I doubt that. If the writers decided to put popular pokemon on the cast that fans liked, then Ash would have had a Lucario in DP, he'd be capturing legendaries, he's get Tyranitar, Metagross, etc.

Weird thing is if Serena was introduced early in the anime and lasted longer than just 3 years, she probably would have had an insane fanatical following since to Misty just because of the kids who grew up with the OS.
