I just started watching SM, so giving out my thoughts here and asking a couple of questions. Only two episode in so far.

Starting with things I liked. First of all, the animation. While I'm not a fan of cartoony characters designs, I really like the bright and vibrant look of the show, along with the animation that looks so energetic and full of life. It's just pleasing to look at. The second things I liked was casting choice for Mallow, Lana and Kiawe. Mallow and Lana's voices fit the characters perfectly. Especially loved Kiawe's voice. It not only fits him, but I just love Ishikawa Kaito's voice.

Onto things I wasn't a fan of. Lillie and Kukui's voice actors. Neither of those fit the characters, and their performance was lackluster. Especially Kukui's. I had never heard of the actor before, and I can see why. He's below average level. That said, I don't mind this too much. It's tolerable.

Now the main topic. Ash. My question is, does he change, even a bit? I did not like him. His character design has changed for the worse, especially the Z marks on his face. On top of that, he was acting pretty annoyingly. Always screaming when talking, having virtually no attention span, getting distracted by every little thing, sudden changes in tone, just getting in everyone's faces. He acted like not just a kid, but a really annoying kid. And I don't like that, personally.

I also disliked how he is already the center of everything. As soon as he enters, everyone stops whatever they're doing and focuses on him and him only. The character just met him and he yelled at them introducing himself, but they're acting like they're the best friends and only caring about him. Then Tapu Koko stalks him, already in love, and just hands him a Z-ring, something he shouldn't be getting. I don't like this. All in just the first episode.

I will continue to watch because I found the cast cute and visuals pleasing, and because it's Pokemon, but does Ash's behavior or his treatment change?

No, Mallow is currently the most likeable girl in SM.

Mallow has 1.5 focus episodes.
Lillie has 3 episodes.
Lana has 1.5 episodes.

Lana, as memed as it gets around here, is the "muh baroon!" girl. She really hasn't done anything beyond that. She has that yandere side to her which we get a glimpse of every now and then but beyond that she's not really a fun character.

Lillie is interesting, but her character is currently stuck in a rut of being "I can't touch Pokemon, but I like and can touch Shiron." We know that she's going to be developed pretty heavily later on, but until that starts to happen she's stuck being fairly boring.

Mallow has had a larger role it feels then the other two girls, but unlike the other two she has a sense of fun in her. She gets along well with Ash, she's energetic but we also see a jealous side and a more subdued side of her. But more importantly she has a sense of adventure which makes her character fun.

This is likely going to happen, but not dropped entirely but have them bumped down to a minor support role if Ash does go travelling through Alola for an arc or two. The Pokemon School acts as a hub for all of them to get together to hang out. Once that is taken away, likely by Summer vacation which sends off Ash to other islands, the cast will go their separate ways for a while to make their return episodes more hyped.

I've stood by the claim that the reason we've had all core trial captains introduced the way we have is because they wanted to do it differently then 1 off Gym Leaders. Have a full cast of developed main characters which gives more depth to the eventual trial Ash takes from them. Basically we're getting 4 BroBowls by having the whole cast introduced. So having them leave for a while before Ash challenges them makes sense.

Mallow actively seeks out and goes along with Ashs hijinks which makes her more active then the others. Inviting the class to her place to eat, going along with Ash to hunt the nectar, inviting him to watch her practice for the pancake race, taking Ash with her to keep an eye on Lillie.

Mallow is the most active girl.

Neither Lana nor Lillie have gone out of their way so far to be like, "Hey Ash, let's hang out for a bit."

I mean hell, it was Mallow in episode 20 who cut off Ashs chance to leave with Kaki and Sophocles.

There's also the fact that she isn't attracting Ultra Beasts. Her amnesia is also different from a normal Fallers. She has only lost a single memory, unlike the rest. The only other option that I can think of that could tie Lillie and a potential Aether arc in that deals with her memory loss is if Lillie saw something really fucking traumatic that wiped her memories of the event.

UB's destroying shit, Nebby blowing shit up and warping out of Aether and taking Lillie along by accident, watching the disposal of the failed Type Nulls.

I really feel like they're setting up Lillie to stumble across Nebby by accident or at Aether Paradise and to have her memory kick in like, "I don't know why, but I feel like I recognize you/have seen you before" but not having her completely understand why which would lead to her rescuing Nebby after seeing it experimented on.

Shirons role would be to help her save Nebby and actually fend off Aether goons until Ash and company arrived or Nebby decides to warp them out.

Lillie is the only one with ties to Aether and Skull, she will have a large role in it. Lusamine is with Aether and Gladion is with Skull. Lillie is the true heroine of the Gen 7 games, her popularity is massive.

The anime has never followed the games to a T, but I'm certain that Lillie is going to have a large role in the villian arc.

Nebby is likely going to be the Puni-chan of SM, being taken care of by Lillie like Puni-chan was by Bonnie.

Alola Vulpix is popular like Nebby.

They need to produce a fuckton of merch for Nebby from plush, to toys, to pencil boxes and cases, then have to meet the demand of it. Nebbys release is basically going to be a replica of AshGreninja and Puni-chan, the sheer amount of different kinds of merch is going to be insane.

They have to come up and prepare that all while making sure they have the supply to meet the inevitable demand of it all.

There's also the fact that there are more important Pokemon to shill right now, the starters and their evos, new regular Pokemon and such. For instance only just recently the final evolution of the starters got their plushies and they are some of the most important Pokemon to promote for any generation along with the box legendaries.

Then we'll have an announcement for a new game in however long and they'll start promoting that and the Pokemon involve in that. Then when we finally get around to the UB arc we'll have UB's, the box legendaries, and any "special" Pokemon like AshGreninja or Puni-chan to promote.
