>Can I post NSFW fics?
Absolutely! There are no rules against NSFW text links.

>How should I post my fics?
Please, for the convenience of everyone involved, link to a host like Fanfiction.net, Pastebin or Google Docs rather than dumping your fics in text posts. This not only keeps the thread tidy (and keeps you from getting an infraction for spam), but it also provides a more permanent place to store your work.

>Can I add a fic I wrote to the catalog?
Sure! Check the catalog for the submission link. In there, you can find a link to a Google Form - fill out all the necessary information and it will be submitted for review automatically. Technology is incredible!

We're also looking to collect ideas for fanfics as a resource for stumped writers. Feel free to throw an idea out there; someone may choose to use it themselves!

Topic of the Thread: Do you remember the first fic you ever read/written?
>>
>>29118702
ToTT: Yes, it was a lime based in the MMBN universe. I was 13. My mother found it; she wasn't pleased.

I don't know what the first fic I read was, but I read an awful lot of lemons at first and that stilted my writing pretty terribly. But the old "middle school fanfiction" trope isn't just made up so, you know, you live and learn.

13 years went by so fucking fast. I'll be over thirty before I know it.

Aw. Yus.

TotT: Heck no. I have no idea what the first I read was, since I don't read it often and the first was probably a long time ago. Doesn't help some properties I love have really vague borders between fanfic and canon, to the point many official licensed stories could be called 'fanfic' (including all its most famous entries)

Also I've only ever wrote fanfic for 4chan and BStF is probably going to be the first multichapter work I complete, so there's that.

Question:
I plan on making a typical first person adventure story, but how would do you define the pronouns for the pokemon? Do you call them by the he or she, or do you just continuously call them it?

And then battle scenes. Any advice? Links to good battle fics?
I wanna make a good story

How 'magical' do you think some pokemon are?

I'm in a semi-freeform RP and amongst the cast is a small debate.

Some feel psychic-types, namely delphoxes (and theoretically any pokemon) are capable of legit magic.

Another feels that actual magic is only in the realm of ghost and fairy types.

A third is says ">implying magic, psionics, and science are separate disciplines"
>>
>>29122227
In any non-bullshit setting, "magic" follows some sort of internal logic and thus can, at least at the author level, be explained in a scientific/fantasy-scientific way. Thus, whether any Pokémon is capable of using "actual magic" depends on what that actually means, how it works, how anyone could be able to use it and how it is different from regular Pokémon powers.

Deus ex machinas and the excuses for enabling them (e.g. vaguely defined "magic") should be weeded out, freeform or not. Your group should figure out how the world you're working with functions.

I tend to treat all pokemon as being roughly equal unless they specifically have a special ability due to species. They can all already use "magic", why should some get extra?

/tg/ here, about to drop some stuff on you.

First off,
>DEPENDS ON THE SETTING
It's a meme, but it matters what you consider magic.

Basically all Pokémon would be some sort of caster, at home in DnD 4e and 5e with little change. Delphox and Braixen already fit into the Sorceror class, since they can cast their spells without needing a book. Fighting and even Normal Types would have access to Ki, Dark and Ghost types are connected to the Shado fell, and a few 'Mons are literally the Primal and Divine power sources.

However, I don't think we have a proper Wizard Pokémon, who casts from a spell book. Pokémon known for their intelligence would have an advantage in reaching that class, such as Porygon and Alakazam, and any other Pokémon who you could imagine being the one who teaches others moves from HM's and TM's. Even the HM's and the like could be changed into Naruto style scrolls that they can read.

Oh, and one more thing.

Pokémon you would consider to be more Bard like, such as Popplio here, would also wind up dangerously close to Wizards. Many can already Read Magic and are often educated/learned enough that they can give a Wizard pause.

TOTT: I can't remember the first fanfic I ever read; I don't read too many of them in the first place.
But in terms of writing: if we're talking about Pokémon, then I do remember my first, considering I only started writing Pokémon fanfics a month or two ago. I very rarely wrote any fanfiction before that--only two stories come to mind, in fact--but I believe the first I ever wrote may have been a Bionicle one from around 10 years ago. I was only like 10 at the time and thus it sucked, but I like to think I've improved since then. Hopefully.

Overly long response incoming, here we go

That was pretty nice overall, and enjoyable to read. I liked how all the Fennekin came up with unique plans, and it all panned out logically. The ending was quite cute as well.

