What "stories" for fat fuck and Lana? There pretty much are none. We see Sophocles make his silly computer programs, one of which he used to help Ash, but what is fat fuck working towards? What are the obstacles he will face? Who are the main characters who will figure in his "subplot"? Same question goes for Mallow, though at least we know what sort of end goal she's working towards. Lillie's and Kiawe's are the only ones that we have a good sense of in terms of their subplot stories.

Right now, it's generous to even call what Lana's doing a subplot, even though Popplio has managed to make bigger balloons with time.

The last two episodes were good. There's no doubting that.

However, these big special episodes were about as good as a typical filler episode of XY. It doesn't make up for the majority of the other episodes of SM being lackluster.

XY was consistently good with a nice group od episodes that were amazing and only a couple that were a really big miss. SM, on the other hand, has been mostly misses and just mediocre with one or two gems thrown in like EP21.

The problem is simple.

21 episodes into SM, people are still waiting for something to convince them that the show is actually worth watching.

21 episodes into XY, people were already given that "something" within the first few episodes. Even as early as the very first episode.

SM isn't "terrible" or anything. It's just not that great either. It may be decent for whatever weird thing it's trying to do, but as a proper Pokemon series, it's just not as good as XY or even the other past series.

Heck, even going back to BW, it feels more like a proper series than SM despite it's many flaws. SM actually does a good job of making BW look better.

The main thing SM has been good for is pic related. But memes, constant slapstick and slice-of-life scenarios with only occasional engaging moments for people to get invested in just aren't enough to keep this cruise ship sailing.
