So anyway, what did /padt/ think of the latest episode? I thought it was just okay, sure there were feels at the beginning and at the end but there're things that were a little odd, what was the point of Xerosic abducting Clermont? It makes sense that Xerosic wanted to take revenge on him, but it felt kinda useless like they just wanted to have him not taking space in the episode, which is weird because it isn't like Bonnie and Serena did much either way(except from Serena feeling horrified when she though the truck ran over Greninja and grabbing Ash's hand when he was about to jump).

I like it.

Ash being able to master Z-Moves easily is a good glimpse of the future. We get right into the meat of the series by having Ash able to use them, likely by the end of the 2nd hour long special he'll have used it, and will likely set up him moving forward in the school.

The thing of note here is that the magazine says that Ash is leveling up. Not his Pokemon. Ash has always gotten his Pokemon stronger and stronger, and during XY we saw for the first time himself move forward in getting to be stronger.

If SM continues Ashs XY training, there is actually a chance that we could see XY Ash surpassed in skills. The fact that Ash pulls off a Z-Move right at the start of the series is proof that he is still a competent trainer.

Acting and looking goofy are no actual indicator of his current strength.

What we've seen in the preview is Ash going into battle multiple times with Pikachu and confident while doing so.

I really think, like XY, the 1st two episodes are really going to define this series. XY started on a high note like the series had never seen before.

We saw:

>The new fight animation style
>His heroics with Garchomp
>Bonnie and Clemont being introduced and having an impactful first meeting with Ash
>Team Rocket being competent
>Froakie capture

SM has a lot to live up to and the fanbase is worried especially after Ashs League performance. The best way to handle Ashs schooling would be to have him be an A+ student at battling and field exercises with Pokemon but low grades at academics and Pokemon theory like types, weaknesses and such.

That way we see both sides of Ash, the Trainer who placed 2nd in the toughest League to date and the Trainer who never learned about the text book information about Pokemon.

It's his new goofy look that makes it hard to take him seriously but as long as he retains what he learned in xy I'll be happy. I think ash is just acting more laid back now because he's not in alola to win the league like he was in Kalos. He came to Kalos with the mindset of getting better and winning,that's why we see him react like he does after his first loss againts viola. But now in alola he's not just there to better himself as a trainer but there's no real set goal in his mind so he's just being more laid back instead of serious like xy ash. He's still a kid so it's ok for him to be goofy as long as he still shows the same maturity for certain situations like xy ash.

The only reason I believe in a heroic Ash is for the scenes in the various previews where we see:

>Team Skull early on
>Ash running faster then Kawai and Lana through the forest which looks like the moments before he uses the Z-Move for the first time
>Ash and Kawai teaming up to fight, the moment where Pikachu runs down Ashs arm and jumps off
Ash is getting action early on, how far that goes though we just don't know.

IF there is a moment where he's protecting someone or getting Team Skull to leave then I could see the series being generally easy going but having plot sprinkled in here and there for a later time.

Lots of comedy anime have plots have an over arching story that don't really get touched in large doses. I think SM is going to be similar to it, comedy focused but with an underlying story to tell behind all that.

SM is more gag then SoL, because while the series is vastly different then previous Gens it is still a Pokemon series.

Ash has a goal of graduation so there will be development there until the end of the series or mid way through depending on when they want to have him graduate. By the end of SM I believe he'll have graduated. But they can't have 140 episodes of him behind a desk, Pokemon is about Ashs journey, not a SoL like Kirino Mosiac or Non Non Biyori.

With the addition of Team Skull, Aether Foundation likely as well, and the possibility of Ultra Beasts, SM is likely going to be a more light hearted version of XY.

I see the first 26 episodes being focused solely on the school hijinxs, then we'll start to see story brought up like Skull and Aether, maybe Lillie's fear of Pokemon will start getting big focus then.

Ash graduating doesn't really give a sense of fulfillment for this series. Excluding BW we've always seen him progress in skill and in the Leagues. If SM follows the games at all I could see at the end of Ashs first year or whatever at the school we see him turn 11 years old which makes him eligible for the Right of Passage. That way he uses what he has learned in school to overcome the trials, has a reason to go to each Island, and has real development like past sagas.

Graduating and completing what is essentially a path to manhood in the trials would be a great set up for Gen 8.

And lets not forget, we are going to get 3-4 movies in SM. Ash'll need to leave the school multiple times to take part in them to save the world like always.

There's one problem with this: you're implying that Ash gets to keep the stuff and experience he'll get in Alola.

I don't see Ash using Z-moves with his Pokemon post-Alola. Heck, the way they showed off Gigavolt Havoc suggests it might just be there to replace Thunderbolt in the "blast TR off again" department.

I honestly don't know how this might work. SM looks to have only the one Mythical (and Magearna already starred in a movie) and has only the two Legendaries...

...Unless you throw in the Ultra Beasts as movie antagonists, which would seriously wreck the storyline from the games as far as the anime's adaptations of the games' plot go.
