There's literally thousands of different things to represent whether it be a person's interest, race, gender, or whatever. When people make characters they usually base them on things they're familiar with, which is quite often the kind of people they're surrounded by. I swear to god the first day Ilima was revealed there were like 10 posts at leasts that were the exact same "Are you male or female" "I'm a trial captain."

And when they were told that just because his description on the site doesn't use male pronouns doesn't mean he's not a guy, it does use male pronouns in other languages and Sophocles' description doesn't in english either, they'd go "Oh but those languages gender everything it doesn't count" and lo and behold when the final game released, Ilima was referred to as He.
