I am reasonably certain the director wanted to end the Pokemon anime with him and even tried to incorporate some of the features in the SM game into the anime so he can force GF executive's hands on the matter. Pokemon should've had a different protagonist each season, with previous protagonists growing older and only showing up when they do in the games (or somewhere similar enough), such as Ash in Mt. Silver or everyone in Gen 5's World Tournament. Perhaps also give each protagonist the current gen's pikaclone, and maybe even make a third game for each gen that follows the anime more closely

Outside of the gym battles, the characters were either incredibly underdeveloped, the plot was non-existent and made very little sense, the antagonist was pathetic, instead of working with the rivals already present in the first half, they had to resort to create, not one, but two more rivals, one that practically stole Ash's spotlight in almost every encounter, and let's not get into how many times TR was used, or how Tripokelon was a non-stop cock-sucking for their precious waifu Serena that ultimately ended up meaning absolutely nothing in the long run since she ran off to compete in Contests instead.

Man I really hope in late 2017 the SM anime goes through a major overhaul and they make it more like XY, even going back to the old art style. Since episodes are scripted 7-8 months before they air, that would likely give them enough time to view the initial reaction to SM and change things around.

1. Bonnie and Clemont got as good screentime and development as supporting characters without quests can get in this show. Far more than post-Kanto Misty/Brock or Iris/Cilan.

2. Tierno/Trevor were shit rivals only used because of the games. Its obvious Shota and later Alan were the main rivals of the saga, and they were handled well enough. Aside from Alan not losing in the end.

3. The villain arc was the best the anime ever did.

4. Serena character wise did develop a lot from the first year, even if you don't care for the tripokalon's themselves.

5. Most of the pokemon on the cast and fillers were enjoyable.

Except yes. In this thread, I've seen many people rank DP right after XY, and there's probably quite a few who liked XY better. I'm not saying either is perfect, but I think out of the series we've had so far, those two are easily the two most successful in terms of fulfilling the storyline they set out to do from the outset. OS was ruled by executive meddling that went from a 52 episode anime to that awful slog through Johto, AG was an improvement upon it but still had some missteps (like Ash lacking a rival for basically the entire series), and BW was more or less a regression from the success of DP. It's too early to say anything about SM, but it doesn't look bad so far.

Most of XY was viewed favorably on Bulbagarden, Serebii and tumblr from what I've seen. There's similar complains on all about Serena's slow start or the tripokalon's, Ash losing the league, etc...but overall most consider it one of the better arcs of the show.
