I've been thinking, should I give up on my dream to work as a concept artist for GF? People at Gamefaqs told me that my ideas, Human and Pokémon are shit. Maybe they're right, I do suck at making ideas. Looking at the Pokémon and Human character ideas I've posted here, including pic related, does my artwork really looked that bad? Be honest with yourself.

How old are you? If you're young, you have time to improve.
If you're in your late 30s, no. Your art is nowhere near the quality needed for a concept artist, nor are your concepts really appealing. You'll never make it into a company as demanding as Gamefreak.
>>
>>33196142
Keep trying at it! I actually like these trainer designs and Marina a cute! Cuter than most pokegirls anyway
Keep going!

Never give up. You can only get better. You might not be able to work with GF but there are thousands of people looking for artists on the indie scene.

>>33196174
I'm about 22. And maybe you're right. What should I do to make them look appealing?
>>
>>33196142
Keep practicing your drawing. Your concepts seem fine to me (though I never visited your previous threads so only basing it on the pic you posted,) but definitely keep working on your art.

I do think it's... a bit of a stretch that you would be able to work at GF, but it's totally possible. Do research on the people that work there, maybe particularly James Turner, and see if your dreams are feasible. It won't be an easy road, I promise that, but there's no point in not trying now.
>>
>>33196174
This. Your concepts are decent tho. You should ad more character into your characters tho. Mr rogers and red riding hood are kind of redundant.

>>33196142
I don't like most them, except maybe the red hood and pompadour ones, because I had ideas similar to those and can relate. Doesn't mean the rest are bad ideas, I'm talking mostly about the artstyle.

In any case, don't give up on your dreams OP. You need to improve your drawing skills WAY more than any anon could ever help you achieve by sheer force of constructive criticism alone, but you'll only get to the top from the bottom, and only if you really try. You need better skills before anything remotely near the scale of gamefreak or nintendo starts grabbing your pitches for ideas (I'm not even entirely sure if that's how they do things to begin with). I once heard a guy found out looking at employee lists that a kid from an old forum that wanted to work in pokemon games actually ended up being taken by gamefreak, so anything can happen.

I know it's as generic as advice goes but that's all I got, since I don't care about gamefreak and I'm happier drawing my own fakemon and gym leaders in the privacy of my home with my own rules.
>>
>>33196261
Just saying
Usually, GF makes their characters stand out in unusual, yet conventional, ways. Your designs look too plain, as well as resembling other characters. Try mixing things up. Pretend you're super gay, and summon that fashionista deep in your gay blood.
>>
>>33196142
Did you even try actually contacting GF? It isn't like they browse 4chan and will hire you after seeing this. It's even worse cause you're posting anonimously so anyone can download your stuff and claim it as theirs.
Also our opinion doesn't matter, so many SM haters here but go out of vp or gamefaqs and they're the best Pokémon games (just an example)
>>
>>33196142
I could sketch examples of how to spice these characters up, if you want?
>>
>>33196308

You seem to have potential, but will need a lot of practice if you want to create professional quality art. First, I would suggest that you work on fundamentals, like anatomy and proportion. Also, use references. I cannot stress this enough.

>>
Your designs are fine but your art needs work. GF may be lazy, cheap and understaffed, but they're still the top of the food chain in the industry and have millions vying for their positions.

Never give up, but understand you have to get a lot better than you are now and put in a lot of work. Assuming you're early 20's you have a long way to go and are still way too young.
>>
>>33196142
When people say "work on your art" they mean "study fundamentals more closely so shit looks more coherent." Not "your creations are bad, give up now."

Sorry to spoonfeed, but fuck it's better than wasting your life convinced you'll never get better. Honestly though your art could use some work. Study base things like anatomy and proportion.

Notice patterns or details when you make studies of things and do, ALWAYS make fucking studies of things. Why? Because for starters you'll know how things work structurally rather than just purposefully and why. If not that, do some research. Any kind of research. Study Japanese gang culture if you wanna get an in-depth look on Yanki, read up on toxicology and chemistry a little to get a better idea of what a chemist-like poison specialist should and shouldn't do.

You're operating on stereotypes when you should consider ways to make your concepts have flexibility if not plausibility in how a Gym Leader could work thematically. The reason why they say dreams don't come easy is because usually the things that are hard to attain call for a lot of personal growth to tackle them. If you think you're fine as you are and everyone that says otherwise is just a big jealous hater, you have plenty of growing up to do.

Best post in thread. I second this.

For example, OP, I spent two full years of drawing only animals, using a big animal encyclopedia as reference, until I could draw most animals in the "animal inner circle" for lack of a better term, without any reference. So like reptiles, big cats, most herbivores, a fair bit of fish species, and then I took that knowledge and applied it to my preferred art of designing creatures and monsters, and I'm better for it.

Moral of the story, don't draw more of what you already have, that's not getting you anywhere anymore. You've hit a wall. Study things outside your comfort zone. (study is used strictly. You'll have to buy books, or create digital reference art folders, magazine clippings etc) Draw every day, even if it's only one thing and even if you don't like it as a finished product. Even if you don't like painting scenery, for example, study it. You'll learn things like how light works, how to frame a scene, etc. Organic vs architecture too. Study any and everything, so that when it comes time to draw the things you want to draw, you'll have this large experiential pool to draw from.

Sorry to wall of text respond to another wall of text but this shit is my jam and I wish someone would have pointed me in this direction earlier in my artistic pursuits rather than having had to learn it on my own. Hopefully I can help you out even a little.

Keep at it anon.

