>post fanfics you like
>share your own fics, ask for advice, post story updates
>discuss writerly struggles with fellow writefriends

Join us in IRC at [ #vpwritethread on irc.rizon.net ] to discuss your fics, hang out and chat, and be frightened by the regulars!

Previous Thread: >>28928402

Check out the catalog for a directory of fics from fellow writefags,
>https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PtN4D_9CSw8JJ9uO6v0oQqdtKEkS8aFAvfxqI96XfSE/edit?usp=sharing

>Can I post NSFW fics?
Absolutely! There are no rules against NSFW text links.

>How should I post my fics?
Please, for the convenience of everyone involved, link to a host like Fanfiction.net, Pastebin or Google Docs rather than dumping your fics in text posts. This not only keeps the thread tidy (and keeps you from getting an infraction for spam), but it also provides a more permanent place to store your work.

>Can I add a fic I wrote to the catalog?
Sure! Check the catalog for the submission link. In there, you can find a link to a Google Form - fill out all the necessary information and it will be submitted for review automatically. Technology is incredible!

We're also looking to collect ideas for fanfics as a resource for stumped writers. Feel free to throw an idea out there; someone may choose to use it themselves!

You could take it out on that scifi PMD collab planning document.

Someone help me out here; what exactly triggers alerts for followers on FFN? I'm thinking of dropping a scene at the end of the most recent chapter, instead of putting it at the beginning of the one I'm currently writing. Will whatever readers I have be notified of it or should I put some sort of note at the beginning of the next?
>>
>>28975876
Not sure how it works exactly.
The last email about an update on your story is from 9/25.
The last time it was bumped to the top of my follow list was 10/2.
>>
>>28976061
The email was from my last chapter upload and the bump was from my last chapter update, then. Huh. I guess I'll just have to put a note at the top of the next chapter that the previous had been updated.

Fun fact: that chapter update bump gave me the most traffic I've ever had out of a single action on that story, and I didn't even add anything. Strange.

(thank you so much for reading along and tolerating when I keep restructuring this thing!)

So, odd question, I was kicking the idea of a Pokemon/Fallout setting mixup and I had the idea that stuff like FEV and Ghoulifying applied to not just humans, but mons as well, treating it as sort of a 'regional variant' thing.

Long story short, what secondary typing should Ghoulified Pokemon get? I mean all FEV-mons would basically become Fighting Types, especially overriding psychic typing.

But I'm not sure what type would connect to ghouls. Poison?
>>
>>28982330
>ghouls
ghost perhaps? I don't know much about Fallout, but if you're looking more for the toxic-waste ish infection, poison works too
>>
>>28982330
Poison as a typing sort of works, but it's kinda hard to express the sort of massive genetic mutation that ghoulification is. The primary visible trait a ghoul expresses is skin rotting off their bodies, the rest of the traits they can have are all pretty invisible unless they're glowing ones or feral.

Calling radiation poison could work I suppose. The Pokemon in question might not even adopt a new typing of they're standard ghouls. Maybe of they became glowing ones it'd be more applicable?

Your choice mate - it's your world you're drumming up.
>>
>>28982994
Yeah, it is a toxic waste infection, though ghost does sound interesting.

>>28983378
Hmmm, good points.

I actually considered ghoulified pokemon would have other traits than a new typing that defines them as ghouls.

With the ugly drawback that they lose their ability to be bred or evolve if they haven't already.

Guys, question. What do you think of the premise of a fictional where, hundreds of years in the future, after humans are extinct but pokemon are still around, there's a civilization of pokemon on top of Mt. Silver, all descended from Red's team.

>>28986165
Hm, it could work but his team is six mon so they'd have to have found mates there in the mountain. Also, what sort of cataclysmic event drove humanity to extinction but not Pokemon? We're a rather stubborn species.
>>
>>28986371

Well as for mates, I think most of his team were within the same egg group. I'd need to double-check though.

