I assume Hilda wasn't chosen simply because they had no goal from the games to use for her. Contests were gone in the Black/White games, they couldn't make her go for Gyms because Ash is the main character, so Hilda a main girl from the games would be pointless.

So they chose Iris and then got the idea to do an OS throwback with a similar dynamic and went from there.

Did Misty ever win a battle in Kanto outside of Psyduck's headaches? I'm honestly trying to think of some not counting TR blast-off's but I don't think there are any. In the princess festival she also used Ash's Pikachu/Bulbasaur and Brock's Vulpix instead of her own.

Then in Orange Islands I think her only trainer battle is against the girl in the Golduck episode. Then that's it until Johto, and she barely battles there either until she gets Poliwhirl and Corsola.

OS, AG and DP really did all feel connected like one long series that flowed from one to the next. Ash brought back older pokemon, old characters returned, and Ash continually grew as a trainer and character. However nowadays each saga like BW, XY and SM feel mostly standalone, they don't flow into each other well because Ash's character changes too much, and old characters rarely show up anymore.

I just watched the Sophocles episode.

I really don't get why you guys dislike it so much. So far it's probably my favorite episode because it's the only one that actually feels appropriate to the premise. It actually feels like what a laid back day in the Pokemon world would be like.

I found what Ash might do on a weekend where he's not on a journey pretty amusing, and there's some minor character bonding between Ash and Sophocles paralleled with Pikachu and Togedemaru working together. I also don't dislike Sophocles himself, I thought he was cute, especially how he was initially embarrassed by his love of food and he opened up once Ash got enthusiastic.

Not saying I want every episode to be like it, but I thought it was good for what it was.
