I think it could be the first part of a two movie series. More of a remake than a retelling. Mew with its Z-Move might be a distribution mon too. Marshadow may be the only SM legend to get a movie during the years in which the SM anime is airing.

No, Japan fucking loves doing this for god-only knows what reason. One Piece, Madoka, Gurren Lagann, and several others had movies that were just a bunch of episodes of the anime re-animated with a higher budget and chopped down to fit into a movie (or two). This is probably going to be the entire first season chopped down into an hour and a half highlight reel and reanimated. If they're feeling particularly creative, they might even make some retcons, like working Ritchie into an earlier part of the story instead of having him pop up during the league.

You're half-right. Pokemon was still using hand-drawn keyframes ("Douga" is what they're called in Japan) until this season.

In Kanto and most of Johto, they'd take these douga and use them as a reference to paint the final animation onto an animation cell. When the switch to digital happened, they instead did the last step on computer software instead of physically having to paint the animation cells.

It probably made more sense in Japanese. The English games aren't all that consistent about names. For example, in the Japanese version, almost every generation has "Satoko" (Ash's genderswapped name) on the name list for girl players. The English games usually just pick a random girl name to replace it with.
