I can't tell whether he was responsible for Ash losing the league or if he intended otherwise. He wrote the Ash Greninja episodes so I suspect he wanted to actually do something with it instead of the immense disappointment it ended up being (both in the league and in the TF arc).

Also, he wrote the Ash/Paul rivalry, so yeah, he knows his stuff when he wants. Had Ash won over Alan and the Flare arc been better in some regards, I'd be singing his praises now.

Swellow was Ash's best AG pokemon after Sceptile. It's actually Ash's strongest bird with the best winrate. In the league, it took down four Pokemon from Katie and Tyson on its own. That's incredible.
