The Pokemon English dub has gone very downhill over the years, and suffers from inept vocal direction from directors who don't take their jobs seriously (Tom Wayland being the biggest example, also later turning out to be an alleged rapist before getting booted out), a script writer who has gone on record for saying his dialogue is funnier than the Japanese Version's and loves to shove dumb alliterations, rhymes, and slang into characters' mouths (Team Rocket are especially fucked over by this), along with awful music replacement scores that range from bland muffled crap (DP-BW dub music) to elevator and ballet crap (XY dub music).

The last time the dub was actually remotely likable was...AG, I think? James didn't have a head cold, in particular, in those days.

Honestly the only reason we got AshGreninja is because Gamefreak thought it would be a good idea to introduce MegaEvos but not give any Gen 6 Pokémon one. Which then proceeded to fuck with the "Ash can only catch Pokémon from new gen" rule.
This lead to the anime having to create something similar MegaEvolution the protagonist could use.
Also remember AshGreninja being "anime-only"?
I doubt GF liked the fact it got as popular as it did.
So here's hoping Gamefreak learned a lesson from the ordeal and will give new Pokémon stuff they introduce rather than just giving it to previous Gens.

Luckily any Pokémon can use Z-Moves so he got one from the start.
But don't be surprised if he loses it or gives it back to Tapu Koko at the end of SM.
I can gurantee the same would've happened if Ash did get a Mega Ring.

They could have given Ash Mega Charizard Y and the fans would have been 100% okay with that which is what everyone expected to happen in the first place.

To have a Charizard X VS Charizard Y battle between Alan and Ash. But Ash wasn't allowed a Mega Ring, so they needed to give him a power up or else he wouldn't have stood a chance against the likes of Trevor, Shota, Alan, or Diantha. AshGreninja also made it so they didn't have to do the "get rid of mega ring" reason at the end of the series. Greninja staying behind in Kalos was the logical conclusion to everything. But Ash just tossing aside his Mega Ring would have been a bad way of depowering him in Sun and Moon.

Ash had plenty of Pokemon he could have brought back to use as his Mega, AshGreninja was just a better way to have Ash depower at the end of XY without having him carry over a Key Stone at the end of the series.
