This is the story of the duo's "meeting" and "promise".

Satoshi, a boy living in Masara Town, greeted the morning of his 10th birthday, the day he could become qualified to become a Pokémon Trainer. Satoshi's heart was filled with a desire for Pokémon he has never seen before and a world he has never seen before, but while he was meant to be given a Pokémon that would become his partner at the Okido Laboratories, he ended up severely oversleeping, and all that was left for him was a single Pikachu, a Pokémon that did not get attached to humans.
"Do you hate me? I like you!" Even though the two were at odds with one another, their friendship deepened little by little, and as they looked up at the legendary Pokémon Houou that flew through the sky on the day they set off, Satoshi and Pikachu swore an oath as they held one of its Rainbow Feathers:
"Let's go meet it together one day!"

And thus, Pikachu and Satoshi, who set off on his journey to become the world's greatest Pokémon Master, end up meeting the Trainers Makoto and Soji on their way before getting told a legend concerning Houou.
"Those who, guided by the Rainbow Feather, meet with Houou, shall become the Heroes of the Rainbow."
Satoshi and the others end up getting guided by Marshadow, a mysterious Pokémon that had been lurking in Satoshi's shadow without anyone realizing, and make their way to Mount Tensei, where Houou lives, but a strong opponent appears before them. Will the duo manage to reach Houou?! In order for them to fulfill the promise they swore on the day the departed, the two of them now begin an adventure that will last until they become "true partners"!

At least XY didn't have speedlines. XY battles had a way better dynamic and use of the environment. A lot more creative than what we've seen from SM so far (which isn't much). Compare Ash vs. Viola to Ash vs. Hala. vs. Viola just blows it out of the water. Pikachu vs Surskit alone was way more hype than anything we've gotten so far from SM.

I mean if you were to come up with receipts that show that I'm wrong I would understand but it seems like I'm in the right here. We have literally one official battle to go off of which is Ash vs. Hala and that battle was as shoddy and rushed as ever with Rowlet being a jokemon for half of its battle. The battles in SM are a lot more static, there is overall less movement and there is no use of creativity (Surskit ice skating on the field, Ash using Pikachu's tail, Ash using Surskit's ice beam to freeze those things hanging from the ceiling). I feel like I'm being fairly objective here.

What I find curious is that somehow Satoshi "lost" his battles against TopKek even though they never technically came to a conclusion either time. One time, TopKek literally paused midway through to go and tell him to activate his damned Z-Ring, and then it flew off once he had launched the Z-Move. The other time, it rescued him from falling off that cliff before flying away. Basically, the show wants us to believe he "lost" simply because, "the battle didn't finish and it didn't have him winning."

Movie story is not a reboot.
Satoshi and Pikachu are attacked like in the anime and wake up to find Hoou feather and Houou flying away. Marshadow is inside Satoshi's shadow when he awakens. The adventure is a dream based on the original series director's idea.
Once Satoshi finally reaches Houou, he and Pikachu will awaken and not remember what happened, with Marshadow fading back into the shadows. The movie will show flashbacks of everything we have seen upto Sun and moon. Sun and Moon Satoshi and Pikachu will remember when they first saw Houou and promise to meet it someday.
