Check the guides at >>>/vg/hbg if you don't know how to install them. You won't lose any online features or anything doing so, don't worry. You'll be able to do everything that you'd normally be able to and much more!

I'm replaying through Sky now, and I'm content with it's difficulty level. If there was a hard mode, maybe there would be less items or higher level enemies, something simple like that. No need to drastically overhaul the game.

What pokemon do you guys think shouldn't be or would make a terrible villian for the next mystery dungeon?

What pokemon can you see playing a villainous role well?
>>
>>32557479
villain
>>
>>32557479
I'm sure they could make any pokemon a good villain, but if they pull the non-pokemon card for the third time, I won't be happy.
>>
>>32557254
What would be great is if you had a way to adjust the risks of a dungeon. You can carry certain "cursed" items that you can't drop or lose in dungeons (but you can get rid of them outside of them by storing them). These cursed items are acquired in special areas, so they won't make things suddenly hard yet.
The cursed items have special effects that make dungeoneering harder, but you get special rewards for your troubles, such as extra money, uncommon/rare items, higher recruit rate, and other possible benefits.
The possible drawbacks could be:
-Belly drains twice as fast
-Items are more scarce
-Escape Orbs don't work
-each floor you go to results in your teammates spawning in adjacent rooms instead of the same room
-traps are more hazardous
-higher level Pokemon
-more Pokemon
-spiteful Pokemon (will prioritize escorts over your team, uses up items so they won't drop them if you KO them, camp out near the client)

Also Tales of Elysium!

>>32557479
I would like to see a villain that thinks they're genuinely doing the right thing. Not a bunch of nihilists or selfish survivalists, but a group with extreme ambitions that will cause something to be eliminated, which they believe is the root cause of the world's problems. For example, the villain could be trying to eliminate free will because they believe it's problematic for world peace and harmony.
There are no ulterior motives and no wickedness (at least for the vast majority). Just self-righteousness. The villains are also sympathetic in some way, since they need a motivation.
>>
>>32557640
that's what gengar thought he was doing for half the game in rescue team

Final dungeon has a Cresselia without a shit moveset to make up for harder foes appearing.

>>
>>32558074
he's the one who hears the story about a human becoming a pokemon fucking up the world and assumes it's you, and gets the townsfolk to attack you

his change of heart when he realises you gave your life at the top of sky tower was great
>>
>>32558116
Yes, but he was an asshole, as you could see with the Sinister Woods incident. He was also ]spoiler]the same human that caused Gardevoir to be cursed, and it's unlikely his selfish and jerkass attitude has changed when he became a Pokemon[/spoiler].

I've been craving for a good fic for a while now.
I'm looking for something that:
- Doesn't spoil the Explorers postgame for me
- Isn't a rewrite of one of the game's plots
- MC is a pokemon, don't care if they're formerly human or if there's humans around
- Is relatively comfy
Just throw anything at me. Hell, I'd even read an objectively shitty fic as long as you liked/enjoyed it and it meets the above criteria.
Does anyone know of any fics I could read?

Have you looked into the old PMD groups on deviantart? There used to be a community of artists and writers who would regularly create stuff about their teams based on prompts given out by the group.

I've seen you shill for it before. Guess I'll try it out. Thanks.

>>32559526
I didn't even know that was a thing, but while community efforts can be fun in that community, it's usually an OCdonutsteel-fest with high levels of cringe, if not just alienating to people outside of it. Not sure if that's the case with this one.

Depends on your party, health, pp, moves and items.
About a year ago there was someone on the subreddit stuck in a situation with 2pp left, a type disadvantage, and no useful items. They were using an emulator so they just quicksaved and resetted a few times until they managed to get out of it by bullshit RNG with some item on the floor.

hey guys i leaked the Pokemon Mysteryous Dungeons: Astral Explorations Through The Skies plot
you wake up in the middle of a forest where you meet your partner pokemon and you go to the town. hes instantly frienndlly with you and he lives with his grandpa guzzlord. you start to live with him and get to know his dream: creating an exploration guild. sadly, he has never even been able to get in any exploration guild in the first place (the other kids living in the town have) so all he does is do easy missions he finds on the message boards, usually to get money for his family or food r whatever his grandpa may need. so you start to live with him and do the same. after a while you actually reach the gold rank and you start to meet actual guild members and then you even meet the guild master, an alolan meowth. however the guild master used to be your partner's classmate and bully. thorough your adventure you get to find out that meowth played a trick on the to become the guiildmaster and guzzlord was also involved and he betrayed you nd your firend and he wasnt even his real grandpa. so you run away from town and as you do you meet a pokemon who used to be a human . hes an ash-greninja and tells you the story of how you woke up in the middle of that forest: guzzlord tricked you to get there and then attackd you. because you knew everything abou t lunala's plans to destroy the world of pokemons. it was all about mind controlling the darkcold, a physical representation of all of the pokemons feelings. so you now have to get to the top of the tower astral tower and stop the mance, once you do you find out your parter cant stay in this world any longer because he actualy used to live in the past. but then solgaleo wakes up finds out about what lunala did and brings your partner back bcasue he doesn't want you to feel bad because of what lunala & guzz lord did.

I hope that it becomes a mystery scenario where you find weird shit happening, such as deforestation and sudden aggressiveness of wild Pokemon, which turns out to be caused by the Ultra Beasts. Then there is the mystery on top of that on how they got there. I've said this shit before and made some unique boss battle ideas, which those types of things will likely never be realized.

Starter wise since this is what matters the most.

Popplio looks shit to start and gets some nice stuff in the mid 20's level range. Sing, doubleslap, bubblebeam. Nice stuff there but a little late for my liking.
C+
Litten looks like just you're average fire starter nothing to write home about. Early fire fang seems cool. Late flamethrower is shit.
C
Rowlet is one of two starters in the entire fuckdamn game with dual STAB and it actually learns flying moves unlike bulbasaur with poison. So that's really nice. No idea how leafage is gonna work but if its like ember and vine whip, super good. Early razor leaf and pluck is also great. And then fury attack, also great.
A-
Rockruff (seems likely) has keen eye or vital spirit as abilities, both pretty useful because fuck accuracy debuffs and fuck sleep moves. No STAB till level 15 is a letdown but it does get rock tomb by level at 23 which is super good.
B-

Got the game a couple of days ago, it's breddy gud.
I fought my first Clauncher 2 minutes ago and only then i realized he's in this game. Clawitzer is my favorite water type pokemon, and the idea of playing in mystery dungeon makes my willie go tingly so i was wondering if there's any way to edit the save file via homebrew and make him my starter, as in making him my main pokemon in story missions
>>
>>32571575
There is, actually! You need to do some RAM editing to turn your pokemon into other ones. Someone in this thread used to edit people's save files on request but I'm not familiar with the exact process.

