It's rather obvious the interest in each saga, besides the way Ash is handled and his team, is whoever the female characters/companion is. It's been like this ever since the end of the OS when we got new female leads for the first time. If you have a female character who has a great design and good development/story, it directly impacts the saga and makes it better.

My point was Iris specialized in dragon pokemon and for half of BW, Axew was her only dragon type. It never evolved because the writers treated it like the typical mascot pokemon of a gen.

Dragonite was clearly only rushed into Iris' team to make it look like she tamed an all powerful pokemon. There's a reason they didn't have her get it as a Dratini first and watch it evolve over the season.

To be honest, almost all games don't have much to work with.
May/Dawn had contests, but Game Contests dissapeared after Gen IV. Serena got really lucky with remake. If not ORAS, she would probably been as bad as SM girls with even shitter goal than Tripokalons.
And RBY, BW, SM games just don't have anything worthy of alternative goal. Maybe if DP remakes happen they will make Lillie/Lana competing in contest shit.
