Continued from last thread. Iris is the best because:

1. No contest bullshit like May/Dawn/Serena, which was occasionally interesting but always less interesting than the stuff Misty and Iris did. More of a tomboy than everyone but Misty but still girly enough to be cute/not annoying

2. Honestly think she had the best design of a MC. Crazy hair was fun (Axew in the hair was a nice tough, and I also thought Axew was really cute, unlike many people, actually thought it was a great decision not to evolve it on the show).

3. She called him a kid maybe once an episode which was a little annoying but was usually done in jest, virtually every other character in BW had a quirk far more annoying (virtually everything Cilan said, evil TR, etc.) along with annoying habits most other characters have had. In terms of treating Ash like an annoying child, Misty and May were MUCH worse than her and Dawn wasn't really any better.

4. Best English VA by far.

Simple translation would be enough if this was a book or something maybe, but voice inflection is a big part of what defines the characters. There are good dubs that try to preserve that as best they can but Pokemon is definitely not one of them.

They don't preserve the music either, which really kills the mood for a lot of scenes.

Serena's Tripokalon arc would've been given more space so it didn't feel so rushed. Show how her rivals got their keys too.

Also Noivern barely battled before the league. He didn't battle at all before evolving too.

Related to that, I think Ash's depression arc could've been longer.

General theme is that a lot of the ideas they used in XYZ could've been given way more development if they had more time IMO.

Also XY didn't give us a Ash crossdressing episode. Biggest sin.

We could have had some of the things in XY that were forgotten about brought back and tied up. Things like Alexa and Clemont investigating to figure out who Blaziken Mask instead of him just blowing his identity by mistake, or Blaziken Mask teaming up with Sycamore for research, both of which were points that were raised and then forgotten. Or the Malamars who disappeared in XY54 and were never seen again. Or even some ninja wrapup shit with Sanpei.

Plus, more screentime and more action for certain mons that got neglected late in the series, particularly Sylveon and Noivern.

Thinking about the direction SM is going makes me sad. I'm actually enjoying the show itself just fine, but I'm becoming less and less confident they'll ever have another league (or any kind of arc ala battle frontier) where Ash brings back reserves. Each gen that passes makes it less likely because kids won't remember the earlier characters.

Its not fully there yet, but I think SM does in fact surpass XY(Z) in numerous ways.

SM falls below XY in terms of battles however and requires improvement in terms of pacing and plot. It also does not compare to XY in terms of Art style, but I have hopes that SM will start seeing improvements in art within the next 20-30 episodes and more over the course of the series.

If SM successfully pulls off a serious plot with Team Aether and Team Skull and manages to make Gladion a genuinely dangerous opponent for Ash while not making Ash job hardcore it could become feasibly better than XY, especially if the battles and pacing improve.