You'll need CFW to do it yourself but you could import an edited save just with homebrew

Bit late, but Power Trip is probably my favorite pmd fic. It's long, interesting, and complete. I also appreciate that it takes a lighter tone than most fics.

Alright, I'll put it on the backburner with the other 5. The only fic I've completed so far is Pokemon: The Unknown Continuum. It was not bad and I didn't regret reading it, and there were things to appreciate, but I wouldn't take my word for it because I am not sure if my tastes are sharp or dull when it comes to literature, especially fanfiction.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/6421734/1/Pokemon-The-Unknown-Continuum

You might like this fic if:
-You are interested in a rewrite of Explorers
-You want a story with zero shipping, even teasing.
-Want a human who actually isn't so cool with his predicament of being a Pokemon, and treats it as more than just a mere inconvenience. Also he doesn't have amnesia.
-350k words is ok with you
-Want a strong-willed human protagonist who isn't boring
-A fic that is completed

Other things to consider:
-The protagonist was deliberately written to be kind of a lawful dick. Thankfully his partner is designed to be likable, but he may not be interesting. The author wished that he made the partner more interesting.
-There is world-building and the protagonist is from Earth (as in "Earth" Earth, not the main series Pokemon world), but it also has Pokemon.
-There is language, which may not be an issue because this is 4chan, but this story is not trying to replicate all the vibes of canon PMD. You might find it a little gratuitous.
>>
>>32575841
I tried, but for some reason i get stuck after installing NTR. pressing x+y in game does nothing and i have no idea what i am doing wrong
>>
>>32576156
The Unknown Continuum was a strange one for me. Tone wise, it was really unlike any other PMD story. A little darker than average, but definitely less so than say, Broken Ideals, but the whole thing felt really dry, though not in a bad way. I think Floyd, the main character, is the biggest positive, and he's probably my favourite main protagonist of the PMD stories I've read. I've seen a few adaptation-fics, and this is probably the best one.
>>
>>32575959
As someone who was disappointed in the main story of Explorers, the episodes were by far the best part of sky.
>>
>>32576156
>-There is language, which may not be an issue because this is 4chan, but this story is not trying to replicate all the vibes of canon PMD. You might find it a little gratuitous.

>>32576530
I have Incarnation on the backburner. I heard it's better than TUC. Is that true?
>>
>>32577386
I think it's a bit better since he more did his own story this time. It seems to be extremely loosely based around Super, and while the pacing is still kind of slow like TUC is, it feels as though there's less filler this time round.

He did say there was a bit of sloppiness here and there such as grammar and occasionally mis-naming characters that he'd dust up after replacing his PC, so if your busy reading other fics, I'd just focus on them for now and by the time you get round to Incarnation, hopefully he'd have cleaned up the chapters.

If you enjoyed TUC, then you should enjoy Incarnation.

I noticed sloppy grammar early on in TUC. It's weird how mistakes in one's own writing can hide like microbes, but when someone else reads it that person sees it like it was sparkling. The likely reason is that re-reading your own stuff is easy due to expectations of what the words are going to say. There is an optical illusion where the word "the" appears twice in a row, but people read the sign as though there was just one because of the expectation of grammar.

>>
Sorry if this is a stupid question but do those exclusive items like pikachu card etc have an effect on the pokemon you're escorting?
>>
>>32577904
Sky did it better, and that's even including the deus ex machina in episode 5 of Sky. I really wanted Jack to get an amazing ending but the thing we got was average if not mediocre. It sucks because it started out so promising but then dropped off at episode 4. People will get mad about this but Ashi really ruined the show. Even if you liked her, there's no denying that a massive amount of time was spent developing her, and then showing her change her ways. For a series finale with very little time as was, it was a terrible decision which ruined the pacing. Awesome aspects set up in the first few episodes, such as Jack's hardened personality, the loss of the Sword, and the Ghost Samurai were all thrown to the wind side for Ashi. The resolution was also bad. After all these years we see Jack return to the past with nearly no effort at all thanks to saying "I love you." He kills Aku easily, then gets home and barely is shown with his family again despite the fact that the show has been building up to this for years, then rips off GL and ends. What a waste. What about all his friends in the future, whom have now ceased to exist because of the change in history (evident by Ashi).

>>32581777
It sucks that Jack only got 10 episodes to finish but it certainly didn't help how poorly they managed the time they got. Proper pacing would have gone a long way and I seriously believe removing Ashi would have helped significantly.

I started Super other day. It's fun.
I thought it was easier than Time/Darkness/Sky, but I'm stuck at the Gentle Slope Cave.
I don't like the pacing and the way recruit works, tho.
>>
>>32585146
Difficulty will pick up but if you use items it's stays alright. The recruit system is a mixed bag. It makes getting Pokemon more intuitive and fun, but lacks the RNG of missions. The break system will suck, your best bet is to just get a team of Pokemon you like so that when one is taking a break you can sub in others. Since everyone levels, even if they didn't go out you should still be able to use them well.

No, but if they're savvy enough, they'll probably think my "amnesia" is really a lie and that I'm actually human.
If I have my memories, probably try to pass myself off as a genius and slowly improve science and tech. If I know about the threat, especially the specifics, I would probably accelerate tech improvement if I feel it is required to give us an edge.
If I don't have my memories, I think I would be pretty useless at first. Hopefully I can get competitive and catch myself up with the others.
>>
>>32587284
In Gates, fuck no. Munna's cult wants me dead, so I'd have to stay hidden.

Regardless, I'd imagine it'd be much harder to fit into pokemon society than the games. You'd have to adjust to a new body for starters, and good luck with that if you're not bipedal. If the native pokemon know about humans coming here, they might get suspicious.

You have been chosen to become a pokemon, embark on the world of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and have lots of adventures!
And you get to choose which non-legendary, non-evolved pokemon you will become!
There is a restriction however! You must pick a pokemon that doesn't have hands or other kinds of limbs that allow easy manipulation of objects. And this restriction includes future evolved forms.

