I don't think that even 8gag can support the amount of users and bandwidth that 4chan chews through.

A lot of the money probably goes into the bandwidth and the fact that 4chan's cdns automatically rehost every image even images from other sites locally whereas sites like reddit can cheat by offloading all the big hosting costs to imgur for example.

It's the fact that the characters are taken from their universes and lose all of their personality to fit into this one type of generic character in a generic fanfiction-esque plot.

Just some of the stuff I read with very memorable characterisation. Like 99% isn't gay as writers are pretty conservative people until fairly recent times (which was what that Hugo drama was all about.)

There are a few interesting fanfictions that I've come across for Pokemon like Shadowed Visage by CherryJacks which toys with concepts such as happiness and the nature of reality but most can be a little simplistic. To produce non generic characters authors would probably have to do a lot more research and read a lot more widely (David Hume makes a very good philosophical argument that human ideas are not the product of innate creativity but rather everything is copied or a combination of copied ideas: http://www.iep.utm.edu/hume/#H2 which I think helps to legitimise fanfic).

The biggest failings of fanfics are sticking far too closely to the game plot, only dealing with things that occur within the game plot (it's really important that the characters are tested by conflict) or using romance as a crutch for actual plot.

Doctor Who had a few book length fanfics which were actually rejected novels http://doctorwho.org.nz/archive/campaign/ but no other fandom I've come across has equivalent quality or dedication in the writers.
