Ash is much goofier and sillier than he was in XY, but he is still pretty competent. In episode 1 he surprises everyone when Pikachu soloes a bunch of Skull Gang grunts
Skull Gang is treated much less seriously than Galactic, Plasma or Flare. They're basically just a gang, their primary motivation is profit and creating chaos.
Mallow is probably the closest you can call a companion in the show, followed by Lillie.
The school is actually an school for gifted people, their teachers are Professor Kukui himself and Samson Oak.
Trials are a thing. Lana, Sophocles, Mallow and Kiawe are still Trial Captains. Besides the episodic stuff in the school, Satoshi travels with each of them to each island.
Lillie is a genius human Pokedex, but she doesn't like Pokemon battles.
Aether appears in the anime so I guess UBs will eventually come.
