Its interesting the writers don't even want to make Pallet Town episodes anymore where Ash sees his old pokemon since XY only has 1 episode left. The beginning of Sun/Moon will likely just show Ash and Delia ready to leave the house.

If the writers are trying so hard to divorce the anime from continuity they might as well have ended Ash as a protagonist and started off fresh with a new main character

From the looks of things Serena leaves for Hoenn before Ash leaves to Kanto which leaves Ash, Clemont and Bonnie to kill some time which winds up with Ash and Clemont battling one final time.

Also, Serena finally gets to meet/speak with Delia over the phone.

I hope we get one last bowl of spaghetti, no matter how small.

The thing about Brock is that his time was wasted after and nearing the end of Johto. He stuck around to long which killed his character quite a bit.

He was good at times, but he was irrelevant for to long and contributed little to the show as it went on.

Clemont has shown extreme growth as a character since his first appearance and will end his time neatly it seems. Clemont as a character was much better handled then Brock. His relationship with Ash was much more endearing as well, when Brock and Ash really never shared much.

Brock just followed Ash, he never grew until the final few episodes of DP but by then his character had been sullied.

From an in-universe perspective I like Tobias better because it was so obvious he outclassed Ash, but Ash took on the challenge and did pretty well. Tobias made Ash look stronger than Alain made Ash look, if that makes sense.

From an outside perspective it was annoying that Tobias was so obviously shoehorned into the show to prevent Ash from winning though. I think there's no question that Alain's "objectively" a better character. He has a lot more development but he's also a huge bag of missed opportunities.

Honestly I don't get what's so hard about making another rival like Paul, by which I mean a trainer that challenges Ash both in battle and in training style/ideologically. The great thing about Paul was that both he and Ash got tons of character development out of their rivalry.

The Ash and Alain rivalry has lots of flashy battles but there's a lot less substance to it. They actually sort-of had an opportunity in there by making Alain become obsessed with just getting stronger (which he did for a little bit), but they didn't really cash in on it to develop Ash with it. I really thought we were going to get a Ash VS Alain battle during the Flare arc but Alain just switches sides immediately because Lysandre dropped all pretenses and just announced his evil plan.
