PSMD and Gates download: http://pastebin.com/kh7GcnYm

Check the guides at >>>/vg/hbg if you don't know how to install the game. You won't lose any online features or anything doing so, don't worry. You'll be able to do everything that you'd normally be able to and much more!

MD Exploration Pack, which contains a DS emulator and roms, Wiiware roms, and custom portraits: https://mega.nz/#F!gFlVkSLI!tXbyoO5rwfUYnb9jf7yVsQ

REMINDER: If you need a rescue, post your region. Due to a few things that make no sense, rescues are region locked. It's shitty, but be sure to mention if you're European or American.

Pretty much. While you could always just edit the moves manually, editing the values to give your mon movesets you want is also convenient, since you could easily relearn moves if you replace them by accident or something.

Yurop. If a pokemon you recruited dies during the same exploration it was recruited is it lost or was that just a thing in R/B?
>>
>>29168613
Basically, I used the PPMD tool from Project Pokèmon to unpack a copy of the ROM into a load of .xml files. I know where to find male and female Eevee data, and if I wanted, I could cut out the ability data entirely (or at least set it to null). Problem is, it's an address, and none of the other .xml files seem to have anything relevant.
>>
>>29174408
Region only matters if you're playing SMD.

As far as I know it's totally random. Sometimes you'll just see Munchlax walking through the square. You can't recruit it, but if you have an Apple he'll give you a Munch Belt, which just ups your offenses and makes you hungry quicker. Nothing happened when I talked to him because i had only a Huge Apple, or because I already had a Munch Belt (from Purity Forest)

Yup, and PMD was already ultra dark even before Dang It Ron Paul. With a little work, they could even do some of the merchandising they did for that series to PMD. Thing is, I just like bringing it up to waifu/husbando fans because it is a good Monkey Paw topic.

"You will get your love story, but Chunsoft knows they can get away with darker things since no reviewer actually beats the game. Are you sure you want them to do it?"

>Problem is, it's an address, and none of the other .xml files seem to have anything relevant.
An address? I'm confused, I thought you meant you were looking for the address of the code itself. I feel like I'm missing something here.

>>29168316
I was thinking that it wouldn't really be that surprising if the game actually could allow you to have more Pokémon than what the Connection Orb allows. Maybe the dialogue assigned to them is just an ID that you can actually edit, like the one you just found.

Basically, the ability data is a hex-code reference to a different place in the code. That other place (probably) can dictate how the ability works. I don't know where that other place is.
>>
>>29175872
I'd live in a place called PleasantBurgerstan
>>
>>29180459
Probably in the rom.
What's the "hex-code" you're talking about.
Is it a two-letter one like 0xFF or some shit, or is it longer?
If it's just a max of two letters/numbers, it's a single byte value that is used as an id for an address or data table or some shit somewhere. If you can't find a table that has all the code addresses associated with each ability id, then you're probably fucked.
If it's longer like 0xFFFF or 0xFFFFFF or some shit, then it probably refers to an address in the rom itself, and the code it's running is at that position in the rom.

I'm still not completely sure what you mean though. I also just read your post on Project Pokémon and it cleared things up a little I guess.
I don't think the ability's behaviour itself is stored with the scripts (I think that's only for story and dialogues? I might be wrong though) and I doubt there's a way to go from the ability ID to the address in the code of the game without a debugger

>the ability data is a hex-code reference to a different place in the code
How do you know this? I thought they were IDs, that's probably why I'm confused
>>
>>29181698
them being IDs means exactly that they point a different place in the code, even if the meaning is not exactly that, it essentially means the same.

The game actually does give you more slots/mons than what the Connection Orb allows, with the 3 Pelipper Island teammates and any helper mon you get from Streetpass and Wi-Fi. Not sure if it could actually work, but I was thinking that maybe it could be possible to write in mons with custom dialogue for partners due to the Wi-Fi helper system, and potentially make them permanent allies.