I don't know how many times I need to tell people this, but study human anatomy and learn how to draw realistic people before you delve into styalisation. All styles, even anime, has it's roots in reality and anatomy.
>>
>>33196967
Nah, it's best to study both concurrently.
>>
As for Marina (Blue haired girl) and Thora (Green haired girl), how can I make their outfits less generic? I mean for Thora, Bugsy already got the bug catcher design down.
>>
>>33196972
Human anatomy comes first. Ask any cartoonist, animator, concept artist or even manga artist. THEN you can study how to draw pokemon characters, using the knowledge you've gained of the human body.
>>
>>33196993
It's easier to go from realistic anatomy to stylized, yeah, but it's more fun to draw stylized. Keeping drawing fun is vital to keep at and improve. Additionally study only realistic human anatomy you won't get stylization as easily. Finally, have you even looked at mangaka's early art?

I'm not saying you should ignore realistic anatomy, it's vital to improvement but only drawing realism or just studying is the quickest way to burnout.

And reading this thread, yeah there's so much good advice and I need to take it. I've never really done a study and I have a tried and true method of Drawing that is making my art stale. Follow this threads advice and grow beyond the artist you were a moment ago. Grow, because there is no ceiling on skill. Grow through others and then through yourself. Bust most importantly, grow because you want it.
>>
Two things.
1) Learn your fucking fundementals. I work at a small game development company and I wouldn't let you work for us for free. You wouldn't be worth the effort to train you, because you haven't put in any hard work on your own.
2) Aim lower. Even if you get good at drawing and designing characters, you won't get hired at GF right away, or probably at all. Just aim to be a concept artist. I see too many people give up because they can't get a job at that one specific company that they idolize.
>>
>>33196142
I like Wooden Sword Ryu but the others are cringy and terrible and I wish you would spend some time working on your drawing skills before you post them again. I've seen the blue one around and it haunts me.

Your problem is going in with expectations and no skill to back it up. Talent wasted. Creativity wasted. Because your execution sucks.

Animatorfag here, OP

If you're 22, you still have time, I'm not super good or anything, but you have to commit to your dream fully, and practice a lot as well, here is some good advice.

>Practice life drawing
The most important thing, if you can't go to a real life drawing session, there are several sites where you can get a lot of pictures, models and 3D models to draw, do this, with time limits, do not concern yourself about getting the details but rather with capturing the pose, action and proportions, and learn how joints, muscles and necks work as you draw. If you get good at this, your overall art will improve.

>Practice EVERY.SINGLE.DAY
Do the above, while also working on your stuff a bit, see the life drawing as "grinding" or "exercise" and doing your stuff as the "fun part", but I hope you enjoy life drawing a lot.

>Learn perspective and composition
There are many tutorials on this, but practice these with basic shapes like cubes, prisms and spheres, and then apply them to compositions, multiple characters, the golden ratio, foreground and backgrounds, this is more important if you wanna learn how to do backgrounds too, but will also help A LOT.

>Look for inspiration
Look at how other famous character designers simplify the designs, I don't recommend looking at complicated things like detailed manga artists, but rather animation designs, with western look at Shane Glines and Bruce Timm, while look at Toriyama or early Sugimori for the east for example, see what they do and how they draw things like arms, proportions and silhouettes.

>Don't be afraid of criticism
Fuck those gamefaqs guys, but constructive criticism is VERY important, specially who and how they say it, ask for experienced artists but also the opinion of random people will help too, accept and learn from your mistakes.

>Learn some drawing software
Self explanatory, but I reccomend Sai and Photoshop.
>>

>>33198111

>Master a tablet but also the pencil
I usually draw on paper but color on the PC, anyways, I started to draw on a tablet, bamboo or whatever way too late and I'm still getting used to it, but press on with that if you have one, also, keep practicing on paper and take a sketchbook wherever you go.

>Never give up
That's it, I know some folks that started drawing at 28 and now are professionals because they practiced a shitton every day, just do that, be inspired, you may feel down a lot too, it's part of the process but you gotta stand up again!

>>
>>33197758
I'm not sure if it's really OP, but I feel like it's pretty obvious -- not that there's anything wrong with that, of course.

But like >>33198028 said, you need to aim lower than Gamefreak, especially at the level you're at now. Plenty of smaller companies may hire someone who isn't classically trained, but a billion dollar company (who only has ~100 employees), you'll likely need to work your way up the food chain. Start small, constantly improve, and work your way up.

Kek this art is disgusting and these designs are tacky and boring. 22? Yeah, you're already too old and have nothing to show for it. There's no way for you to develop better aesthetic taste at this point. The art world is a highly competitive one and there are thousands of kids practically half your age that draw better than this.

Lmao sorry but I bet you don't even speak japanese and it takes at least 3 years to get fluent-ish minimum if you study hard enough.. Your designs are mediocre as fuck stop attention whoring and making a thread every time you want to change the subject slightly, go back to deviantart already with all the other autists just like you
>>
>>33196142
>Gamefreak
How fluent in Japanese are you? They won't hire anyone who isn't near native level.
>>
>>33197197
That's a little better, but maybe stylize the skulls?
>>
>>33196142
Lets see, first of all, why do you wanna work at Gamefreak? If your dream of working there is too out of reach you might as well give up.
On the other hand, if you really wanna pursue that dream (hey we only live once might as well try it out) you need to know how to speak fluent Japanese, learn anatomy (cuz no offense, while the drawings look great the structure of the characters is out of place completely) and learn how to draw pokémon
If you can do that all just send a godamn job request to Gamefreak