Choose wisely!

Claydol if telekinesis doesn't count as dexterity.
Otherwise I'd go with Scyther. Scyther shouldn't count against the choices because having blades for forearms is terrible in utility.

Honedge is great because you can stab shit.
Dewpider can swim, which may be helpful. Plus you get to become spiderbro.
Spinarak and Joltik can climb and shoot web.
Ferroseed is interesting because of defense and rolling.
Rotom shouldn't count, even though it can possess machines.

Spiritomb would be powerful, but I'm saying no because I don't like sharing rent with 107 other souls.

Boys, i think i've made a mistake. I just fainted in the temporial tower in PMD Time rs, and instead of turning of my DS to get to my last saving point, i just was paralyzed. So it took me to the next screen, and now i picked the option "wait for a friend", which was ignorant because i dont have wifi.

My other option is to "give up on mission", but im on the last mission in the game, so what will happen if i click that? Will i lose the game then?

Don't know but in BRT you could do a lot more damage than most sequels. Raise a pokemon like Zapdos to level 100, feed it a bunch of calcium or protein (probably calcium because special/physical split wasn't around) and then use Fly on a Sunkern or something and it will easily break the 999 damage limit (on screen) and show you the actual damage in text.

If you are you, then I have a few questions.

I'm brainstorming an idea for a PMD story. I have no plans to actually write it, but that doesn't mean I won't ever do it. I wondering what is the best way to organize ideas and write a summary.

So far I only have the basic gist of intro, the climax, and the ending. While the story is hypothetically convertable to game story, I know that it's pointless to, so I am just focusing on writing for a hypothetical fanficiton. I predict that the realistic best-case scenario this story is going to go is to just simply give it to someone I trust who wants it, but I'm going to greedily hold onto it for now.

The reason I've been brainstorming is because I have so many ideas flowing through my head that I want to pour them out onto text so I can get on with my thoughts.
So far I have organized them into characters, setting, scenario, plot, potential stumbling blocks, and a checklist. None of these are even halfway done, but I just started anyways. I've also marked sentences based on how much I want something to be in a story (for example, I am adamant about having a certain twist, but I am somewhat open to the idea of changing the properties of the twist, so I have the notes say how much I want things to be in).
>>
>>32604432
Truth be told, I never really did much formal planning for TUC (though I did a bit for Incarnation.) Some of this may be a bit 'do as I say not as I do' so bear with me.

I'll always have the main outline of the plot in mind, so I can have a fairly large degree of wiggle room if I come across a new or different idea that works better as I'm writing, while still keeping on track. I like to have the characters dictate the story, but there still has to be some kind of narrative and pacing. When writing chapters, I always think in detail for the current and upcoming chapter I'm writing. This helps me from getting stuck, since I'll always know what the next scene is. One of the problems I had with this, is that this approach is kind of a 'never look back' approach, so I occasionally have little inconsistencies here and there.

As for general ideas, think about how each idea and scenario fits with the characters and overall plot. Not every single scenario needs to push the plot on massively, but if not, then it should be to showcase something new about one of the main characters. I always think of the general purpose of the chapter, and think of possible scenarios that carry that purpose through. Example, with chapter 8 of Incarnation, the plot purpose was for Basil to be able to make a makeshift weapon. As a result, there were a few scenarios that achieved that, such as acquiring blasting powder and a braixen wand. I kept in mind ways to show things about Basil as he did them, such as Basil being rather unscrupulous about getting what he wants, and his ability to think his way out of problems if given a lot of time.

Kind of went off the planning topic, but I'd at the very least write down character traits to help keep characters on track. I had to rely on this for Incarnation (a bit too late might I add, I'll likely need to edit stuff to keep things in line) due to the increased amount of characters compared to TUC
>>
>>32604432
A side note about characters and species: I think of personality traits and story points for the characters way before the species. In fact, the species is one of the last things I decide on.

My choice in species involves something that doesn't break the story (Be careful with flying pokemon), and fits the character, but not TOO perfectly. If it fits too stereotypically, such has hotheads being fire type, nasty bastards being dark type and so on, it becomes cheesy.

Take Basil: I thought from the perspective of a pokemon that would have a very high learning curve when it comes to learning to fight as a pokemon if you were once a human. I figured that fighting types would have the shortest learning curve as people like me and you can still punch and kick while psychics would have the highest, given there's no human frame of reference for abilities like that.

One of the ideas behind Basil is that he'd be utterly pathetic as trying to use his abilities, as a human forced in the body of a psychic type would likely be, forcing him to think of other ways to protect himself from the dangers of the world, showing he's more of a thinker than a fighter. The choice of pokemon type fits this characteristic I'm aiming for. As for a specific species, I wanted something bipedal, physically pretty small and/or weak but something that does have great potential should Basil ever master his abilities. Narrowing everything down, I settled on Meowstic. Notably, I didn't settle on this until I had almost finished chapter 2 (doesn't become a pokemon until 4), and I'm not even much of a fan as meowstic as a pokemon. Just how my decision turned out.

It was a ramble and a half, but just thought I'd share my thought process and see if it gives you any ideas.
>>
>>32604576
The first thing I should note is that my story idea is not a retelling, but an original donut steel. TUC had the luxury of having the premise and characters already made, you just needed to develop the characters and lore more.

When I first thought of my premise, without giving away too much information, it was based on a combination of a what-if and my questions on a philosophy that doesn't have good answers from science yet. I also think that the idea is original, but I don't read much, so for all I know it could be a tired cliche.

I don't really care about whether or not my ideas get stolen. In fact, I would rather have them get a chance at being realized then to never see the light of day. My worry is spoiling things, because I do have quite a few twists. Not Critter Christmas-tier twisting, but there are a few.

I think I am apparently doing an overall "bottom up" approach, where I ask what I want in my story and try to see how I can fit the bricks together. I have concepts for character personalities, events that are unrelated to the main conflict (such as Drowzee at Mt. Bristle or the Expedition to Foggy Forest), the climax and ending, and a few other misc. spitballs.

