Serena is a gateway waifu of the worst kind. She's a bad character, a clusterfuck of story and characterization that isn't very well done by any aspect, but which attempts to compensate for her weaknesses by adding in excessive shipping faggotry and PERFORMANCES. I realize serious talk about the anime is generally unwelcome here, but I actually find the SM "main cast" or whatever you want to call them to be super forced at the moment. It really hit me when all 5 or so students followed Ash into the forest in the 2nd episode when he learned his Z-move. So many characters were in that scene and not one of them had any purpose for being there or added to it in any way.

They don't even seem to have personalities so far, the closest ones are Kiawe and Mallow, the rest are just gags and quirks. While XY is hardly a masterpiece in the grand scheme of things, I thought it had very strong intros for its characters where you immediately knew their personalities and what their role was within just that one hour-long premiere. The SM characters so far feel like excess baggage.