Though I do have some nitpicks and things like that. First: some typos here and there, but nothing too major.
>The fields coinciding Route 7
Should be "The fields coinciding at/in Route 7" (I think)
>it were distracted
it was distracted
>"Why wouldn't it?" said the forth
said the fourth
>Not to the know of her superiors
to the knowledge
>more conflicted than she's been in years
she had been (to match the past tense of the rest of the story)

And a comma splice here, unless I'm mistaken:
>The barrier between them was literal, just outside the porcelain wall of the tub pouted the second Fennekin before their caretaker knelt down to address the pouting.

Also, it seems like you start off referring to each Fennekin as "it" but then shift to using the singular "they" for the rest of the story, so that should be fixed.

One last thing: when they were each coming up with their plans, the tense seemed to change a lot. Now, I'm not perfectly well-versed in grammar rules, so perhaps it actually was proper, but it seemed to me like it improperly jumped between the usual past tense and the future tense a lot. For example:
>The second and third Fennekin tried hard to come up with their own plans, but would end up sneaking behind a bush in discussion of how difficult it was before accidentally managing to form a plot together. It was from their combined efforts that they figured out...
The story went from past to future to past again, with "tried", then "would end up sneaking", then "figured out". It stood out to me as not looking right, but again, maybe it actually is proper and I just misread it. If so, disregard this message.

Besides those things, it was a good story. And as a side note, good luck weathering that storm.

As a Pokemon Professor I can assure you that all Pokemon types, including Ghosts and Psychics, have abilities which can be entirely explained through modern science while "magic" remains the realm of the ignorant and uninformed. Many water types, for instance, were once thought to "summon" their namesake projectiles seemingly out of thin air, but scientists now know that they naturally use an application of Pascal's Law from a contractible internal water reservoir through a series of tightly bound pressurized fluid tubes in order to expel water at enormous speeds. Psychic types on the other hand are a little more complicated and would likely require a degree in metaphysical biology to understand fully, but I can give a brief explanation if you'd like.

>Topic of the Thread: Do you remember the first fic you ever read

I do, actually. It was a fic called "The Curse of Missingno" on a fucking Google Groups board back in like 2002.

I don't really remember too much about its plot except that it directly adapted some of the glitches Missingno could cause in Red and Blue, particularly Pikachu getting infected by fighting it and slowly beginning to turn into a Missingno.
>>
>>29141226
But that's not something Missingno could do. I want to say you may have been thinking of this, but I doubt it'd been discovered back then:
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/ZZAZZ_glitch

>During and after the battle, the player can see that every Pokémon in their party except each third one has been changed to a level 153 Bulbasaur whose first, second, and fourth moves are all Explosion; the player's name except for every third letter has also been overwritten with capital Z's (hence the name of the glitch). All of these correspond to index number 0x99.

Now there's a glitch I'd read a fic about.
>>
>>29142312
>Now there's a glitch I'd read a fic about.
Idea bin time?
>>
>>29142312
No, it was definitely Missingno. I think it may have been referencing this:

>Encountering MissingNo. has been known to interfere with the save game data in various ways, such as adversely affecting the Hall of Fame data. The Hall of Fame is corrupted because of its proximity to a buffer used to store decompressed sprite data, which is too small to properly hold MissingNo.'s garbage sprite data.

ZZAZZ definitely has fic potential though.,

Also, was Part One decent? At this point I'm just winding this thing up for the main story to begin while trying to set the scene and build some of the characters a bit.
>>
>>29143208
>Also, was Part One decent?
it definitely felt like Part One of a chapter. Honestly putting out the whole chapter at once would have been a better course IMO. And I say this as someone who's merged chapters of their story multiple times now. As soon as it felt like it was getting somewhere, it was over.

The setting is pokemon.

>>29118702
he's another question: how do you settle one which version of certain settings to use?

Especially between original RSE and ORAS different Hoenns.

In my group we opted to split the difference, namely like Mauville is MOSTLY contained in a giant Arcology type building, but there's still plenty of buildings outside of it.

Similarly, the Sea Mauville and Abandoned ship both exist, though the Abandoned ship is crashed into the Sea Mauville.

