Eviolite wasn't a mistake.
The mistake was not fixing certain pokemon's stats after releasing eviolite.
They could have boosted the eviolite to make a lot of weaker mons usable if only they fixed porygon2 and shit.

What Eviolite ruined was future Pokemon design. See Gen 4 where they added a bunch of rad new evolutions for Pokemon like Tangela and Electabuzz? The Eviolite ended any hope of that happening again and probably a big reason why we only get Megas now. Alola forms are a great workaround in theory but underutilized and poorly done.

There's no justification for the evolution whatsoever. The only difference is that it breaks off the helmet and changes its size and color slightly. There's nothing about it that can be considered an evolution and everyone assumed, with good reason, that the helm being broken off would just be a form change and that there would be a story reason as to why it would break it off. They mention that trust would cause it to break it off, but what we end up with is a Pokemon with no story, that just shows up at some point missing its helmet and that is it. Made to be a beast killer? It never even fights one.