Anything but Rescue Team and Adventure Squad are fair game.
>>
>>29199893
>Anything but Rescue Team
The fugitive part and the legend were great and none of the later games tried to be better than that.

>>29199824
Meme answer is Explorers.
Good answers are RT, GtI and Super.
Probably the best answer is Sky special episodes.
>>
>>29199824
Some of Sky's special episodes for having slightly interesting characters, or Rescue Team solely because the fugitives plotpoint is the only thing remotely original. While having alright characters, Gates' plot is rather basic, and while the start of Super is rather promising, everything falls off a cliff afterwards.
PMD plots in general are only good by Pokemon standards, they're rather average otherwise. Chunsoft can do much better, especially since games like Dangan exist.

tiles, baby!
(grouping them into tile type mostly.)
this is going to be a pain to "automatically" arrange by hand after dungeon generation.
>>
>>29214728
>"automatically" arrange by hand after dungeon generation.
What? Are you talking about setting tiles to the proper shape to go with the surrounding tiles or something else? because if that's it, that's extremely easy.
>>
>>29214728
Quick question , instead of random generation within the game, could we also just make a bunch of maps with random spawn points?
>>
>>29215924
it's not that it's hard, it's just tedious - at least the way I pretend to solve it. that's what makes it painful.
>>29215950
i mean sure why not but it's not really done at all oficially, isn't it?
>>
>>29216006
How do you "pretend" to solve it?
Also if that other anon is talking about static floor maps, I think the Snes Shiren MD did that.
I read somewhere that it has a bunch of static maps for each area and when it loads a floor it just grabs on at random or something.

I was going to mention that you check out XCOM2's Plot and Parcel Generation. Instead of being 100% random, they have a few big maps (the plot) and then move two or three specific areas within them (the parcel). They have some YouTube videos explaining it, but if you've almost got it done, it's okay.
>>
>>29216098
I don't see why we wouldn't be able to.

as for the solution, tiles are one of three types
passable
solid
liquid (or lava or air or whatever)

and as far as I know, this means I can dungeon generate only thinking about these tile types then apply adjacency rules afterwards.

I give each one a prefix and add the adjacent tiles that are unlike the current type in a way that is has a grammar more or less like
> (p|s|w) u?d?l?r?
sort of, and check that against a lua hashed table
since updates are not every frame and maps aren't that big (no more than 100x100 anyway) speed is of no concern.

>>29216213
I've only just gotten started with grouping tiles.
>>
>>29216362
Of course the solution is tentative. I'm already finding gaps in the way I'm thinking about it lol
>>
>>29216362
Once you started talking about prefixes, you lost me. I've never used LOVE2d, so I don't know if that's something specific to that or some other programing technobabble I'm not familiar with.

Does your engine provide the ability for bit manipulation? When I check if a tile is a wall or floor or water, I just check a single bit associated with each type, and I have my tile ids sorted in a way to accommodate that system.
Any tile with the 5th bit set is a wall tile, and any without the 5th bit set, but with the 4th bit set is a fluid/air. if neither of those are set it's a floor or trap tile.
I also use bit manipulation in determining the tile's shape as well, but I won't go into that unless you want me to.
I don't know how your engine's tile system works, and you're tiles are also larger than mine, so you might need more variety for wall tiles and such, so this system may not work for you. I had to make my tile system from scratch.
>>
>>29216847
My bad, yeah it's very similar to setting bits, except with strings.

I was about to say that lua 5.1 doesn't support binary operators, but then again, Love2D uses LuaJIT, and I actually can't be certain it doesn't, because LuaJIT adds a bunch of extensions to the language.

Thanks for the idea, actually.
>>
>>29216944
If you can't do bit manipulation directly, you could always just check for ranges or something. With id's in a certain range, like 0-16 being floor tiles and so forth.
The function I use for determining the tiles shape could probably be easily modified to not use direct bit manipulation. Adding certain values can be the same as setting a certain bit.
I'm sure whatever system you're using will be fine though. You're not quite as limited as I am in what you can do and how much memory you can use, so you're probably fine with whatever it was you're planning on doing.
>>
>>29216362
Apparently Love2D supports tiles with properties, so you can just generate the floor, check adjacency and set the mobility stuff for each tile in properties.
>>
>>29217387
Well, it doesn't exactly handle tiles by default. Those are usually libraries, I think. Most of them use tiled, as well.

