It's not about accomplishing goals. May and Dawn didn't become Top Coordinators in the end but I enjoyed their journeys.

Pokémon Contests were unpredictable, mainly the DP ones but still. With Ash we always know he is going to lose to at least one Gym Leader, have a rematch, and ultimately win. We didn't really know what to expect from Contests. Dawn lost twice without even advancing to the Battle Stage. It was fun to watch, it was exciting. With Ash is just so boring and predictable and it would be the same if he got replaced because his substitute would still go after Gym Badges.

I am so tired of the Gym format. I'm happy Alola doesn't have Gyms. Really hope these trials will spice things up for Ash;
