Greninja is a hugely popular pokemon in Japan. Its the "Charizard" for todays kids. The writers know Ash's Greninja is one of his most popular pokemon, its almost certainly being set up to return when they want to advertise it again.

I gather that's also the main reason it wasn't dumped at Oak's like the others, they left it with Zygarde especially because its likely going to be brought back for an arc.

I think I'm feeling almost exactly the same anon. It's really sad it's over and the gang got separated(Bonnie's scenes and talk with Dedenne didn't help, it just made me feel more emotional). From the few episodes I saw, I already consider it the best season and, by far, the most emotional, sad departure. The kiss made me happy desu, but also made me want more of the shipping. I also felt a kind of regret for not having watched their adventures throughout these last 3 years.
The new season looks like it will be the opposite of what made this season so great. I seriously wouldn't have minded if the whole gang went to alola together. Thinking they will not have adventures together like those really makes me feel really nostalgic and sad.