Once I have my characters set in stone, I am going to make a list of rules for each character and a checklist based on the plot. The plot will have a checklist. The checklisted notes will also be labeled based on how much I want it to be in the story. I imagine that writing is about compromises and putting aside what doesn't work for the sake of quality, but I wouldn't know.
>>
>>32604696
Don't get too tied up about how original an idea is. It's all about execution. Sure, TUC is a glorified Explorers adaptation, but almost no PMD fics have a protagonist hate being a pokemon in the pokemon world, so I think it gets away with being an Explorers rehash since I'm offering something new there (and something good, since I like how Floyd turned out). In short, executing an idea well and/or taking an idea in a different direction solves all cliche problems, at least for me. I tend to be very forgiving towards cliches if I like them though, so take that with a pinch of salt.

Again, it usually doesn't matter exactly what the twist is, just as long as it's done well. Bear in mind one thing: If the pre-twist concept is really good, be careful about twisting it. The amnesia twist at the ending of Super is a prime example of this.

All of my stories are in first person, but if it's in third person or frequently changes point of view, be careful about it not jumping all over the place too much. Can't give you any specific advice for that.
>>
>>32604772
>If the pre-twist concept is really good, be careful about twisting it. The amnesia twist at the ending of Super is a prime example of this.
I don't get what's so good about that "pre-twist concept" at the end of Super. Did you just want it to be over like that? I don't think the ending actually ruined or changed anything that came before it.
>>
>>32604675
Species is one of the last things on my to-do list. I have a list of Pokemon I am NOT going to have as main characters (Riolu, Fennekin, Eevee, Charmander). I don't want to make the reader ugh with overused species, even if they are familiar and iconic. I am also making sure that the personalities aren't too stereotypical, but also not too unusual either. I REALLY want to avoid making my characters 1-dimensional, as well, because that is worse than making a strong stereotype. I choose species last because I don't want to center the personality around the species itself. Instead I want to choose a species that is relatively appropriate to the well-rounded personality.

So far I have made ideas for what protagonists I could have. To oversimplify them, I have a nerd, a diplomat, a mentor, a rebel, a former delinquent, a sport-lover, and a talker. They all sound like school stereotypes, but I don't predict a school setting in my story, and what I just gave you were oversimplifications of characters that have all sorts of routes of development, personality, and backstory.
I have to make sure that all of them synergize with one-another without being too similar, but have something that all of them have in common. They must at least have goals or achievements that are related to one-another. For example, one wants to become an archaeologist, another wants to become a chef, and another wants to become a biologist. Two of those careers involve exploring, but being a chef is not related to it. Cooking is not necessarily incompatible with exploring and in fact may be useful in it. The chef may have interests in exploring, or might be trying to discover new ingredients. Perhaps the chef wants to learn from others Pokemon on culinary arts. The chef will also have more things to talk about than just food, which goes back to making sure that my characters are NOT 1-dimensional.
>>
>>32604772
Execution is what I am most nervous about, which is why I don't really mind that much about my ideas being ripped-off. Then again, I haven't reached that bridge yet, so I am not going to deliberately set my ideas loose just yet.

My worry with cliches is that they will lose the reader. First impressions are very important, which means cliches in the beginning need to either be avoided for something better to adequately execute, or executed adequately.

Even though the premise is completely spoiler-free, I'm going to spoiler it anyways:
There is a human somewhere, as it is shown to the reader in the beginning that a human is being summoned. The mystery is that whoever that human is is unknown to the reader, and it isn't relevant at first until the main plot starts peeking over the horizon. That is where I intend the reader to start actively guessing as to which character is likely the human.

Definitely telling it in third-person.

I think he's talking about how it was previously established that you lost your memories fighting Nuzleaf and the Beheeyem. That's fair enough, Nuzleaf is a real piece of work who took advantage of your amnesia to break the spring barrier.
Then right at the end your partner just tells you that actually Mew erased your memories as part of the plan. It doesn't really make much sense and we already had a perfectly good explanation.
>>
>>32604786
>>32606530
That's the one

I really liked the Nuzleaf explanation, since it made the villains seem intelligent and thus more threatening. Really gave that 'oh shit, I just got played hard!' feeling.

Then we were told 'lol that didn't happen! Instead, you CHOSE to delete your memory because...reasons.
>>
>>32606751
>>32604847 (Me)

A little off-topic, but I can understand somewhat why you would have Gardevoir erased your memory in RT. It depends on what is actually suppressed, though. I don't believe that a pure heart is really needed much, but having memories wiped would reduce distracting worries and to get rid of irrelevant knowledge, to make room for more relevant knowledge and concerns. However, I would a least try to keep one's otherworldly knowledge from education, but then again the character may be too young to know much, and there is the chain of logic that suggests that the memory could be vulnerable to triggering and causing memory restoration.

How would you feel about a PMD story with an organized conspiracy, either from the good guys or the bad guys?
>>
>>32606883
Still think it'd be far easier if Gardevoir said "Ok, in about a months time, an asteroid is going to fuck our planet sideways, so if you just go tell Rayquaza to blast it, that'd be wonderful. Why don't I use telepathy to tell him myself?
Eh, reasons I guess." Rather than leaving you guessing until the asteroid is knocking on the planet's door.

Maybe they just knew something big and bad was going to happen, but they didn't know what it was exactly.

Summoning humans seem to be the go-to method of resolving crises, so are humans just really amazing or is introducing some foreign element the only way of overturning the world's fate?

Kecleon shops on the final floor of certain dungeons like Super Apple Forest or Golden Suite often have them. They're a bit expensive so you might want to steal them.
The shops in the towns can stock them too.

>Summoning humans seem to be the go-to method of resolving crises

This idea is somewhat attacked in Incarnation. It was based on a thought that I had about Gates: How many humans did Hydreigon indirectly kill? The whole 'sent back to their own world' seems like a bit of a death euphemism at times. Makes sense for Hydreigon to mass-summon them since 20 humans stand a better chance at stopping the Bittercold than one, but do the humans deserve to have their lives forcibly endangered to help solve a crisis that they had absolutely nothing to do with? It's kind of the trolley problem scenario.
>>
>>32606751
I see, that's a good point indeed.
>>
>>32608000
>>32607373

There was a problem that was important for me to solve: why are humans needed in the first place?

I do have a way of making the human relevant, but that still might make the reader go "Why does it have to work this way? Why not any other Pokemon?". The solution to that was that they didn't need the person to be human, he or she just needed to have a certain experience in a past life that is needed to make something happen.

