I finally got around to watching the Lillie episode without any interruptions so I could focus intently on it. Overall, not a bad episode but not a great one either. I like the fact that acting purely out of reflex/instinct helped her realize she needed to stop sperging out about touching the egg, but they ruined it by still having her sperg about non-egg Pokemon at the end.

Battle was okay, nothing special. First half of the episode is pretty dull, and showing Lillie fail at touching Pokemon over and over because they all kept moving was kind of dumb. Having Lusamine and Gladion confirmed is nice.

That's kind of part of the problem. Just making them classmates doesn't really make them useful. They just seem to be there for the sake of being there, except Kiawe. Lillie may also become more interesting but that probably won't happen until year two-ish. The rest of the main cast characters simply don't feel relevant or important so far. You can't just have them there for the sake of being there and expect it to be all right. I hope they begin to play more prominent roles soon.

To be fair the games don't give them much to work with. There's only island challenges and well...nothing else but post-game stuff like the Battle Tree which wouldn't be in the anime anyway. They didn't even bother bringing Contests back despite the fact that they could have copy/pasted the ones from ORAS in them.

The writers never really had much to work with outside of battles which Ash would do anyway like Gyms, Battle Frontier, tournaments, island challenges....or Contests which they did with 2.5 main girls...and well nothing else.

The only other thing I could think of is those Pokeathlons from HGSS, where you would have sports events with your pokemon. Then again its somewhat similar to the stuff performers already do. And there's already been various fillers in the series with stuff like this, not to mention all the Pokeringer flying competitions Ash entered with Swellow, Staraptor and Noibat.
