They're also not going to do a romance subplot each season just because "muh game patterns." Each game has its own unique protagonist anyway. The anime does not. Ash has been and still is the anime analogue to Red.

When you decide to draw up a character in a way that she's technically the "first girl" and have her say she'll be back for him, you can't just duplicate that and expect anyone to take it seriously. The writers may be lazy and recycle the same generic formula from season to season, but this is one of those things that is really darn hard to duplicate later on, unless you want to twist yourself into knots trying to explain the first one away.

But sure, whatever helps you sleep at night.

Who said anything about seeing a timeskip on screen? That's why Yajima did what he did. That way we don't have to go through that hassle and the show can continue business as usual. If Ash has to stay 10 on-screen, there's nothing wrong with saying that so and so will happen in the future and just leaving it at that.
