Starter, Staravia and Luxio are pretty boring as everyone picks those most of the time. Shellos and Togepi are pretty great, though, but why Ponyta? Flareon exists, Magmortar exists, Houndoom exists.

Infernape was a significantly more threatening mon in the gen 4 meta with its speed and sheer versatility.

It could effortlessly play the role of mixed attacker, Physical attacker, Special attacker and was also a great anti-lead.

In game it has the most varied move set between the three starters.

It's fine to hate nape but you don't need to be a complete retard about it.

I'm playing through Platinum right now too, I just beat Byron. Current team is Empoleon, Gliscor, Toxicroak, and Tangrowth. Retired Haunter and Kadabra, and am thinking about training Togepi.

Infernape was only the second time they did it though. Plus it's the best designed of the 4 fighter Fire starters, and I say this as someone whose favorite Pokemon is Blaziken.