So far I've been using the most up to date version of each region, with modifications I make myself based largely in headcanon and what not. Technically speaking, everything I've written so far happens a couple of years after X/Y, which is why Emma gets vaguely mentioned and so does the hex maniac that sells you milk, but I have something else planned for her.
>>
>>29143371
If I remember correctly, the Delta Episode heavily supported the multiverse theory, implying that RSE and ORAS Hoenn may just be alternate universes instead of one being a retcon of the other. And that could well extend into other regions too, meaning that there is potential to make any version of any setting usable as canon. So in the Hoenn example, I think it's equally valid to choose to write a story set in either the RSE or ORAS canon, or do what you and your group did and take a third option: reject their reality and substitute your own.
>>
>>29119201
I've had my protag call them it if they don't know their gender, and sometimes even after they've learned the gender if the poke belongs to a stranger (forgetfulness is also human nature). Problem comes when she starts talking about her own Pokemon, a lot of them are gender neutral, but continually using "it", while accurate is awkward, impersonal, and hard to keep track of. No satisfactory solution, I think.
>>
>>29118702
>First fic
I got into the Pokemon fanfic scene sort of late compared to my general Pokemon fandom.
If I remember correctly, it was about Sabrina operating a brothel inside a skyscraper in Saffron, basking in her rooftop penthouse and using her psychic powers to enjoy all the hanky panky going on down below.
>>
>>29144065
>but continually using "it", while accurate is awkward, impersonal
I think this is one case where a problem lies on the "subtle but important difference between character and reader" where it's overall better to come down on the character side.

A lot of times it might be more effective to 'translate' some subtle difference for the reader. Here, in the character's mind they not going to see 'it' as impersonal, because unlike reality they're every day confronted with living genderless things. They would be accustomed to using the word this way. But for the reader it might come off as jarring, because they haven't had that environment.

If the inaccuracy bothers you, don't do that translation step. Write your dialogue as your characters would actually speak. Personally, I have my characters use 'it' for genderless pokemon.

For example, do you come home to see the kitchen in a mess, with dismembered Quagsires, Rattatas, and Frogadiers strewn about?

Does your Delphox feel old when she sneaks out to punish evildoers and sees all the Vulpixes and Braixen?

And I think I should mention that the recap >>29119098 isn't completely accurate: the story's not exactly an "adoption" story, as the Combee's not rescued or adopted or anything, she's just caught in the wild.

Okay it's a long story. This teacher was a fucking monster and told me that he hated me and I'm here thinking 'well fuck this was a shitton of money wasted', and at the end of the semester, he decided to give us a '''break''' with an easy paper. All we had to do was right a formal essay about the meaning of a song, and he assigned them. And of fucking course I got Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash. My argument cited his biography and autobio as to the meaning of the song

and he still told me I was wrong. I said it was about temptation, and he was just like "Nope. Wrong. You get a 60 on it" (thank god I followed the basic requirements). And that's how I nearly failed my fucking prereq english class in university

So, cge has his personal canon with the speech TM, but does anyone have any headcanon about pokémon learning human speech normally? I'm tempted to touch upon it in what I'm writing, but I don't know if it's considered the height of autism or something. Realistically, I'd say a pokémon's ability to learn spoken language is up to physiology or reality-warping powers (like aura or telekinesis).

I think it would be ___cute___ for a poké to want to speak hooman talk with its trainer
>>
>>29166883
An adult Human is turned into a Pokémon and winds up in a PMD setting. Spends the time before the big quest appearing helping around town.
>>
>>29167155
Just go the Meowth route, since it's canon thanks to Yellow version. All it takes is a METRIC TON of effort. They start off being able to move some words of their name around, and work their way up from there.

Here, a jokey result would be Axew saying "Ask You" whenever something confuses it. With connotation, and story progression, they work from there. Eventually, it becomes a mini-Matlock. Jumping on to the table, saying "ASK YOU" as authoritatively as it can, and arranging all the evidence so that culprit has to confess.
>>
>>29167155
I've made all Psychic and Ghost types innately capable of speech to varying degrees. Xatu and Gardevoir speak eloquently, while Metagross and Gastly have more broken speech for example. I'm still figuring out all the specifics for the rest and coming up with exceptions in other types. It's tied mostly to intelligence.
>>
>>29167155
I personally feel like it's not possible for the vast majority of Pokemon to speak the human language, due to biological differences compared to humans. Their tongues, lips, vocal chords, etc. (assuming they have any of those) may not be set up to speak it properly. I believe psychic powers like telepathy would be required to communicate, though such powers need not be limited to Psychic-types. Pokemon like Lucario and Zoroark are occasionally shown to use that sort of telepathy in the anime and games alike. In addition, certain Chatot, Doduo, and Murkrow can speak vocally in the games, implying they're like parrots and are able to mimic sounds. That might extend to other birdlike Pokemon as well, but perhaps not all of them.