And as for the event, I was thinking something like some kind of human made weapon with infinity energy. Maybe some legendaries found out about it and decided to get rid of the humans due to their threat on the environment... maybe just a mass extinction event that didn't affect the pokemon due to their remote location, almost like a natural Fallout vault.

I'll need to think about it more.

Poison seems like a fitting idea, but it might also be interesting to say they gain a new, undiscovered kind of type to represent the radiation and make it distinct from ordinary poison. Kind of like the Nuclear type from that fangame Uranium. That said, if inventing a new type sounds like a bad idea, Poison could definitely remain an option.

>>28990228
Not too bad. The last few days were super busy for me, but today I finally got some free time to work on putting the finishing touches on the start of a new story of mine. Is the pokemon world literally just earth copy+pasted

>>
>>29005959
Not exactly, but geographic regions are heavily connected to Earth's and if the kanto-johto-hoenn-sinnoh relationship is any indicator, the political connections are also similar

On the other hand the devs have explicitly said it's not earth so
>>
>>29005959
Lt. Surge has been American since 1995. This isn't exactly breaking news. Besides, it makes our jobs a lot easier because we can generally infer geographic and political relations based on IRL knowledge instead of having to outright make up throwaway worldbuilding flavor info and remember not to contradict it later.

After almost a month of nothing new, I've finally gotten my rear back in gear and started a new story: "Outcast of Comb Island". Unlike my other two stories, it's not a PMD fic, but rather an ordinary Pokémon story. It's also vaguely based off some request an anon made a while ago about a Combee being pampered by its trainer, but it doesn't really follow the request too closely. It's still about a Combee and what happens when she gets caught, but ideas bred like rabbits and led me to try expanding on the initial idea.

If you want to check it out, here is a link to the prologue:

i'm still only familiar with the basics of how radioactive reactions/nuclear plants work but I'd consider both of these to be fair picks for supereffective elements:

Water- thermalizes neutrons which minimizes the odds of them causing a fission reaction with U-258, which naturally stops the vast majority of radiation from being emitted. This is not how this works in reality due to nuclear fuel used in civilian plants being partially enriched but I assume any theoretical "Uranium" Pokemon would not have gone through the complicated/expensive enrichment process
Steel- represents high density elements like lead/steel that are extremely good at reducing photon flux/the amount of radiation energy that leaks out

i'd also suggest that bug types should be resistant simply because insects in real life are highly resistant to radiation (http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2011/04/why-cockroaches-and-insects-are-resistant-to-radiation/). Ghost types maybe as well because I tend to view them as already having a highly energized/unstable atomic structure that probably would not be very affected by external energy sources

Looking at Uranium's wiki, it seems like Nuclear is super effective against everything except itself and Steel, which resist it. Which, honestly, seems just a bit OP. I guess the idea in that game was to make it some OP godmode type, though, but if we're re-imagining it as an ordinary type, then how about pic related as the new type chart.

In terms of offense: it is resisted by itself, Steel, and Bug (since some metal blocks certain radiation, and some bugs resist rads IRL). But Normal and Grass are weak to it (since they best represent organic animals and plants, which are very negatively affected by radiation), and Fairy is weak to it too (in the same vein of Fairy's weakness to Poison).

In terms of defense: Steel and Ground are super-effective against it (since metal containers and underground burial are methods of containing radiation). Nuclear, Normal, and Grass are not very effective against Nuclear. It resists Poison too (since it's pretty much poison already and wouldn't be too badly affected by other poison-based attacks).

Now, I have no idea whether that's a balanced or logical type chart, but hopefully it's not complete rubbish.

Looking through today's updated Pokemon fics I found one about a Pokemon trainer trying to survive being dumped in North Korea and another with a Starship Troopers-esque setup with futuristic space soldiers trying to fight off an army of Psychic-type rapemons on an alien planet. One I thought actually looked promising was about a girl who transforms into a Mew under circumstances unknown and is dumped in the middle of nowhere only to be immediately jumped on by trainers. She escapes, but find that Pokemon seem to be attracted to her no matter how much of a jerk she is to them in return. https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12180441/1/Outer-Body We'll see if it remains promising.

