Lillie is an artificially created UB, namely UB-01.
She was created by the Aether Foundation (Lusamine's corporation). She grew up in the laboratory and for over ten years wasn't allowed to leave it. They conducted numerous experiments on her.

One day Team Skull broke into the facilities to steal shit and as a byproduct Lillie managed to escape.

She's not really human though and despite having been taught how to read, speak and act like a normal human being, she doesn't really understand human emotions.
She decides that she wants to learn more about this world out there that she has never before seen and enrolls in a school class where she meets Ash, Mallow, Lana and the others.

They become friends and at the end of the SM anime, when the big battle showdown happens on Aether Foundation's artificial island their main reactor goes haywire and is threatening to explode. If it does, it will destroy all of Alola with it.

Lillie, having lived in these facilities, knows how to stop this from happening. She thanks Ash and the others for teaching her the meaning of friendship and the joy of life before telling them to flee then running into the core reactor room, locking herself in. She changes back into her UB-01 form and encompasses the nuclear core, absorbing the massive explosion seconds later.

In doing so she saves Alola and her friends, but dies.