And of course, there is the famous example of Team Rocket's Meowth, who learned to speak Humanese (or whatever the language is called) through sheer determination. One might imagine he had a random mutation in his vocal chords or something that enabled him to emulate a human voice unlike other Meowth, or perhaps he was just so determined that he overcame his own biological limitations. Alternatively, it's just creative license without any in-universe justification.
>>
>>29167155
World-breaking implications aside, something people tend to forget when it comes to the subject of Pokémon learning to communicate with humans is that it doesn't have to be the ol' "learning to speak human" approach. If Pokémon are smart enough to learn a human language, they could probably learn a sign language compatible with their anatomy, or use text-to-speech devices.
>>
>>29167426
According to the anime, it took up his move slot to learn how to talk. It's the reason he doesn't have Pay Day.

Fun note, he is a very good ramen Chef.

I'm sticking with the more realistic sounds pokémon make in the games and Generations, as opposed to the silly kid-friendly language they have in the anime. It's cute, but it's just so unrealistic, even for pokèmon.

My story (stories) have it a couple different ways. Most pokemon can't vocally replicate human speech because different mouth structures. Some birds can because their unique tracheal structures like IRL, but there's no birdmons featured in my story.

Latias can because she basically rips the words from Michael's mind and constructs sentences in his head, making them sound like they're spoken in her own 'voice'.

Flygon can approximate human speech through wing vibrations, but can't make certain sounds, and he's not super motivated to work around his limitations so he speaks super laconic. He also is trained in using colored lights, flags, and flares as communication methods while he works with his trainer on their engineer stuff.

In Latias' case at least it's a major part of her character. She values her ability to speak highly. She gets jealous of the Flygon. The physiological speech limitations between the two become a minor plot point later.

>>29167673
>Aren't there a few more robot/computer like Pokemon?
Metagross is said to be basically a living supercomputer.

>>29167891
I had the Ninetales at one point 'speak' anime-style with their names in the earlier drafts of the first couple BStF chapters, but when I rewrote them I eliminated it, because it didn't make a lot of sense and I wasn't using it anywhere near consistently anyway.

And then my request for some maractus lovin'.
If you need an idea, perhaps the trainer could end up asking his Maractus for dancing advice to get a lady (or get into a club). However, as they practice he could end up making his own dance that unintentionally garner's the pokemon's love interest (mating dances and whatnot). Anything goes after that, until the two share a duet or something before she makes her move on him...and then vice versa...which then turns into a prickly but lewd situation. Emphasize on that cactass if you can.
>>
>>29167155

If there is anything I have learned critiquing fanfics it is that lore should follow the needs of the plot and not vice versa.

Part of what makes Pokemon training an interesting subject is that stories about it revolve around people/Pokemon of different species learning to overcome their instinctual and social differences and learn to cooperate. It takes effort to write a story where a trainer and their team figure out ways to help each other and communicate to some extent when they may not even have the same concept of language let alone the ability to speak to each other, but that's what makes it compelling. Using some magical gadget to let all Pokemon speak English cheapens the whole experience immensely and has the danger of forcing human personalities onto exotic Pokemon even when it doesn't make sense.

Personally I'm willing to accept that most Pokemon with Psychic powers can communicate thoughts and ideas mentally with humans to a limited degree, that Legendaries can pretty much speak telepathically whenever they wish (though not always in the clear well-formatted English trainers are used to), and that particularly intelligent trained Pokemon (say, the top 1%) can learn some form of sign language or writing which gets basic ideas across. It can't be done though as a shortcut for character development but more as a long term objective for Trainers and their Pokemon to work on.

Latias and Flygon meet up? So those two stories of yours are connected, then? That's interesting, if that's the case. I like it when multiple stories have some sort of overlap or reference each other, since it creates a sense of an interconnected world.

Also don't worry about people seemingly not reading your story they probably are its just that they either dont have anything to say about it or are just too busy. Besides the fanfic thread is kind of slow anyway so dont expect anything directly after releasing a story.

Thank you for reading it, and thanks for the kind words. That all means a lot to me.

Your mention of the personalities of Vincent's Pokemon got me thinking that I really haven't given very much thought to that subject, which is probably a bad thing, come to think of it. Your ideas aren't exactly what I was going for, but they don't sound too bad nonetheless.

