But it isn't any different. Both require you to beat some gym or progress in some way to open a path you saw earlier. At least the dancing dudes were kind of silly and lapshaded that fact. HMs just meant you had to not only get a move, but teach it to a pokemon, AND beat a gym leader for no reason. Or getting the watering can for a Sudowoodo you could have easily walked around.

The autumn areas in Johto and Unova were both in corner areas out of the way. Unova has no permanent snow and Johto's is in a cave/the top of a mountain.

Jotho and Kanto sort of were limited by their hardware, but still managed to feel memorable with their locations. Sinnoh and Hoenn were perfect in regards of the region making sense.

Then Unova came along and it just felt like connected hallways (though they did try to hide it), but not quite as far as Kalos took it.

I'm not saying anything in particular is bad, but ALMOST nothing is stand out worthy. Even customization is pretty limited (for guys). They really didn't settle down and make a few really good things

I think x/y was more of a test run for the new 3D engine than anything, yes the region was a little bland and passive, but I really think sun and moon will give us what kalos did not - bar hoenn obviously because that was just a remake of an existing region.

Yeah, they were limited, but Johto's Gen 4 depiction definitely makes it very comparable to the regions of later generations. They added many aesthetic details like rain, snow, puddles in the overworld, unique towns, and the autumn stuff at Ecruteak.

Also, Kanto finally looks like the urban region it's supposed to be. It's still not particularly interesting IMO, but it looks good.

Both regions (And Hoenn) benefitted from the poorer hardware of the earlier days making the region coherent, and the improved hardware of later making them fully realised. Kalos and Unova suffered from having everything available to them, though Unova still turned out fine.

You know, of all the problems to have with a region, linearity should never be one of them. Johto shows what happens when you allow the player to choose their sequence. It ends badly.

i'm torn on hoenn. i fucking hate that the second half of the game is literally entirely water routes, but the first half is designed well.

I actually really like Mt. Coronet. It dominates the whole of central Sinnoh and exploring it really feels like actual exploration. I love how huge it is. The various areas that are associated with it (due to them feeling like part of a mountainous area) but are technically not a part of it (like Oreburgh Gate) also help the feeling of hugeness.

Well duh Gen 4 Johto is comparable to Gen 3 Johto.

What I'm saying is that Gen 4 Johto (and Kanto to a lesser extent) is more comparable to Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos due to being in 3D like the rest of them, having the later conventions like weather in the overworld or puddles on the ground, more ecosystems, updated aesthetics, etc.

What helped Johto was that it had unique locations to update in the first place. Like a well, Lake of Rage, or a farm.
