More importantly, the theme of the show is discovering the world of pokemon through the eyes of a boy. original Ash embodied this perfectly, and they have to keep it because if he grows and changes as a character they can't advertise so effectively, and the theme becomes muddled. Regardless if it doesn't make any sense.

His original personality has also gotten completely lost, he's just an empty shell these days. Even in XY, why do you think people call him battle robot 9000? Because his fanboyish aspirations of being a master have completely taken over as the only aspect to his character other than just doing the right thing.

OS Ash could be selfish and stubborn. And he constantly struggled with his desire to care for pokemon and his desire to win the league. He puts the welfare of his team over winning or having the best composition or strategy and all that, which holds him back. All of that is gone in favor of the battle robot.

The worth of a human should not be reduced to battling pokemon.

They even have it as an episode title "the clash of ideals". N who wants to end cockfighting and free pokemon, Ash who is the ultimate tool of the league. yeah that always bothered me, in the anime they aren't really bound by the rules of the game so much, so the battles can be really clever, Pikachu's improv tail stand thing from the early OS comes to mind.

The TCG is based on magic, which has a lot of stacking effects and unique abilities that let you plan out and be clever also.