>>29023127

As someone who managed to beat Uranium- Nuclear Pokemon are craptastic in single player because you can't get them to obey you reliably until the very end of the game and they're craptastic in multiplayer battles because 1. Nuclear attack base damage is gutted compared to other types, meaning they have a hard time knocking out bulky Pokemon even when they hit super effectively, and 2. practically every Nuclear Pokemon gets steamrolled by any priority move or sweeper with decent speed. The final battles are a bit of a joke really because even though the big bad has a team of powerful Nuclear-types at her disposal you're likely to OHKO all of them with your starter's basic elemental attack.

I do agree though that designing a type to be so horribly lopsided towards offense was a poor balancing decision, however, and hope that anyone who invents a new type for a fanfiction tries to make it more than a one dimensional glass cannon.

Floating sleeves, great confusion, but ultimately depends on why there is a Mienshao in space. I'm not a writer so take this this with a grain of salt but I liked it, it was well written I didn't see any noticeable grammar problem the pacing looks good and the characters are enjoyable. I really like the combee's ranking system thing it really fits with the species. The only thing that confused me was that the main guy said he didn't want to keep her for long even though a lone female combee was rare, I know this will change further on but still its kind of weird for a poke researcher to say that in my opinion. Anyway I really enjoyed it and I can't wait to see the next parts.
If your looking for a "proper" nickname for the combee maybe something like beebe or vespy? I'm not good with nicknames sorry.

Thanks for reading it; I'm glad you liked it.

About his intention to release her, the idea was that keeping her and taking her away from the island might disrupt the ecosystem, since removing a female would make the female population even more scarce than it already is. So for now, he's planning to release her in the end, but that might change depending on how I decide to make the plot go. Either way, I'm going to edit that chapter a bit now and add in a line or two in the tavern scene so it's more clear why he's currently planning to release her in the end.

And don't feel bad, I'm bad at nicknames too. Unless something better comes to mind, I'm thinking about just keeping it as CIS4 or turning it into leetspeak and calling her Cisa.

As I have learned, most worldbuilding belongs in separate documents that will never see the light of day in your actual story. But if there is ever need of extremely detailed background information, it's there for you to draw from. Writing about a country's children getting fucked over by a cultural revolution has taught me that you can never have too big of a universe bible.

I love worldbuilding too, but the problem is I like doing it more than writing the actual stories, because worldbuilding means I don't have to write all the little specific details that link the ideas together. When it comes to writing stories that require me to tie all my ideas together logically, it just feels tedious.
It's the number-one threat to my productivity.

Is it a normal thing to make break one-shots in the middle of larger multi-chaptered fics? I almost feel like that's a thing I need to do so that MoM is interesting to write again. Having to very carefully watch the telling details of every scene I write is very tiring.
>>
>>29054719
>Is it a normal thing to make break one-shots in the middle of larger multi-chaptered fics?
That's how I wrote all of BStF until very recently, and I think taking those requests definitely helped my output

Pros: Keeps the creative juices flowing even during writing slumps.
Cons: Consumes mental effort that could be put to the main project.

Honestly the only reason I stopped was that after considerably tightening up BStF, I find I have to devote a lot more thought to its execution. I'm not too bothered, since it results in a better project. As long as I push out words every night.

On that note, I'm done pushing out words tonight. Sleep beckons

>>
>>29055538
>cge expressed contempt
That's a round-the-clock activity for me.

>writing requests
Largely because most of what is asked for here is smut Ad-Libs, so narrow that only one person can/should reasonably fulfill it. Contrast to a prompt; one good prompt and a few parameters could generate a half dozen proper stories were one to be advanced and were the fish willing to bite. There have been a few times when proposed ideas caught my attention such that I mentioned that fact, but the last prompt I responded to from this thread was a damned typo.