The reason I insist on my story having a human because I want to make a scenario that experiments with the idea of (brainstorming spoilers) what would happen if someone got their memories back and ended up being a different person. There would be similarities between the two as to how personalities are shaped by and applied to one's environment..
>>
>>32608165
The human part is simple: As the human learns about the world, so does the player/reader. Helps make exposition less awkward, since a native should know most of this stuff. Someone to share the discovery with.

As for making sense within the story, it seemed to vary between game.

Only Gates required a human, and even then, the reasons were a little contrived. Native pokemon couldn't get close to the Bittercold without choking to death, but a human could resist that, hence humans were needed. Explorers just had a human walk into the story, and Super/RT, they were unneeded entirely

Incarnation will do something strange for it (Large Incarnation spoilers here from stuff I've yet to write) 2300 years ago, the natives found themselves unable to do anything meaningful against The Devourer, so they decided to try and summon a human to help them, since if they can help them achieved a civilized status, then perhaps they can also help them here. They summon an ancient Greek general who helped revolutionize warfare by taming and enlisting pokemon and through his insight, strategy and The Devourer being completely blindsided by having him summoned to help them, they were able to drive The Devourer off the planet.

This was rediscovered from the sunken continent where they ancient pokemon civilization lived back in the day a few years after TUC (the last chapter to be precise) So naturally, the idea of humans being world saviours had become all the rage and in some circles, they are now worshipped as gods. Essentially, humans are being summoned because they believe they are the answer to their problems, even if it isn't actually the case

Not Incarnation spoilers: I did that a bit with Floyd in TUC, but since he always remembered most of his life, he was still very much the same person. Life experiences can change people, so it'd be cool to see how different someone would be
>>
>>32608257
>RT, they were unneeded entirely.
Except that a large part of the plot revolves around the legend of a human-turned-pokemon. The entire thing is treated as a phenomenon. You could replace that with "squirtle with wings", and the story would run kind of the same, yes, but besides lacking variety of playthroughs in the games, that still lacks the motivation to go figure out why you're where you are.

Oi, I'm playing PMD explorers of time and dialga at the final tower is smashing me over and over again. I have no items, and lose all my items when i die. Me and my partner are both level 42. Even if i make it to dialga we just get one shotted and paralyzed by dialgas high IQ abilities.

Anyone have any tips?

I'm back.

Didn't read your spoilers on Incarnation.

The exploration on nature vs nurture is something that I wanted to play out. While I've already narrowed down what I've wanted, here are several that may or may not be a part of my story plan:
>how your body determines how you adapt to life. The human could be weak or strong, smart or dumb, charismatic or awkward, etc. As a Pokemon he/she is the opposite.

>facing trauma that has resurfaced Tthere's not going to be anything edgy like rape or torture! I ain't touching that!)

>a righteous human that did the wrong things for the right reasons. Shows how frightening virtuous delusion is and that zealotry is neither a virtue nor a sin, but a drive towards committing those things.

>a criminal with a hard life that now regrets doing those things; has no interest of going back at all to avoid his/her crimes

>a good person who was a victim of crime, but helped others anyway; now, ironically, a member of organized crime

Anyone can use these ideas if they wish. Don't worry about "stealing" anything.
>>
Which move should I have on Totodile? Water Pulse, Waterfall or Aqua Tail?

I'm on post-game so I can teach Water Pulse on him, but I'm thinking I could level up a bit more to get Hydro Pump.
>>
>>32611212
Water Pulse for range, then Hydro Pump for even more range.
>>
>>32611226

>>
>>32611103
Glad you're avoiding the rape trauma. It's so unbelievably cheap way to make drama in any fiction, even in original fiction that's often praised coughasongoficeandfirecough. Want to attract more sympathy? Rape victim!

I'd go even further and say that sexual stuff does't belong in PMD at all. Really, it's soft bestiality to me. I actually kind of broke this rule in Incarnation as a scene that gives the giant middle finger to PMD romance. An awkward comical scene, that was probably the hardest scene of all to write, even if it doesn't go beyond kissing. Matter of fact, I changed Basil's best friend to being his sister right before I started writing it to completely kill any romantic undertones I would have accidentally put in

While I don't like the idea of crossovers, the righteous guy would have been interesting to bounce off Floyd. Both self-righteous people who believe fully that they're doing the right thing, except one is for the end goal, and the other is following the rules. I remember a scene where Floyd ranted against these 'achieve my righteous goal at any cost' types, saying that most people don't know when they're evil or something like that, and thus everyone should bow to Dialga's rules to ensure they never slip into evil. One blinded by the bigger picture, while the other cannot see it at all.

Nature vs Nurture is a theme directed at two characters specifically in Incarnation, but will only really get brought up towards the last quarter,
>>
>>32611337
Didn't read spoiler.

Like I said, no shipping outside of established relationships such as mother and father. I have no interest in romance.

I wonder if anyone has ever written a PMD story where the protagonists are outlaws themselves. They can't be evil, but it would be interesting to see how a group of selfish and somewhat amoral bandits would fare with a savvy asset, a.k.a. a human. What causes them to participate in taking down a great evil? Is it because they have standards? Is it because they're hired by a resistance or guild to fight against the tyrant or threat? Or are they doing it because they don't want to become annihilated, get converted, or become oppressed?
I might be brainstorming about that. Or maybe I am not and this is just a train of thought that I've decided to post.
>>
>>32611295
Both is good. STABs are your best option most of the time so carrying multiple is fine.
>>
>>32611411
Depends on their role in the story really. The more assholish the protagonist, the riskier things get. Sure, it can pay off well and can be really interesting, but if the protagonist fails to be interesting, he/she can't fall back on being likeable, and if the main character is neither, then you're likely not going to get invested in them, which heavily cripples any story for me. While I regret not making Serge more interesting, he's reliably likeable in TUC which served as a safety net for when Floyd's dickishness got out of hand. Could be a fun idea, but should be one done with great care, and could use a nicer secondary protagonist to back them up.

For comparison, Basil's not exactly an outlaw, but his thought process when the law gets in his way is 'how can I get around this?' As for balancing likable and asshole traits, he's extremely loyal towards anyone he's friendly with, but tends to view everyone else as means to an end (though has his limits.)

