This isn't even about opinions. Gen 4 is extrenely slow and sluggish compared to every other game in the series (maybe gen 1 was at a similar level). Platinum fixed the surfing speed but there was really no difference in the HP bar or menu speed. Compare DP and Platinum gameplay videos on youtube.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with Diamond and Pearl? I have nostalgia and I don't want to form my opinion until i've replayed the game(s) and heard other people's opinions first.

Diamond and Pearl struggle from slow surfing speeds, ugly designs in areas, (Stark Mountain for example) stupid gym puzzles(literally basic math problems in hearthome) and bad regional dex (only two fire types, can't really access the the new evolution mons)
Platinum fixes all this, and adds more late game content (the battle frontier)

Honestly, DP are probably one of the worst games in the series, Platinum is one of the best.

People say so, but I think they tend to over-exaggerate it. But again, I played Pearl a long time ago, and can't really remember such details about something like pacing. There was complaints about the time between the 2nd and 3rd gym, and how the snowy routes were annoying to traverse, Platinum fixed the former, but the latter problem was still there. Sorry for the non-conclusive answer.