>>29055538
>would you be open to commissions instead?
If by "you" you mean [cge], I'm far too sporadic in my writing phases to market it as a service: That WIP from last year I mentioned? still idle. Also, were I to make my writing a compensated effort, I would probably price myself of the market on the typing alone.

>>
>>29054719
I'm not sure what's considered normal exactly, but I can say that I've taken such breaks myself. In fact, all of the stories I've done so far have been made following cases of burnout from this one big story I've been trying to write, which led me to put it on hold and start on something new so I didn't stagnate. That said, each of those stories quickly spiraled out of control and became multi-chapter works themselves, but still, working on smaller stories seems to help me get back in the swing of things personally.

So I believe taking breaks can definitely be beneficial if the current big project becomes tedious, just so long as the main project doesn't get abandoned as a result.

95.An underground worker from Sinnoh is hired to excavate an undiscovered portion of Reflection Cave in the Kalos region. He's not sure why he's hired, because every cave he's hired for collapses for good. While excavating, he accidentally hits a certain pink stone (with his pickaxe) surrounded by blue carbon crystals. Upon hearing a cry (moan?) from hitting the stone a few times, the blue carbon stones reveal themselves as Carbink and attack the worker, who is now running for his life back to the surface. Little did he know that his pickaxe still holds on to the pink stone up to the surface, where it is revealed that she is a legendary named Dianche. At first she fell in love with the pickaxe for doing such a "bold" thing to her, but overtime, she discovers that the wielder is the one that hit her, and her love shifts to the unfortunate spelunker. Carbink from different caves awaken to attack the spelunker through each other job, not knowing why his luck seems to be worse with this pokemon following him. Dianche then reveals that she is actually a princess of gemstones, and take him back to the Reflecting Cave to reveal that she will marry him. Although the Carbink attack stops, he now has to deal with "taking responsibility" for "mining her treasure." Maybe make it cute at first and then shift to romantic afterwards.

Okay, so, I've had this idea for the longest time about a fanfic (Or, in my head, a Netflix series, but HAHA, I know that's not going to happen) involving Zinnia and Steven Stone traveling around the world.

A man in a Hoopa getup with a strange stone tries and nearly succeeds in killing Zinnia, until she's saved by Steven (Even though his opinion on her isn't all that great, an attempted murder is still an attempted murder) After chasing off the guy off, he drops the stone. After a few weeks of recovery on Zinnia's part, and Steven studying the strange stone, not finding any matches to anything he's ever seen, the two decide to embark on a journey across the world, trying to find everything they can about both the stone and the strange man.

Said journey involves them traveling all across several different regions, such as Johto, Sinnoh, Unova, and even Orre. The guy in the Hoopa getup is technically a canon character, but I say technically because Multiverse. Other Hoenn characters will definitely make appearances, like Team Aqua and Magma. Brendan and May will probably be name dropped every now and then. Mayor may not make an appearance. Of course, characters like Cynthia, Lance and Clair will appear (Have plans for Zinnia to just straight up suplex Clair) but the three main characters will be Steven, Zinnia and Hoopa villain dude.

While I'm curious to know if anyone would be interested in this story, what I'd really like are a couple of scenario ideas. Things that people would like to see in this kind of story. They don't have to be purely comical, (Although, having ideas like Steven fall in love with Sinnoh's Underground to the point where Zinnia literally has to drag him out would be hilarious) they can be challenging to the characters, such as Steven calling out Zinnia on her plans to use Groudon and Kyogre to summon Rayqayza.
>>
>>29065156
I think after being force-fed a slice of humble pie and some time to get the fuck over herself, Zinnia could be a compelling character, so I say go for it. If you think you can rehabilitate her with all the hate she gets, all power to you.