If it's global annihilation, pretty much everyone on the planet would be invested in stopping that, regardless of how morally bankrupt they were. For assholes, they'll tend to look out for number one, so I can see them almost doing good as a side effect of their own aims. Example, an egomaniac being a hero for the attention and glamour, not for the actual heroism, or someone fighting tyranny because, like the good people, they value their own freedom to do as they please.

One more for tonight (from across the Atlantic)

PMD games don't have very advanced civilizations in their settings. I have read one incomplete story with an advanced civilization that includes colonies, Pokemon: Overthrown; and am currently reading one with an oppressive tyrant ruling over a country, Silver Resistance.

Overthrown was a gritty story that had corrupt authorities, stagnant government, war between the kingdom and the colonies, collateral damage, and the main characters having to trudge through all that shit that has already thrown their way of life through a loop. Maybe my tastes are bad, but I liked it.

The question for my story is how advanced do I want my civilization to be. My idea was to have my setting have areas that were stable and nice to be in, but also have areas that are full of crime and corruption. My group of characters have some sort of calling towards a certain career that is at least tangentially related to exploring. There is a city they all move to that has some sort of university that relies on the labor of explorers to help them gather information and objects of interest. This city is supposed to be a place of opportunity and innovation, but the prosperity of the city also attracts criminals, and many of those criminals have ties to other places infested with crime. If I wanted to make the setting even more stressful, I could have it where certain towns have become all but empty due to poor sustainability or bad climate. Perhaps those things could be related to the main plot.

That's all a bunch of scrapped or unused ideas mixed in with pieces of my brainstormed ideas. I want to keep things ambiguous for now. Who knows, though, maybe I'll incorporate it.

I'm getting tired. See you tomorrow and good luck!

So, different guy here. I took a look at most of the recommendations, and they all seem to be kinda... grim? It's all pain and darkness and death and hard mons making hard decisions. They weren't bad, I enjoyed a few, but are there any decently written fics with a lighter tone? I'm not looking for saccharine sweetness, just a story closer to the feeling of the games themselves. Danger and intrigue are fine, I'd just like a bit of adventure and fun along the way.

It'd be fun to see a main character whose reaction to getting dropped into an alien world and physically transformed be more like "holy crap, I basically have superpowers now!"
>>
>>32614683
I'm the guy you're replying to, but yes, that's kind of what I'm looking for.
I can, however, give you a recommendation, which I've already read:
https://m.fanfiction.net/s/7739127/1/Land-Skye-Living-a-Legend
I will never get tired of shilling for this one.
While it doesn't take place in the pokemon world, it has a lot of the "holy crap, I basically have superpowers now!", while not being overly giddy about it but rather curious. It's what I'd describe as a comfy adventure, without a lot of action, but with all of the exploration.
While the story is its strongest point, it's not the best written fic. I had to pick up a sinnoh map to figure out where the fuck we were and the crossover character with one of his other fics might not sit well with you (although the interactions were rather cute).
I just hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Well, I read through it. It's not bad, but I felt it pushed the "moral" of the story a bit too strongly. I guess this is just a case of differing viewpoints, but the story seemed more about a child being slowly broken down by the whims of an uncaring psychic god than a comfy adventure. Some of it was nice, and I really liked the parts where the protagonist was interacting with the local mon in a friendly manner, but every interaction with Mew gave me an impression of spite and arrogance. Kendel basically gives up on his life at the end, not because he'd become content with his new circumstances, but because he'd been beaten down painfully enough that he'd lost all hope. If not for the deus ex machina at the end with the shaymin, it'd be a total downer ending. The lesson he was supposed to learn was apparently "you're ungrateful, so you deserve suffering".

All that said, it did keep my attention the whole way through, and though I disagreed with the moral and the writing felt a bit stilted at times, I'd say this was worth reading.
>>
>>32611731
I'm rather drunk, so bare with me. I actually wrote a lot of my material while drunk, so take that how you will.

My pokemon civilizations depend on the individual civilization, though each is an imitation of a real life civilization to an extent. The two extremes are New Australia which was designed to feel like a Victorian era place mixed in with Australian influences, where they managed to industrialize to an extent. On the opposite end, Orkenen was mostly a failed attempt to make civilization, and at the time of Incarnation, they resemble more the Aztecs than they do the Norwegians which helped them make civilization. A lot of the civilizations take cues from the humans that helped found them, but have some unique quirks of their own.

As for other PMD fics, the only one I ever read through was Power Trip. I look at stuff like Silver Resistance and Broken Ideals and think 'Shit, 700k+ words? And I thought my story was bloated and needlessly long!" And thus ignore them. I did give Silver Resistance a try, but lost interest after the first few chapters, though it's partially because I was never overly fond of the freedom fighters vs oppressive regime stories in general. Just a personal taste thing.

The whole 'how advanced should they be?' came from the whole straw bed stuff. Such terrible bedding would surely be indicative of a backwards civilization, but I figured I could explore different levels with different continents. The degree of lawfulness vs every man for himself also varies, as New Australia was founded reformed, more precisely on borderline ancap principles, which naturally has its ups and downs, though it has very little tolerance for human criticism.
>>
>>32617008
Back again.

Unfortunately, I am not a drinker and am drug-free, so I don't know how that affects writing content.

I was thinking of making civilizations based on both natural and founded symbiotic relationships. For example, in my headcannon, Klinklang are a colony of metal organisms that harvest electrical energy and metal to create mechanical parts that they slowly adapted over generations to enhance their mineral-gathering abilities. Klinklang would fall under a socialist democracy operated by a quasi-hive mind, but they can still participate and contribute in civilizations that aren't socialist democracies such as serving a monarch, but they will still be a socialist-democracy within themselves. Klinklang colonies may also participate in civilizations that aren't mountain regions with excavating Pokemon, but Klinklang usually exist not only in those areas, but also with other civilians.
This isn't something I want to think too hard about, but I would imagine that there are Pokemon species that are seldom civilized. Apex predators might come to mind, or at least they would be ruthless raiders. There are also Pokemon that may have conflicts of interest. I must make sure to avoid or justify any weird friendly relationships.

I noticed that Floyd from your story and Jen from Victory Fire (which I recommend so far, need to catch up), the human-Pokemon are trying to use their bodies as if they were humans. That could be a subtle clue for anyone trying to find out if any Pokemon characters might be human. Or make it a red herring or a false red herring by having that character claim that they are injured. Maybe one could write a situation where they could've used their abilities to solve a problem, but didn't because they're incompetent. It is justified later on because that Pokmeon forgot they could do X. An adequate amount of amnesia might make learning how to be a Pokmeon easier, though.
>>
>>32617008
I have another thing that I want to say.