Really, the only consideration I'd given to them was to make Weavile the sort of gruff yet kind character, but I never thought much about Scyther. I really should do more with him, other than make him just a random Pokemon for Vincent to use. In fact, I like your idea of him being somewhat oblivious or goofy, and that might be how I decide to make him. I might even go back into chapter 2 and edit it to try and make that personality more apparent, before anyone else reads it.

Can I just complain for a moment?

I'm really sick and tired of grimderp fics, and to another extent, Gen 1.

I understand, I get it, we all have our grimderp moments and think we have the best idea ever, but it gets tiresome to see so many of ff and other places.

The most annoying is when people complain about Pokémon not being dark enough for them while Colosseum exists and the makers of Danganronpa and 999 present Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.

As for the Gen1 pandering, I actually don't mind when Nintendo and TPCI does it. It's their property, it started it, it's special. It's when people still keep making jokes, comics, and macros as if they have never been done before. We talked about this stuff when I was in a sandbox in elementary school, I'm worrying about the economic viability of my state and making sure I am properly investing for retirement now. Show me some Gen 2 stuff, what happened there? Gen 3 must have made some mistakes, but did they improve the series? Use those Pokémon, make some jokes about those. I'll actually find those interesting!
>>
>>29186518
I mean, do they realize there is usually a graveyard in every region? I mean, it's kind of a staple to find ghost pokes there. There's dark stuff if you look, but this is a franchise for children. CHILDREN. people need to chill about it not being edgy enough. It has plenty of edge for what it is
>>
>>29186356
I looked it up, and while 'Urf and the Pokémon world aren't exactly 1 to 1, there are reintroduced groups of white lions running around in Africa. If anyone bothers to ask, just say the MC lives close to a Safari Zone dealing with them.

Now that it has your scent, the mother will never accept it back.
>>
>>29186654
That's actually a good idea. I was just hoping that shinx is a dumb enough pokemon that people won't be shouting mary sue at me. I mean, if I gave her a shiny black charizard, thats kind of overdone at this point, don't you think?

Now to figure out how the hell to draw him.

WAKE UP
What a coincidence, I've gotten back into shiny hunting lately too. It's been over a week since I got anything, though. I'm starting to think I may have actually encountered one or two along the way but ran from them without noticing because I was so bored that I didn't pay attention.
>>
>>29187142

also: nearly ran from the haxorous. I would have kms if that had actually happened. I start to doubt myself too.
>>
>>29187189
I'm using the Friend Safari too. It worked well at first--I got a Dedenne and a Pupitar in three days--but it's been a over week since then. Still, I believe the Friend Safari is the best method.

Anything I don't like.

Being more serious, mostly stories that go "this is how the Pokemon world actually would work!" or "My story is based on the superior direction the original creator wanted!" I'm from /tg/, so I understand people wanting to put their spin on something, and I'll even support the entertaining threads, but it has been 20 years. Stop telling me how Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet, or whatever other crayola color you pulled out of the box should have been the TRUE PROTAGONIST.

I'm just being whiny tonight.
>>
>>29187289
it's tricky like that. It's all down to that RNG, I'm doing it constantly. while I study, while I work on my Thesis, while I'm playing fallout 4. I wish you the best of luck in hunting, it's all luck based.

and yeah, it is. I'm too lazy to get the shiny charm so this is going to be how I get them, I guess.
>>
>>29187316
I understand what you're saying about protagonists, but I guess I'm not understanding "how the world would actually work." You mean like a complete retooling of infrastructure and stuff, or just changes to mechanics of capture or what?
>>
>>29187430
not him, but it sounds like "how the world would actually work." is those moments where a character goes 'this is real life, not a videogame/comicbook/other media franchise' after something threatening is about to happen or has happened.
>>
>Topic of the Thread: Do you remember the first fic you ever read.

Yes, I think it was called "Pokemon Master" or something like that, and it was super edgy, and super super long. It was post-apocalyptic junk, Ash and his shadow pikachu were the main characters, in particular I recall a scene where a trainer has an enemy trainer in his onyx's mouth, and the onyx ate him, there was also this thing about Gary being a clone of Ash and Mewtwo. It was certainly something.

Actually, I did find the TV tropes page for it http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FanFic/PokemonMaster
>>
>>29187430
Mostly when they go into blood and gore during the fights. When Joey's Ratata explodes all over his face and the Pokemon have to fight to the death like in a rooster battle, I tend to tune out.