You have an opportunity to give the two the opportunity to jockey with each other over philosophy, as they both follow different approaches to how things should be handed - Steven leaning on pragmatism and Zinnia on intuition. That can manifest in a variety of contexts, from how they deal with minor villains they happen across, how they solve problems that manifest with their journey, and how they manage their time doing research as they move from town to town.

For that though, you'd need a reason for them not to always be splitting up and saying, "Well I'll go to ____ and you'll go to ____ and then we'll just discuss what we found," because that would get stale.

How this villain gets dealt with also becomes a point of their debates, as I'd imagine that they both would have differnet ideas about how they're going to deal with this guy once they finally find him.

This all has the effect of creating a space where both sides of the argument are presented and deliberated on, and you can tailor the work to suit whatever philosophy you feel is right - or set the work to never provide a "correct" approach, only different manners thereof.

'Course, if none of that really floats your boat or is what you had in mind, I wouldn't say no to tried and true opposites-attract romance.
>>
>>29065220
Part of the reason why Zinnia acted all high and mighty in the Delta Episode is because she did kinda know everything that was going on. A large majority of it is because that's kinda her job to know all this stuff about Hoenn and Rayqayza and the like. Obviously, as she gets out into the world, she'll have no clue about the Tao trio or the Creation trio stuff, so she can't act like she knows everything, because she doesn't.
>>
>>29065415
I think that's a little charitable. While accurate, her personality seems to be that of a zealot; less important of the fact she was right was how totally convinced she was of it, something which came across very clearly in ΔEp. She has a belligerent approach when confronted with opposing viewpoints, rather than trying to talk it out. She has an inflated sense of her importance (likely due to her position and upbringing) and tries to take charge wherever she is. She will justify any act to bring about her ultimate goal.

This all sorta plays into a headstrong/zealot archtype that, should you dispose of, would fundamentally break her character. This is a FANTASTIC foil to Steven's deliberate and modest approach, taking his time to go over options and selecting based on practicality, and her stubbornness would clash with his stoic resolution wonderfully. I think that was the point of Traipsing's post; that the crux or the story would be these two extremely different personalities having to get along to work towards a common goal.

And of course, along the way you have each character's personal baggage, like Steven's duties as (ex-)Champion and his father's business, alongside Zinnia's heritage and past tragedy. Neither seem the type to go on at length about personal problems, but opportunities will arise in a well-crafted story to address them.

>>29065415
>Obviously, as she gets out into the world, she'll have no clue about the Tao trio or the Creation trio stuff, so she can't act like she knows everything, because she doesn't.
The first part is correct. The second part I doubt will stop her. She'll definitely be interested in the lore, but if it ever becomes time to act, she WILL form a battle-plan based on her gut feelings of the situation and apply herself completely to pursuing it, where Steven is more likely to stop and wait to get more info and contemplate the problem. Sometimes one approach will be better than the other, other times the opposite.
>>
>>29065402
Ooh, Differing Philosophies dueling against each other. I did not think of that. I like it. I was going to go with a sort of Opposites attract sort of thing, but not really as a romance, more as a friendship. It might end up as a romance depending on how it's all written out.

One thing you mention is about how they'd both go about with the villain, and that's something I should bring up. Because Zinnia actually does have somewhat of a personal relationship with him. How personal really depends on how I plan to play it out. Because the thought of"Oh, what if this guy is actually the original Aster's father?" Came to me, and I know that's kinda not canon. But it's one of those things I'm debating in my head if I wanna go down that path, because even if that's not the case, Zinnia still had a past with him.

Another thing to mention is Cipher, because they play a role in the story as well.Steven probably would want to bring them to the jail, and let the legal system handle a lot of it, meanwhile Zinnia would probably want to bring a more personal brand of justice because of what she's seen him do. Kinda like a whole Daredevil and Punisher sort of thing.
>>
>>29065653
You hit the nail on the head. Back in very, very early stages of this idea, from what I can recall, Steven wasn't really there. Obviously, it would've just been a whole lot of Zinnia flying around from region to region, just kind of interacting with the characters of said region. With Steven, a lot more is added. They're both fantastic foils to one another, down to their very core. One of the reasons why I love a lot of Metaldragon artwork is because so much of it involves these two opposing one another.