This concern sprang to mind recently.
I remember on /tg/ (best board) they were discussing what a Mary Sue was. Mary Sues are apparently not an uncommon pitfall in fanfictions. The definition is contested on, but the general idea with a Mary Sue is that the Mary Sue gives the impression to the reader that he or she is a plot warper.

My definition is:
>a character that seems to be favored by the author to the point of compromising the viewer's suspension of disbelief
>Is liked by all of the good characters in the story, but fails to gain the admiration of the reader

For me, it's ok to have a character that has no particular flaws and is a jack-of-all-trades, as long as they don't make the other characters feel redundant in the plot and is also likable to the reader. The reader can suspend disbelief is the character is liked and not boring, but if a "competent person" isn't entertaining and feels like a creator's pet, then the reader is going to be turned off by the character.
>>
>>32617427
>>32617483
While I didn't deny the existence of several pokemon, I explicitly ignored pokemon that seemed too man-made, such as voltorb. I figured I could have explained it, given enough time, but I thought that time and words were better spent pushing the story along.

Comparing Floyd and Jen (Presumably), Basil has a way worse time adapting to the new body, so much so that he ends up creating a weapon to fight with rather than his own abilities simply because he cannot use them effectively (Essentially, the RPG equivalent of an item caddy.) Really helped give the feeling of an outsider, using more human tactics to get around physical confrontation. One of the features I like about Incarnation so far, is that it helped Basil feel more like a former human in that regard compared to Floyd.

As for Mary Sues, I think worrying about them too much is worse than not worrying about them at all. According to those definitions, the Super partner counts as a Mary Sue for me, but you know what would have been worse? A partner with zero characteristics, or one that only had negative ones, yet not placed in an antagonistic role. It's why, even though Rey is a Mary Sue, she's still a better character than Jyn. If they're the main hero, then feel free to show WHY they're the main hero and not somebody else.

Two rules of thumb: Don't get too attached to any character (I feel as though by far the biggest fans of the Super partner were the writers themselves. David for the most recent Alien films regarding Ridley Scott for a non PMD example), and make sure the story and event reacts naturally to the character's actions. Just keep those things in mind, and you'll probably be fine.
>>
>>32617713
>While I didn't deny the existence of several pokemon, I explicitly ignored pokemon that seemed too man-made, such as voltorb. I figured I could have explained it, given enough time, but I thought that time and words were better spent pushing the story along.

I think that is what I'm going to do, too. I'm also going to keep the human's nationality, ethnicity, and maybe even universe up in the air. Gender and age I have ideas on, but I want the human to have some level of vagueness. Even if he or she is explicitly from Earth or the Pokemon world, everything irrelevant is going to be ignored.

What makes a human "human"? To me, a human is someone capable of abstract thinking, holds dreams, seeks community and acceptance, and capable of introspection. To a human, these things are natural and expected in behavior. To a Pokemon, these things are appropriated because of how rewarding they are to survival and living, but ultimately they don't replace their mind as a Pokemon.

My characters are still being selected and have yet to be fleshed out. I'm wondering if I should choose the human first, or find out which character fits the role of the human the most. I'm wondering if I should stick with personalities I know intimately and take bits of them and grow them into different personalities so I don't get attached to one particular character too much. Or should I try to find different character personalities I like and try to make them slightly original with my distinct writing (if I have any distinctness)?

What do you mean? Do you have counterexamples?
Ok, to be fair, I should probably bring examples:
>if a group removes someone from itself, that individual will either try to make him or herself feel better by pretending to not be interested, which may be used to cope with lack of acceptance, or try to appeal to get back into the group
>as far as I know, people may not necessarily need to belong to feel happy, but having people that accept you or your beliefs helps with one's psyche. Solidarity is usually a good thing from a rational perspective.
>People generally feel better when their views or actions are considered acceptable by society. Conversely, they feel worse when they aren't because they don't feel like they're world is further away from what it should be.
>>
>>32618174
Well, if someone had all of the other characteristics you listed but is able to live by his own with his own ideas, wouldn't you still consider him human? Or do you think this is so hard that he would be more than a human?

>>32618194
Humans can live without acceptance, but most of them feel that it is important in their life. There are always exceptions, though.
Maybe that is what makes humans human: exceptions, especially ones resulting from adaptability, although I think there are organisms that are somewhere around human-level adaptability.

Yeah, that's definitely one of my main gripes with the story as well. It being pretty long ago since I last read it, kind of forgot how forced the moral was.

>but the story seemed more about a child being slowly broken down by the whims of an uncaring psychic god than a comfy adventure.
I guess some parts are like that, but that's only the case with his interactions with Mew. I'm aware a huge part of the story revolves around that, but it isn't some huge "save the world" thing nor doesn't have many other characters involved other than Mew and Kendel himself, which makes the weight of this a lot lesser than with other stories.

Have you tried to write any one-offs?

I don't have any advice, but you could go to r/MysteryDungeon for advice if you can tolerate at least some parts of Reddit (though I don't really care).

While I have no plans for writing, I figured that if I can at least get my ideas down on something it will either somehow lead to writing or I can just let someone work with whichever ideas they like.

My plan is to brainstorm the basics, then write without pausing to think of the right words, just type what is on my mind. After making the chapter I'll edit it.

True, but there's a pretty big gap between 'unplayable' and 'perfectly playable'. Must've been a really, really outdated build then; or just some lucky break in compatibility.

Trying out SMD now, which doesn't even have an entry in Citra's list yet

>>32620188
>True, but there's a pretty big gap between 'unplayable' and 'perfectly playable'.
In the world of emulation, no there isn't, really. Depending on what, if something the game expects to be done isn't done (correctly), it might crash the game completely, even though all other things are being done fine. If just that little blocker is fixed, the game could start to function perfectly.
>>
>>32620274
That's sort of what I meant with a lucky break in compatibility, yeah. Regardless, it was a pretty fun game; if SMD also works fine, I'll have played every Mystery Dungeon game there is without owning a single physical Nintendo console beyond the original gameboy.
>>
>>32620296
Playing on the go is the best part of owning a portable console. I've never liked playing in emulators, as it just doesn't quite feel right. That said, I wouldn't buy it only for one game, but the 3DS has a pretty big and mostly pretty good library, so it's worth it imo, especially since you can get everything for free now if you're into that sort of thing.
>>
>>32618500
>it isn't some huge "save the world" thing
Now that you mention it, I really appreciated that. Sometimes it's nice to just see more personal challenges in pokemon stories instead of another world ending crisis. This is a gripe I have with the main games as well these days. I'm getting kind of tired of being the destined savior of mankind. I just want to be the champion and maybe beat up a criminal empire! The legendaries should be more like bonus quests.