I'm okay with tales of people having to deal/work with Pokemon, that stuff is fine.

>>29187567
I accept those. People have expectations of how things work, and then they don't exactly work that way. It's when you go Urobutcher on them after and limbs start flying that gets to me.
>>
>>29187333
Good luck to you too. In the end, it's really just a war of attrition, a matter of not dying of boredom until you find a shiny.
Then you have permission to die.
>>
>>29187675
Ah, yeah, I see. I don't mind it when it's applicable (i.e. during actual fights to the death, hunts, etc.) but seeing it crop up during what are supposedly friendly/competitive trainer battles is a bit of a headscratcher. Thanks for elaborating.
>>
>>29187828
thanks. i've been thinking about writing something involving maxie , because he is so under appreciated, but his character is not easy to nail. and I don't want to screw it up.

>when the story opens with an exhaustive description of the main character
I'm so terrified of doing this that I've gone too far in the other direction. I think there's next to no information about what any of my characters look like despite me having a document with their descriptions.

I never know when to bring it up outside of the mention I gave of Ignace's hair color when he put a wig on. I "know" how to strike a happy medium but I never do.
>>
>>29189077
I'm a decent artist so I usually just include a photo with mine. I will give little things here or there, but overall, I am terrified of starting out with some big monologue about how they look. I also never start with a dream, or anything epic. I feel like a fug whenever I write a story, so I start from where I would be if I were two pages in. I write introductions last.

also I'm terrified of the 'outcast loser who is perfect' trope so usually in my fics my characters are called out on their shit and they acknowledge they prob did something wrong

Fortunately fags tend to do this early, so I don't loose too much time.
>>
>>29189236

I mean the idea is that while it's third person, we're still seeing the world from another character's perspective and first person is cancer.

I'm okay when other people do this, but I feel like such a shit when I write a 'chapter' that's only around 2100 words or less.
>>
>First paragraphs of story is a play-by-play of MC's morning routine and a description of the character's appearance.
>>
>>29189077
I tend to be pretty concise in my physical descriptions too. Case in point, the description of my current story's main character is
>He removed the hood of his big yellow raincoat as he walked along, revealing his long blond hair
and that's it. I have no clue if that's too little but I can't figure out how to naturally explain the rest of his appearance.

>>29189152
>I usually just include a photo with mine
Maybe I'm alone in thinking this, but I believe that while including a picture is nice, it's important that you don't rely on it to do your explanation for you. An image can help readers understand what you're saying, but I feel like it shouldn't replace textual description.
>>
>>29189361
>>First paragraphs of story is a play-by-play of MC's morning routine
The character's piss-shower-toothbrush order is vital to understanding who he really is.

Seeing people mention Mary Sues makes me think it's time to make a question, it's something that's bothering me a lot

I really want to give my character a Type : Null that later down the road evolves into Silvally, but I'm afraid of people saying that she's a Mary Sue because of that. Silvally might not be a legendary, but it's basically a mini Arceus.

What should I do?
>>
>>29197562
Stop worrying so much about what people think. It's just your ingame team; who cares if Silvally ends up being "mary sue"-ish.

I mean, you could argue the same thing about starters. For when you get them in-game they have stellar stats, usually pretty great movepools and are unique to a playthrough, unless you trade online.

Use who you want, Anon.

>Some musing thoughts before I go back to work.
It's no surprise being "productive" can mean a lot more than simply typing out a lot of words. The editing process itself is a critical part of making a fiction worthwhile to a reader. If you can somehow defy the laws of nature and pump out thousands of words a night, that's wonderful - seriously you deserve kudos. Just keep in mind that neglecting to pay attention during the editing process will not do your craft any favors and you might leave in some ugly mistakes. I understand there can be an irresistible, almost impulsive urge to release a new chapter/story "hot-off-the-press" but patience is truly a virtue. So, please, take that little extra time to reread what you write. Shout out to anyone who reads and helps proof for writers. And if you DIY, that's cool too.

peace out /vpwt/

Read each sentence, slowly, deliberately. Out loud if you want to. Your eyes will always want to go on ahead, chasing frantically for that period at the end of a sentence. So your job is to slow that process down a bit in order to capture mistakes that would otherwise be hiding in plain sight. Don't worry, you'll get better with practice.
>>
>>29205965
A little promotion would take care of that bit of old news. But a PM system would require them to create some sort of mechanism by which people could upload text and a way for somebody else to read it.