Tiled is pretty good, and could be used to map out premade rooms as well.
>>
>>29217703
It's true, I'm using it on other projects but with the way I've laid out map data so far you'd only have three tiles and you'd let the engine fill in the details. I mean, it's still usable, but what you'd map in it would not be 100% representative of what the engine would render.

Of course, this is only strictly speaking about dungeons. Nothing yet about the overworld outside of dungeons. Perhaps tiled would be much more useful there.

Anyone have any Meowth replays they're willing to share?

Kind of wish the dungeons were as hard as Sacred Ruins, but it's still a good way to learn how to beat Level 5 dungeons easily.

I was thinking of a more exhaustive approach, setting up the movement properties for every single tile (all ground tiles, all wall tiles, all water tiles, all lavas tiles and all air tiles), generate floors as a table with only the tile type then finally make the actual floor letting the adjacency algorithm change things as needed.
>>
>>29219077
Yeah, we're pretty much thinking the same, I think. If I understand you, your approach is allowing for more than one uh, "liquid" type. In my case, I'm assuming there's only one liquid type per map.

I'm going to start playing Super Mystery Dungeon, few questions:
1. How many dungeons are their?
2. How many endgame dungeons are their?(I.E Lugia's 99 floor dungeon in Red Rescue Team).
3. How much content is there?
4. How hard is i to recruit a Fennekin/Braixen/Delphox
>>
>>29219278
Per map yeah, but they still have different behavior like lava being safe for fire types and the various abilities/moves that can only be triggered on water tiles.

1. There's 126 dungeons. Can't really remember how many were used for the plot, and how many are endgame only.
3. The game's pretty restrictive until you reach the postgame, which shouldn't take too long. The postgame's when it starts to open up, but there's no real plot to it. You mostly just recruit members through the connection orb system and fight legendary bosses.
4. Postgame only, you talk to Fennekin and Braixen to recruit them, and Delphox is recruited by connecting with Skitty.

So, what emulator do you use? I've tried Desmume on my Chromebook (running Linux), but it regularly drops to 10 FPS and sounds like 10 kinds of crap. I'd guess there's just not enough RAM on this little machine. Got a better emulator, or is Desmume just the best of the worst?
>>
>>29220038
1 a bunch
2 I think there are only one or two 99 floor dungeons
3 They removed RNG missions for some reason, but if you go for 100% and do all the connection orb missons you can get about 100 hours out of it. I can't remember how many hours the story is.
4 If you don't pick it as your partner/MC then I think you have to wait until postgame before they are recruitable.
>>
>>29220494
Desmume is the only one I know of, so if you can't get it to run at a reasonable speed in that, you're fucked.
>>
>>29220494
I use no$gba.

Desmume ran fine for me for the most part but the audio would always slow down to like half speed whenever the screen faded to black. It was so distracting.

Wait
Their are no more random dungeons?
>>
>>29220928
>random dungeons
What are you talking about? Is that a Gates thing?
>>
>>29220971
>no more random dungeons
WELP
My interest in this game tanked. I'll sill play it, but that sucks.
>>
>>29220928
What? Are you talking about that Magnegate thing from gates? No, that was exclusive to GtI.
>>
>>29221089
Random dungeons, as in randomly generated layouts(or in some cases, seeded(I think)).
The earlier games had them. You'd think that Super Mystery Dungeon would as well, considering that it has a lot more potential.
>>
>>29221240
Oh, ok. Then yes. Super has that. Every game has that. That's kinda a main feature of Mystery dungeon.
>>
>>29221361
OK, then. I'm glad we got that cleared up, I apologize for my retardation.
