mention since he battled a lot of filler characters in that season, his pokemon always got action.

There has been so many moments in SM that im just dumbfounded how much ash just doesn't react to his pokemon getting hurt, even in gym battles he always catches his pokemon if they fall from great heights, hurt and when he was out and about he occasionally atleast got into the thick of it to shield them, but not anymore it seems its so out of character.