>>29206042
Foremost, categorize your errors to learn what is your major malfunction. Be vigilant as you write to catch yourself making that mistake until you learn not to make it. Then, eliminate your next bad habit. Soon, your proof-reading effort will be more about improving the subjective quality of your story than chasing down sloppiness.
>>
>>29206168
>>29206835
I dunno, maybe I'm just really bad at proofing in general still, cuz that's what I've been doing for the last two years. It might not help that the rough draft is MUCH rougher than what it should be, and the second is simply me revising paragraphs in different and more purple ways as to build depth and better structure, thus making it harder for myself to actually keep track of what then fuck is going on. What fucks me mostly is just the way my head perceives what is correct structure, which I am often completely oblivious about.

I think I have more trouble with shitty design choices and mood more than anything, which don't really have anything to do with traditional error.
>>
>>29206955
>the rough draft is MUCH rougher than what it should be

You have identified your major malfunction: You whip off text carelessly, then you fuss over it.

Slow down a little and hold yourself to one content revision (technical as needed) on any particular line until you've revised the whole thing and taken a look at what you really have.

It ended up making my plot point even more powerful she developed schizophrenia after a childhood trauma, the Banette-part of her Ralts actually amps it up to eleven and causes more harm than good, draining her energy while she thinks her objectives are real

this would trigger me if they wouldn't want to be the only ones controlling pokémon while the other go dead. Also b/c they're not mentioned up to ch.30
>much potential for unimpressive
Fine, you got me. Gym leader's daughter is a bias, and the only thing it matters for is giving the starter anyway

TotT: First fic ever read was a parody of a well-known HP fanfic. My 12-yo self thought it was a reasonable idea to write something on that line.
Pokémon-wise, it only happened when I already had sense of criticism, and as such were decent things.

Also, is there any HUEBR-fag here, or am I lurking alone?

How is a beta-reader going to send an application, should they wish the position?
>>
>>29210674
Why don't you create a FFN account? The more, the merrier.

Feedback is appreciated

I have one. Mimiga doesn't.
>>
>>29210674
But google docs IS beta reading, or at least close enough for me, considering it's the step where people read it and fix it. I only ever use my A03 email for anything, and I don't check any of them at all.
>>
>>29210871
Sounds like you have plenty of beta-readers then! Just not any -dedicated- ones

I'll make sure to stop in next time you throw one up.
>>
>>29210901
Yeah, I didn't mean that I needed beta readers as in I had none, I meant that my editing is so shitty that I need beta readers after spending a day or two dedicated to hurting my eyes concentrating way too hard on black text with white background.
>>
>>29209486
I had time to speed through Chapter 1 and skim over 2.

The copy has a few errors (missing line break, a wrong conjugation, etc.) but reparable defects aside it's fine. Narrator is a little heavy on presumed and inconsequential details (if somebody reaches for a tablet computer, I think it's safely unsaid that he picks it up), immediate reiterations give a sense of lacking confidence in the portrayal, and some paragraphs run rich on passive telling.

The work of the writing seems to be nearly A-grade, but there's no mystery and no hook in the introductory material. The text tells me what they are going to do and then they do it. It doesn't intrigue me. I think part of the problem is that you're making Combee the POV character, yet all of the activity is driven by Free, so he and Narrator are taking turns delivering soliloquy. Were Free the POV character, a lot of the wordiness could fall away and the reader would understand Combee's experience the way Free does.

I found your problem.
You're accidentally using a writing-on-paper virtual reality simulator instead of a word processor. Use a word processor with either light-on-blue or, even better, mid-tones and you'll forget about eye strain.
>>
>>29211963
I'm not the person you're talking to, but I have astigmatism and white text on dark backgrounds strain my eyes excessively. It makes me have real life ghosting, it's terrible and I hate it.
>>
>>29211963
Hm, I've never seen anyone use blue. Mine is white on black, and it seriously helps with strain. I don't even feel it, nowadays.

now, if there were a CT solution, we'd be getting somewhere..

Next TotT: Word processor preferences?

I'm using Notepad with a really shitty graphics card that has a broken driver, so yeah.

Before 16-color monitors, you had either green on black or amber on black.

Trainer x ninetails

It's likely F-trainer x F-pokemon
>>
>>29213521
I believe I've read one good one, and one that had so much potential to be good but turned out shit. I think m/m is only popular if it's between two pokémon, for furry reasons no doubt.
