The thing is Serena's crush made up so much of her character and motive that it being dropped essentially ruins her character arc.

May and Dawn didn't have this problem because their characters weren't so attached to Ash that you felt they couldn't strike out on their own. They had satisfying conclusions in their quests and it made sense for them to go off on their own.

Serena just feels more like a sad ending, because part of her goal was Ash. The writers baiting with shipping made it all worse for fans.

I just don't get why they'd introduce a canon shipping 17 years into a series, do a whole childhood backstory and promote it heavily for 3 years...for no reason.

Serena's crush didn't even have to exist. But since it did, the writers just set themselves up for a fall because they couldn't follow through with it. Likewise it was a selling point to believing Ash would get a proper ending, and now that's gone too.

XY's conclusion actually bothers me more than any other saga now for this reason.

Amour was going NOWHERE, and everyone with half a brain knew that Ash was NOT, I repeat, NOT, winning the league. We aren't mad at WHAT has happened; we are mad at HOW it is happening.

If Serena's arc was concluded fine, I don't think a single one of us would mind her leaving. Would we be sad? Of course, but as long as she got good closure, we'd understand, accept it, and move on.

We don't know what the Serena leaving episode is going to be like, but from the information we have gathered, Serena will have a battle with Ash, lose, wink, then leave. No blushing, no flashbacks, NOTHING. That is GARBAGE and pukes on all the development the two had together.
