That's the problem though, Gladion and Lillie should've been the Player Characters of Gen 7(Both exist within the story, but the unchosen Gender had the worst end of the stick) with Customization options being there because you're trying to hide from your mother.

The ultimate point would be that you must face your fears after understand what it means to be strong and overcoming your "possessed", abusive, and controlling mother.
Then the Player would challenge(and Win) the Pokemon league as a symbol of their newfound strength.

You guys realize this game is made to be fully comprehensive for 10 year olds, right? None of the characters are well rounded or interesting. They're all painfully obvious tropes designed so that children with short attention spans can understand and remember them.

Don't get me wrong, I like Gladion because of how ridiculously dramatic he is, but I would never try to argue he's better than any other character OR a well rounded character in general.

Obviously you're welcome to read into/add as much to the content provided, but at the surface all that's given is a very simple story. A woman finds out about aliens, then gives up on her children because she thinks the aliens are more beautiful.

Lillie is a moe blob that "uguu has to get stronger and not depend on anyone anymore, uguu" and Gladion has to "Throw aside his dark and foreboding past in order to protect those who deserve the light".

Geeze, even Hau is just so unflappable and happy throughout the whole story, he might as well just have the words "Generic Comedic Relief" stamped on his forehead.

Don't get me wrong, I don't DISLIKE Sun and Moon's story or characters. I think they're decent for what they're supposed to be - simple, trope based characters that have extremely short, shallow character arcs to tell a simple story. The defenseless cute girl who wants to become strong and independent. This character archetype has been done a billion times already. Some characters did it better, others worse, but Lillie is completely generic. The fact that anyone tries to deny this just shows how ignorant they are towards storytelling in general.

I don't dislike Lilie but I recently got the game and /vp/ really did overhype her. She didn't turn out to be what I thought she was and now I feel like most people here just like her because she is female and possibly has feelings for the MC.

Hau, Olivia, and Gladion (and even Mallow despite how small her appearances were) all had a greater impact on me despite have far less scenes than her.

That being said she isn't all bad and I loved the the part where she stands up to her mother and the post E4 scene.

Lillie was shoved in your face to the point at which you could call her the main character even though she has less of a personality than a moldy slice of bread. You get out of a cutscene that mainly focused on her, play the game for about one minute and then you get thrown into another cutscene that focuses on her. Her design isn't special in any way either.

Most of the rivals have some kind of character arc. Blue, Silver, Gladion, N, Cheren, Bianca, Hugh, Wally, May/Brendan. The villains sometimes do as well, such as Maxie/Archie or Giovanni. Hell, even some of the gym leaders like Claire.

I really do love the Pokemon series but I really wish someone like Ai Yazawa (Nana) or Ikuhara (Utena) could take over the writing so that we could have more realistic female leads and female friendships. Playing as the female MC is disappointing because the game is clearly meant to appeal to heterosexual males (aside from the rain scene where they make it clear that girls can't love each other like that) instead of showing that boy and girls can be just friends or that sometimes strong friendship is a different kind of love.