On the last part, I suppose I should've said something along those lines, yes. Zinnia would probably be interested in a lot of different Regional mythologies. And both of their differing strategies would result in different situations. Steven's slow and steady approach can be either a massive detriment, or save himself from getting into a lot of trouble. Same thing with Zinnia. Saves herself a lot of time, but probably gets herself into a lot of trouble.

I'm pretty sure something like a wand might explode if it was just snapped in half, or at least have something of a negative effect that you wouldn't want to stand around in. The way I see it, there are several different universes: one where pokermans and humans coexist (the "mainline" games), one where only Pokemon exist and humans were wiped out by some calamity; some may still exist somewhere but are in hiding because 30 something humans with guns vs. a monster house of some of the Pokemon encounterable in the wild=death, a universe in which humanity developed as it did in our timeline but no Japs ever sniffed paint and declared Pokemon a thing, and finally our universe. Maybe that's just my sperg-tier headcannon though.

I can assure you many experienced enlisted members are at least as annoyed by the change as you are, but for what its worth the new system still allows individuals to distinguish each other by occupational specialties and there is still a strong sense of camaraderie within individual job communities. So yes, you may have to have a character refer to themselves as a medical technician instead of a corpsman or a reactor operator instead of a EMN/ETN/whatever if you're determined to have an entirely accurate modern portrayal of the force, but I really don't think this would require much effort to work around in a story.

imagining pokemon trainers on a ship/sub is silly for various reasons though and I am eager to see how you portray them doing some sort of useful function without causing any sort of cataclysmic disaster

I tend to assume bullets are the equivalent of Steel type attacks, thus all Pokemon are vulnerable to some extent (yes, even Ghost types). That being said, most experienced Pokemon are tough enough to tank a few low caliber bullets and some extraordinarily well trained pokemon can hone their reaction times to the point they can straight up dodge or deflect shots.

Mimiga, I've been out of the thread for a while, but have you been actually incorporating suggestions people have made on your Gdocs? I see a lot of really awkward word choices and straight-up incorrect figures of speech everywhere and it's seriously confusing to read through at times. You could seriously do with a beta reader or two, my dude.

Go for it dude. I think Pokémon: Wasteland Version needs to be written. Fallout makes everything cool.

At least the type advantages/disadvantages of your version of Nuclear type make sense.

Are you kidding? I have people fucking ravage my chapters, there shouldn't be as many issues left as you claim there is. Are you sure you're not reading earlier version?

>tfw still in the process of rewriting a ravaged scene

I'm reading what's up on AO3. It's not bad, don't get me wrong - I'm enjoying the read. I just find myself stumbling over some sentences a lot more in TMoM than I was in Destiny Tower Journal or Ears.

I do have beta readers. If you are finding all these problems, why don't you be one next chapter that comes out?

Well, that's good to hear. Makes me feel better about spending way too long debating with myself over how to design it.

I'd be right happy to, actually. I helped with a couple chapters of Ears, so it should be no problem now that I'm back in the thread. I didn't mean to come off abrasive-like, so I apologize if I did. I'll be on the lookout to lend a hand whenever the next chapter's ready for editing.

I don't actually know what makes them so difficult, I can cruise through my own stuff just find and not have a problem. Maybe I'm just fucked up subconsciously with my reading voice.
>>

Your own voice is easier to digest because you already have meaning in your head so seeing the text for what it is becomes more difficult. Whenever I reread old work I find sentences here and there that are structured in a way that makes little sense.

100% this
Beta-readers are necessary even if you have total confidence in your skill simply because something that makes total sense to you might not make sense (or seem like something else) to others

Some people recommend editing sentence-by-sentence backwards, or even spellchecking word-by-word backwards, because it scrambles that order in your head.
