Just to wade in as handholding is something being brought up a lot as a negative of later games.

Handholding has been a trend throughout basically all AAA developed video games since about 2008. Don't blame pokemon games for the time they came out. Look past the handholding, look at the game as a whole, including all of the post game systems that are put in there for the more, for lack of a better word, "hardcore" pokemon audience that browses /vp/

gen 5 had a really nice UI, the little extra features like when the music changed on the gym leader's last pokémon were really neat too.

I like Porygon-Z and Magnezone, but I hate the eeveelutions and Togekiss doesn't fix much of what was awful about togetic aside from removing the legs and neck. Froslass and the rest I don't "hate" but they're rather forgettable and didn't really need to exist. They ended up "revitalising" some lines but just made the original even more obscure.

Sprites didn't make much difference to me, they just looked like different poses. Day and night are no huge selling point or hatred icon, it's a pretty minor feature I didn't even notice.
I fucking hated the starters, especially the fuck ugly monkey, god I hate monkeys. The Pokemon themselves contributed to the dull feeling especially the strangely pasty, plastic looking ones that couldn't really compare to the ones I saw before, except for the legends, Palkia was cool. The music was forgettable and I missed the water. The 3D models were fucking awful, especially when so much of the game was still sprites so it was an ugly fucking mishmash of both.

Honestly looking back now I can't remember why I played through the whole game, it pissed me off so much after 3.

Literally the only thing 5 has on 4 is reusable TMs and is otherwise inferior in every way. Region, pokemon, character designs, lore, story, postgame areas, battle facilities, music, rivals, gyms, champion, evil team leaders, even graphics. BW was basically such a step back from Platinum that it's almost unbelievable. B2W2 were better only for the fact that you could finally get non-garbage pokemon and the region was slightly less terrible, but they still only managed to reach the level of 'okay'.

Except I have. Gen 5's metagame was trash thanks to weather wars and genies being so prevalent above all else.
Gen 5's sprites were stretched, distorted, and warped almost beyond recognition.
Gen 5 started the trend of cutscenes every 5 seconds and now we have Sun and moon.
Gen 5 also marked the point in the series where the games stopped being about the protagonist and started being acout the protagonist's friends.
Gen 5 locked you out of 400 established Pokemon for no reason other than to be the "new" gen 1 and it failed miserably.
Gen 5 introduced so many new Pokemon they ended up rehashing older Pokemon, which defeats the purpose of locking the older Pokemon to postgame.
B/W have one of the worst postgames in the franchise, Black City and White Forest are jokes and the Kyurem town has nothing in it.
Hard mode is locked until AFTER you've beaten the game.
Gym leaders are forgettable and weak.
N is obnoxious and has an awful gimmick that makes him the easiest villain in the series.
The plot is obvious and cliche and that wouldn't be that bad of a thing if it wasn't shoved on you every few steps.
Musicals and Movies are one of the worst additions to the series bar none.
The UI of the bottom screen is the worst out of the DS family games and its a damn shame because Gen 4 nailed it in both DPPt and HGSS
The starters are generally considered to be the worst out of the series.
Hidden Abilities are a nice addition but the method of obtaining them is often ridiculous, which is poor design considering most Pokemon are worthless without their HA.
Seasons were a good addition but GF actually thought people would be playing the game for a year afterwards.
Unova is the shortest and most linear region yet.
Most routes in the game are straight lines.
The E4 must be defeated twice to become champion and their teams do not change between fights.

Gen 5 was garbage.

Gameplay is railroaded to hell.
Graphics in overworld are ugly mashes of models and sprites that were done seamlessly in Gen 4, and graphics in battle are ugly blurs of pixels.
Battles are pretty much the same but as I said, battle facilities are better in Platinum. Platinum is also harder except for challenge mode in B2W2, which was actually good.
There are like 20 good Unova pokemon.

And story/lore/characters actually do matter in a game like pokemon since they're watch you interact with in your playthrough, and all of these things were done better in Sinnoh. Unova tried to be better but it was forced and very badly written, which is worse than the less heavy but all passable writing and characterisation of Sinnoh. Basically Unova can suck my nuts.

As usual, all Pokemon games are and have always shit with so many flaws.
I have never play any gen before gen 3, so I can said it: gen 4 is better than gen 5. Gen 4 have more post-game as well as possibly allow you to get 445 out of 493 Pokemon that are available in DP. You even have HGSS to trade other Pokemon! Platinum is good game with so many updates, and I really enjoy to completing national pokedex.

That is why I hate the idea of making sequels: you can't understand the pointless story without play its prequels. I didn't want SM sequel, SM already suck, Pokemon Bank also suck anyway.