Anyway, yeah, the parts without Mew in them were a lot more fun, and I kinda wish there more of them. I'd totally read a story about a human turned mon just gallivanting around discovering things.

It wasn't bad at all though, so thanks for the rec.
>>
>>32618676
C'mon you fuckin nerd, PMD is one of the easiest things to make fiction for on the planet. You could come up with fifteen different stories before you got the prose and narrative right, and that's just on one of the five continents. If it only needs to be a one-off, then do that, cuz believe me when I say that the biggun chapter books are a real pain in the ass. Only do those when you're doubly confident that you won't fuck it up and waste two years of your life when the thing you made in three months is obviously better in almost every way.

If you've never played any, Super's a good start on the 3DS. Gates to Infinity has poor gameplay despite its great story, so you might not want to play it first.

I notice that in the main games everyone is called by their species name. This is fine and all, and it's probably much simpler to memorize species names than to memorize names on top of them, but what if there are multiple Pokemon of the same species?
I was thinking that Pokemon in the vast majority of cultures call each other and themselves by their species name, but they have a first name that they are given to distinguish themselves from the others. In most cultures, wanting people to call you by your first name is considered unwarranted self-importance and snowflakey behavior. It isn't looked down upon if the species number is greater than one or two, and those who are especially revered are usually called by their first name, though that is because
Last names don't exist, since the species name kind of functions as one. Where they came from would also add the name.
For example, Serge would be Serge the Cyndaquil of Treasure Town. From most people, especially strangers, he is called Cyndaquil. Friends and people who respect him may call him Serge. In a group of multiple Cyndaquil, he is either called Serge or the Cyndaquil from Treasure Town.
I use this justification to help prevent readers from forgetting who the narrator is talking about. Main characters might be called by their first names by the narrator, but everyone else's first names are usually irrelevant.

This is a long shot but does anyone have a european wonder mail code for jirachi's challenge request in sky? I can't find it anywhere and the generator doesn't have star cave. Usually I don't like using wonder mail but it's taking forever to show up (yes I've done bidoof's wish and done suicune and raikou's requests)
>>
>>32623427
Super's good, and I'd recommend it. But I haven't played GTI, so I can't say if I recommend it or not.
>>
>>32623680
>>32623427
Super has overall the best gameplay, but I found Explorers to be a more pleasant experience because the story pacing doesn't go from 0 to 100. Start with either Explorers or Rescue Team. Gates to Infinity is pretty easy, but it also has better characters, but the text speed is unnecessarily slow.
>>
>>32623427
Rescue Team: Inferior to Sky in every way aside from tiny details here and there
Sky: Good gameplay and story
Gates: Best story, mediocre gameplay
Super: Best gameplay, mediocre story
>>
>>32623768
I varied things by continent in my story. Example, State Broussard and New Australia has more of an individualistic culture, thus everyone calls each other by names. However, Conviction (TUC continent finally decided on a name in the context of the story, haha) people generally call each other by species name unless they're family or close friends. It's not enforced, but you'll get strange looks if you call yourself by your birth name.

I remember there was a funny gag from a couple of NPCs in Sky when the teddiursa evolves into an ursaring, then they commented that they now have the same name.

On a side note, something I did with my writing is that I did it in 'album chunks.' Essentially, I pick an album that I enjoy and has music that fits the mood. Some examples (If this sort of music is your thing):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhidUmuWkyg for the dead future arc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJ-I0htgXYI for some of the more lighthearted segments
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44TzcehU0V8 for climaxy stuff.

Usually once the album ends, I stop writing. Essentially, it gets me to write in manageable doses while also getting me in the mood and mindset for the scenes I'm writing.

I find that Go For Broke always increased my damage by 1.5. It's worth it depending on the stats you have, but if you're in a room where certain Pokemon have one hit killer moves, you'd rather not risk it.
>>
>>32626056
Good to know. I get about 1.5x after two uses of Growth, so in terms of stat stages it might be +2 to all stats. That's pretty decent, though I think I'd rather stick to boosting than risk it.

Turns out this specific crash is somewhat exclusive to SMD, and happens on multiple instances during the game. It also happens to be the only remaining known issue with emulating SMD that I could find.

The 'official' workaround is to disable hardware rendering for all parts of the game where the crash occurs; which is like several dozen bits. It also slows the game down to about 1 FPS, making some cutscenes last up to two hours.

Thankfully, one Citra contributor let slip that there was a very easy workaround implemented in some builds, but since they have a (kinda odd) ban on discussing unofficial builds, he couldn't say more or link anything.

So I got the source code, tried the first workaround I could think of (commenting out the unreachable code assertion), compiled and tried again, and now it works fine!

There isn't even any slowdown in the parts where it used to crash, aside from the early water reflection scene, but there it only dropped to 8 FPS instead of the earlier 1. Overall very playable, and if the internet is to be believed, it should now be finishable as well.
>>
>>32628758
So you actually managed to get the emulator to run better?

Out of curiosity, what's your partner?
>>
>>32628806
Better is a strong word; all I did was disable an error message. A reasonable-sounding error message in the area that deals with the memory, so worst case the emulation will crash horribly later on.

I got Treecko as partner. Answered the questions mostly truthfully, and didn't re-pick; I'll see how it goes
>>
>>32628732
I'm pretty sure the Dojo doesn't actually make a day pass
>>
>>32628905
It changes the mission offerings and special offers. It TREATS it like a day has passed in except for not doing the "Time for dinner!" deal and sending you to bed
>>
>>32624642
Whenever I want to get new ideas, I just search up random Magic the Gathering cards for flavor text and art.

As for music, my tastes are limited, so I usually use PMD music if I am trying to get myself to think about something else, but I usually think best when I'm alone and things are silent. Most of the music I like is usually empowering, climatic, and defiant.
