It only seems reasonable that after years of battling, a Pokémon might sustain a serious or irreparable injury. Just look at boxing. So no, if you write it properly and don't do some "this is Blayde my Bisharp OC he has an eyepatch because a serial killer stabbed him in the eye somehow" garbage, then I wouldn't call it autistic at all.

There's only one right answer to the TotT, and that is...

Whatever makes sense for the character, really.
Meaningful faults should make sense for the character. Slapping ones on randomly is bad form. Just give them what they should logically have.

There's a very fine balance that needs to be struck. It needs to be a part of their character, but it can't define their character.

Focus too little on it, and it IS tacked on.
Focus too much when the story doesn't call for it, and it takes away from the story. In addition that if you don't understand the disability well enough, you come off as a bit...McFarlanesque, for lack of a better term.

If you want an idea of how to do a disabled character well, look up Johnny Joestar. Everyone's favorite asshole.

The short of it is: the balance is entirely up to the role they fill in the story. Goods and bads to a character come up as I write (and sometimes in planning or in retrospective looks at the work as a whole) and overall I don't try to force them any one way other than making sure they don't become Mary-Sues.

Let's use Johannes as an example:

>Acts as the primary point of reference for understanding the world; is a researcher so his knowledge of pokemon behavior is considerable, while his knowledge of battle is small

He tints the lens we view the world in. What is a good characteristic that forms his core?
>Is devoted to Viola and trying his best to better bridge the human/pokemon communication gap

What is his primary weakness?
>Has become terribly disconnected from human society and the original intent of his own work and falls prey to lust

What does this develop into?
>Refocuses his efforts with Viola to make the relationship healthier, refocuses his efforts to align with his job, tries his best to make amends to Eric for his mistakes, promises to do good work in Sinnoh

But what doesn't get ironed out?

I think this is an okay balance, but he needs work.

...Okay, I'm not saying that it's impossible to make it work...but it is very very unlikely. A blind quadruple amputee does not seem a good idea unless you're going for a "Johnny got his gun" sort of thing. Perhaps dial it back?

As an aside, this is a good time to point out that it's best to not heap on too much tragedy, as it's very hard to see someone as a character if they appear as more of a tool to try and elicit sympathy. And Tragedy Cascade characters tend to be the latter. If you're going to have disabilities, try to not have more than one major one, unless you know damn well what you're doing.

Well, I'm really interested in writing a fanfic about Pokémon. Already thought of some characters and stuff...Do you guys have any advice with someone who is new to it? I'm a journalist, so writing wouldn't be a problem.

In my mind, I'm still re-working on my next pokefic. It's still stuck roughly where it was a couple months ago (I literally haven't gotten to write in comfy productive mode in over a month, beset by distractions), but something came to mind very recently that might be a fix for what's stalled it.

First, Book mark an online thesaurus and dictionary. You will thank me later.

Second, you can't write it like you would an essay. If you are a journalist, you know how to capture interest, yeah? You're going to need to capture interest without sounding biased or trying to convince us. Because the second you try to convince us, you snap us out of the story.

Three. Your first draft should be shitty. Write a chapter, page, or paragraph if you must. But get that shit down on the paper, and don't worry about if it doesn't sound good at the time. In the days of the computer, it's super easy to rewrite. Just throw DOWN the words in your mind, so you can fix them UP later.

And the best advice I can give you is to KEEP WRITING. Write ANYTHING you can. You don't have to show anyone a story you wrote if you don't want them to. It can be your secret. But if you ever have writers block, just open up that dirty little secret and write, write, write.

Still brainstorming the next chapter for Au Coup Par Coup. Wondering how long I want Only Viridian to run. Probably just three or four chapters really. But it might balloon in size.

Or you could do a short about a roserade and gardevoir competing to get their masters affection. Which could end with him loving both, just being oblivious or in sex if you can write that stuff.

Funny, I'd kind of expect psychics to hold up better than others who lost hearing just by nature of being able to "hear" thoughts to mitigate loss of information.

There's a story or plot point somewhere in a trainer dealing with the loss of privacy involved in playing auditory crutch for their deaf psychic.

The topic of pokemon injuries raises an interesting question in how evolution effects permanent injuries. Some pokemon gain extra limbs from evolving, so would it be reasonable for one to gain lost limbs from it?

Yeah, my logic is that psychics would have to put effort into using mind reading abilities, otherwise they would have to both hear thoughts and sounds at the same time, running into a big mess.

So if a certian Gardevior waifu mon lost sense of hearing, situational awareness would be a much more active thing, and she would slowly succumb to paranoia, constantly scanning and monitoring thoughts just to stay in touch with those around her.

Making a blind character is fine. So is making a character with a lost limb. But if you ask me, making a blind character who also lost all four limbs is definitely pushing it. Maybe you should just make him blind, or just make him lose one limb, but don't go all out or else it'll seem like overkill.

Basically, your characters should be just strong enough to plausibly get past their challenges, but just weak enough for each challenge to be a genuine fight to conquer.

In terms of good character traits and bad, it should be a mix where a character can plausibly land on either end of the karmic scale depending on how far they go down, or have already gone down the rabbit hole of their benign and less benign character traits.

Speaking of striking a balance, I finally closed out my current story arc in my fic. The chapter's a bit shorter than the past few ones have been, though I'm hoping the pacing still held up this time around.

Well, let me try to explain...I will create a region, like it was a country, not related to the games and the series. It will keep the gyms, but kinda different. The requirement will be higher and the conditions will be difficult. Plus, I'm trying to give a story between the characters during the journey, with real life struggles and some kind of fantasy too. The characters will have background history and development, in various areas.

Thing is, I'm planning to create a protagonist, whose father no one knows and his mother was once a skilled battler, who died three years prior to the start. He will have a younger brother and a younger sister to raise with some ridiculous job, and a girlfriend, that is already a trainer. He would dream to be like his mother, but the real life struggles would be problems. Then he will get a call from a Pokémon Professor, who was keeping his late mother's Pokémon, that was going to close his lab and then he would have pay more to keep them in care. The professor then says the only thing who could help him to keep the lab was if some trainer who started a journey with him as a tutor won the national Pokémon league. Then you'll start your journey and stuff, the story will be long and I am focusing on personalities and character development during the chapters

Something to keep in mind: If you're going with an adult newbie (and you still intend the story to be about the adventures of the journey), the world should probably be more hostile, so that the average trainer starting age is justifiably higher.
The source material claims that 11-year-olds can handle the journey. If that were true in your story, an adult protagonist would likely face little challenge from the journey itself and would also get his shit kicked in by kids several years younger than him.

Not necessarily, shininess is all probability so it's possible for them to happen anywhere. I guess it all comes down to your skill as a writer.

I see it as: the pokemon is shiny to indicate something is very peculiar about it and that altered coloration only drives it home _or_ the Trainer that finds the shiny does so only after a tremendous amount of work of actively attempting to find one.

The former requires sufficient justification, the latter is justified by bringing the reader along for an exercise in throwing dice that are loaded to the nth power. But this brings up the question: why are they looking for this shiny variant in the first place?

Like, someone could accidentally stumble upon a shiny in the wild and, having never seen another pokemon of that species, think that that color is normal for that species.
