Aside from the coins, are any other high level players struggling to think of a reason to play this game now?

Think about it:

Don't get stardust from gyms anymore. Heck, we don't even need stardust, because leveling up anything past 3000cp is a waste of time and unnecessary.
Therefore leveling up is pointless. It's just a glorified progress bar now.
The low coin payout of 50 doesn't really matter, because eggs aren't really important after you've filled your regional dex and got a few decent attackers/defenders. Whereas with the old system you'd always want more Larvitar.
Even raids will be pointless, with the exception of legendary Pokemon (excited for those). What use is another Machamp or even a Dragonite?

Only things that interest me now are legendaries and saving up coins for gen 3.

You're right about the walking part though. Always nice to go for a walk, especially somewhere new, while chilling with Pokemon Go. The only difference is that I don't really feel compelled to go for a walk for the sole purpose of this game anymore. In fact, I believe only events have kept myself and many others playing.

Earlier I had a run-in with a dozen of people, mostly yellows but also a fellow blue and a red player, around 10, 11pm.

Everyone is pissed about multi-team, multiaccount players and spoofing gym sniping shitbags. Apparently there has been talks about agreements to keep the neighborhood at a healthy mix of red, blue and yellow. The arrival of raids seems to have sparked a certain kind of growth within our local community that I really like.

Some have said 50, some say 100, I've found myself somewhere between, started yesterdays gym hunt with 750coins, after stuff came back I was at 846coins and a bunch of my other guys came back. Several of them were in the gym for well over an hour, and one of them was 18hrs for sure since I've been monitoring it from my house. But not a single coin from it

Is there any reason why they nerfed the gym exp gained from beating pokemon? Yesterday I got 100-200 per pokemon beaten and today I get 15-25.

Dont bother, it's pure luck as to whether a rival team stumbles across your gym and decides to fight it and manages to take you down.

Just wake up, add a Pokemon to a free gym or take down a rival gym and add your Pokemon. Go into work and fingers crossed that your Pokemon will have been knocked out so you'll be able to get the coins.

Would not be suprised. Fanbase has died down a lot and the sponsors are not buying more Pokestops and Gyms - so they are probably no longer interested in running the servers.

Plus i doubt Niantic ever planned to do Gen 3 or anything. Gen 1 was planned along with the legendary events. Gen 2 was introduced so they had time to set-up the raids.

One the weirder things is that every treat you give a Pokémon awards you with 20 stardust.
Which is a fair amount as you could be dumping several berries per defender and walk away with a couple hundred stardust just because.

I had to battle a 300cp Uown 5 times with a 3000cp Vape to get it out of a gym. I'm pretty sure I had some battles that didn't remove any motivation/cp/health or whatever it is now.

My edit to the current gym idea basically removes that aspect of chance. You know that the gym will kick your Pokemon out in a max of 8.5 hours - so you can plan around that and not waste time entering in multiple Pokemon in other gyms or hoping a rival takes you down.

I think the legendaries should be an event each, they come to every player's closest gym the first time they start the app after the event starts and you have to fight them with a team of 6 (they have like 12500 CP so it's tough even with 6 pokés). Once you defeat it your team leader runs in and catches it with a master ball (just a dialogue sequence probably) he/she lets you register it to your dex to say thanks and maybe lets you use it in your team once a day to take down a gym, I don't know but I'd definitely like to see more interaction with the leaders.

i was honestly not upset by the change to coin-earning mechanics. my local gyms were all either lvl 10 strongholds (of my team) or on a college campus with a fairly high turnover rate. i was lucky to get 20, maybe 30 coins per day (although usually only 10). 50 a day sounds great in comparison and it was pretty easy to get my pokemon into gyms for a combined total of 8 hours. i figured they wouldn't last long, as their CP reduced due to not being fed. what i DIDN'T count on was my retarded teammates feeding MY pokemon, ensuring that they will not come home to me. I can only hope that in the coming weeks everyone learns that the etiquette is not NOT feed pokemon that are not your own.

i havent had that problem, but i was fighting a rival gym earlier today and it kept giving me an "Error" message. there were 3 mystics in the gym. i fought each down to zero cp, one at a time. after each pokemon was kicked out, the gym would not let me fight for 5 min, and instead would keep loading the fight screen then go to "Error". took a while to take the gym.
